TFA flavourants that contain vomit odor in their mixture - Listing
submitted about 9 years ago by Wayne0

Edit: This is not a complete listing. The easiest way is to click on the CAS number for a chemical, and you'll see all flavors that contain the chemical.

Hey folks, so some people are sensitive to the 'vomit' odor/flavor (butyric acid) of some of the TFA flavourants.

I created and ran a quick script on all of their posted MSDS listings for Butyric acid, and it came back with these 15.

I imagine these might also include some of their 'Perfumers' line as well.

Hope the list helps someone

~~Black Cherry Flavor~~ Butyric acid <2-methyl->

Cheesecake Flavor

DX Butterscotch Flavor

DX Hazelnut Flavor

DX Red Velvet Flavor

Fudge Brownie Flavor

Hazelnut Flavor

~~Kiwi (Double) Flavor~~ Butyric acid <2-methyl->

~~Nectarine Flavor~~ Butyric acid <2-methyl->

Orange Mandarin Flavor

~~Peach Flavor~~ Butyric acid <2-methyl->

Pralines and Cream Flavor

Red Velvet Cake Flavor

Strawberries and Cream Flavor * Also Butyric acid <2-methyl->

Strawberry Flavor * Also Butyric acid <2-methyl->

Or you can click the CAS number for butyric acid and get the listing of all flavors that contain that CAS....

so, long story short, your list is rather innaccurate.

A. TPA lists some of their flavors as butyric acid and some as butanoic acid, but these are synonymous. Your list did not account for flavors which have "butanoic acid" listed, which was immediately obvious to me since TFA Sweet Cream did not appear on your list. An actual list of flavors with butyric acid can be found here

  • Bacon Flavor
  • Banana Cream Flavor
  • Butterscotch Flavor
  • Caramel Candy Flavor
  • Cheesecake Flavor
  • Coffee (Kona) Flavor
  • Dairy/Milk Flavor
  • Dulce de Leche Flavor
  • DX Banana Cream
  • DX Butterscotch Flavor
  • DX Caramel Original
  • DX Hazelnut Flavor
  • DX Red Velvet Flavor
  • DX Sweet Cream Flavor
  • Fudge Brownie Flavor
  • Gingerbread Cookie
  • Greek Yogurt Flavor
  • Green Apple Flavor
  • Hazelnut Flavor
  • Hazelnut Praline Flavor
  • Milk Chocolate Flavor
  • Mocha Flavor
  • Orange Mandarin Flavor
  • Papaya Flavor
  • Pizza Flavor
  • Pralines and Cream Flavor
  • Pumpkin Flavor
  • Red Velvet Cake Flavor
  • Red Velvet Flavor (no AP)
  • Strawberries and Cream Flavor
  • Strawberry Flavor
  • Sweet Cream Flavor
  • Tiramisu Flavor
  • Waffle Flavor
  • White Chocolate Flavor

B. You also listed some flavors that contain butyric acid <2-methyl> which is similar, but distinct. I cannot speak to whether those with a sensitivity to butyric acid would have issues with this chemical, but it is important to make the distinction.

Its cool you were trying to go and do the heavy lifting for others, but in the future, just use TFA's CAS numbers to find what you're looking for!

paging /u/abdada to confirm my chemistry..

Thanks. I wasn't aware of all these nuances. Like I said, a quick script that searched for 'butyric acid'. If I had known it was as easy as clicking on that CAS number, I wouldn't have even posted at all. Skiddlz mentioned it earlier, but I didn't have a chance to go figure it out.

The more we can all learn, the better. Much thanks.

I almost puked when I saw bacon flavor. Hmm, bacon, cake, butter, maple. Call it wake and vape. No, fuck that.

I've done a bacon/maple pecan flavor that was straight up a Mcgriddle. It was fairly decent and even sold a bunch of it.

I've actually had a bacon flavor from a local B&M, and it wasn't terrible. Tasted slightly burnt, but was definitely bacon.

Now, another B&M near me has a BBQ Sandwich flavor that tastes just like a sloppy joe. Oddly satisfying.

That damn Dairy\Milk, tough nut to crack. When getting into DIY I thought it was gonna be my ace in the hole for all my sweet milky needs; because surely that's how mothers milk, unicorns milk, milk man, and all the other strawberry or milky "premium juice" was made.

Purchasing that flavor and being disappointed is almost a right of passage for every new DIY'er. Lol

Same here. Still got two nearly full bottles of it left.

TFA Milk is absolutely incredible at 2%.

by PalefaceVaperabout 9 years ago

Are you using it at 2% straight up as the only milk\cream note in a mix? Or are you adding a bunch of other cream type flavors in conjunction to get a quality result?

TFA Meringue is a good addition for that too.

Don't own the TFA version, but love the FA version for milk & cream mixes

DX Banana Cream is the worst offender. It makes the entire room smell like barf. Luckily, it was pretty easy to recreate with FA flavors and remain "DX" style.

I do use still DX Banana cream, but not much of it. I add it to FA Cream fresh and FA Banana, and yeah, the whole room usually smells like a bar that doesn't check IDs.

Here is a post from this very sub from a year ago discussing adding minute amounts of butyric acid as a body enhancer for custard.

DX Bavarian Cream.

So sad, I tried, I really tried to learn to accept it, but just cannot.

Yeah, I get it from the Strawberries and Cream Flavor for sure, not soo much just the Strawberry Flavor ?!

Nearly put me off of the whole DIY thing but then i found the Mustard Milk recipe and no more 'Vomit'.

(Thank You Fizzmustard <3) :D

I had no idea this was in juices, and people were smelling vomit while vaping certain flavors.

How awful. Thanks for this.

It's not that bad. If you haven't noticed it yet, you won't notice it except in yogurts. It's in a ton of FA, CAP, and FLv flavors since it's a substitute for diacetyl.

I mostly notice it in the 'room note' and not in the taste itself

I knew there was a reason I hated TFA strawberry. I wish they'd do a butyric free version because the smell and taste is amazing if you can manage to ignore the puke note

Nah, I don't smell it, but my wife does and wanted mt to mix something up without it. She also smells pepper, but not sure what to search for, yet.
