Hey guys, I'm that New Amsterdam Vape guy. Over a year ago I made a DIY Tutorial video that got some views and was put up on the sidebar here. I recently decided to "remake" this video with more accurate information and better graphics.
You can check out the video here.
I feel the original video helped a lot of people start their DIY journey and I wanted to make a better version that acknowledges the upcoming FDA regulations. This is a more complete intro video packed with a lot of information, but I do hope this helps out any newbies out there...and maybe cuts down on sidebar questions...or increases them, I don't know.
Any feedback is welcome. I spent the last two months making this as complete as possible, so I don't think I missed anything. At least anything that a beginner needs to know.
So how long have you been editing this? Family put out your obituary yet?
It's been going on in my spare time over the last two months, slowly putting it all together. I focused on it the last three weeks and didn't do much else. They don't call it "Vape-life" for nothin'.
Also, don't mean to make you want to redo anything, but PG-based nicotine has nic rising to the top, as it's less dense. You even stated so when going over nicotine's specific weights.......^^Sorry^not^sorry
This is fantastic. So much good info, everything you need to get started, and beyond. I especially like the little recipe pyramids! Only criticism is the way you described the available starter kits. I'm afraid some people will believe they have everything needed, when most actually don't, or contain stuff you will never use, or weird flavors that no one else carries. I like that you first showed a breakdown of all the stuff needed when bought individually, and kind of wish you would have left it at that, but I know you were trying not scare people with the startup costs. Overall, enthusiastic thumbs up from me, great job!
Great work Jordan! Checked this out earlier today.
And I already embedded it on my fledgling "how to mix" page. :)
If that bothers you, let me know and I'll remove it.
I was ready to tear this to shreds and there's nothing to tear. You didn't imply someone is a loser by mixing by volume. You didn't shove complex gadgetry down our throats as a must have. Holy shit, you used the terms Age and Cure and promoted natural age. You implied people have hands to shake bottles with and don't have to rip their arms out of their sockets doing it every 2 hours. Rather, this video should be in the sidebar in a huge font. 10/10. Would view again. A+++!
I love how you've added an index in the description for easy navigation. This is very comprehensive, after watching this video I'm sure people could mix up a bunch of stuff no issues.
Might be worth splitting the video up into a playlist and giving each segment it's own title to maximize hits from people searching youtube/google for specific topics.
edit: It would definitely be worth adding this to the sidebar. The mods might even not have to refill their prescriptions for antidepressants as they will probably have a lot less busywork to do!
Your videos have been very helpful in explaining the basics to newcomers and this one looks to be even better - thank you!
It's only a minor point but [at 10:45] you suggest that "the easiest method is to assume that all flavors weigh the same as PG or VG so they're consistent with every mix".
While this would certainly be relevant for new unique recipes (and subsequent mixes), most new mixers are likely to be copying existing recipes that will almost always have been developed assuming a weight (or more correctly, the specific gravity) of 1gm/ml. So using anything other than 1:1 will produce a juice inconsistent with the original recipe.
In the video you then go on to demonstrate using ELR without noting that the PG-based flavourings are calculated using the 1:1 convention.
Incidentally, ELR recognises that even VG-based flavourings can't be assumed to weigh the same as (pure) VG so uses the value of 1.16gm/ml in calculating recipes.
He's essentially just saying to make sure you aren't giving VG and PG based concentrates the same weight.
I think he's introducing yet another 'solution' to the SG question - to use the weights of PG or VG rather than 1:1 or the actual weights - that'll add to newcomers' confusion.
Anything missing/incorrect from this summary?
> Every flavouring concentrate has a slightly different weight (or more correctly, specific gravity), so to keep things simple mixers came up with the convention of treating all flavours as weighing 1gm/ml.
> If you're intending to use one of the tens of thousands of recipes published online, this means that you could be adding up to 7% more or less of a concentrate than if you were measuring by volume but that will make such a tiny difference to the overall mix that it's considered an acceptable 'margin of error'. And as the recipe was almost certainly devised by another mixer using the 1:1 convention, you'll end up with exactly what they intended. > > Of course you're free to use the flavouring producer's individual weights for your recipes (ELR lists most of them on each flavor page) but if you publish them later it'll be important to note that you've used that method or others will mix the wrong quantities. > > The recent appearance of VG-based flavourings (and those in PDO) adds further complexities to mixing by weight and ELR currently calculates those as all weighing 1.16gm/ml.
I almost felt like I needed popcorn watching this last night. So well done—editing, graphics, info, the works.
I've been waiting to getting started for a while, researching supplies and such, but this new video almost makes me more comfortable and confident than anything else I've seen. Thanks for the hard work!
Is that your voice?
Amazing video my man!
I have been looking into making my own juice mainly for the cost reason and although I won't be doing it anytime soon this video will definitely be watched again before starting.
Also, the entire section about flavouring has put a new mindset in my head that will stick with me forever!
Thanks Jordan for everything you do. It was because of you I delved into mixing. I bought the Liquid Barn starter kit, paid that off in how much I would have spent in liquid, and have blossomed from there. I've sent your videos out to many friends that are looking into DIY.
The video was terrific (as is all of your videos). Succinct but informative. Also, I have always loved your narration and style. You are always clear with your explanations and exact with details. Oh, and I love your typography and animations too.
Nice Job Jordan! Your voice was made for radio and your editing skills on this are killer (i edited video 5 years broadcast). You really added the key steps here.
I am working on a tutorial how to page on my website. With you permission, I would love if I could use it in a DIY Beginner Page section.
Either way thanks for helping the new guys out there with such concise teaching!
