Ethyl Maltol (TPA)
submitted over 9 years ago by TexasHex

Notes

Only second to sucralose, EM is a most popular sweetner. A lot of DIY'ers scorn the use of it and vendors use it in a lot of mixes. If you want added sweetness to your mixes, get some and test it out. Ethyl Maltol is the other main ingredient in cotton candy besides sugar.

Use it like you'd use sweetener in a drink or salt in food.

Same as Cotton Candy sold by FW, TFA and Cap.

If your a stealth vaper, I'd leave this one out. I go to dive bars, clubs and concerts/shows occasionally and I can pick this smell out like a bloodhound.

"10% Pure Ethyl Maltol crystals (EM) from The Flavor Apprentice (TFA) dissolved in propylene glycol. EM is a very popular flavor enhancer used in making e-juice. It helps round out flavors, reduce sharp notes and adds sweetness as you add more in your mix. Check out the ECF and other online forums for great discussions and recommendations about how to use EM to enhance your juice!" - BCV

Am I the only person who can't taste EM?

All it does it mute juices to me.

I've been getting that too. When I made my own out of crystals a few years ago it was more prominent (cotton candy). But not the 10% solution stuff.

Why do people scorn ethyl maltol?

Just because vendors tend to use too much of it and some say it mutes flavors. Which in a way is kinda the purpose. It sweetens. Tones and rounds everything down.

I wouldn't say I scorn it altogether, it's just not a good idea for beginners just learning how to mix their own recipes. It can become a crutch if relied on too heavily since it has a tendency to mute flavors and hide imperfections.

I try to avoid it's use altogether in new recipes because it tends to kill all flavors for a while, not just the juice you are currently vaping. Check out the masters tips and tricks and see what it has to say about EM:

> EM is also known as Cotton Candy. Often referred to as a sweetener, though it really isn't. At low percentages, around 0.5-1% it adds body, moisture, and reduces sharp notes. It rounds off the flavors, and brings them out a bit. In other words, it reduces flavor intensity. 1.5-2.5% it significantly reduces flavor intensity. After vaping liquids with very high EM-content, many experience a distinct loss of flavor in anything else you vape, for an hour or more. Around 8-10%, it gives off a distinct burned sugar/cotton candy flavor, but without the sweetness of real cotton candy.
