A while back we had a thread about various wine flavors, and that's been just sort of lurking in the back of my mind for a while. Until recently, when I picked up a couple of wine concentrates during Memorial Day sales fun-time. First order of business was "make a fucking sangria ejuice" because sangria is great.
I opted to go with a basic sangria mix for my first attempt, so the fruits aren't very exotic but it did give me a good frame of reference for working with the wine concentrate.
Classic Sangria
-
3% FW Merlot
-
4% TPA Orange Mandarin
-
2% FA Lemon Sicily
-
1.5% FA Fuji
-
1% TPA Brown Sugar Extra
80 VG, 3mg nicotine.
FW Merlot: I lucked into the perfect amount of this on the first try. 3% is spot on, not too boozey, not overpowering, not too heavy. By itself, FW Merlot is already somewhat fruity with some apricot/plum, blackberry and leafy grape notes, and fairly light. If you're a Merlot aficionado, it's more like a traditional Merlot than a new-school one -- medium body, red berry notes. Overall, a really good base for sangria.
Fruits: I went pretty simple. Orange Mandarin and Fuji are both nice and sweet, with Fuji having some notes in common with the wine concentrate. Lemon Sicily has just enough tartness to make everything, especially the Merlot, really pop. Fuji is helpful in getting everything to blend together into a nice unified flavor, as well.
Brown Sugar EX: Just a little bit. This one really adds a lot of character without making the flavor too heavy. It provides the darker notes of brandy, does very nice things with Fuji, and brings the overall flavor up to a very enjoyable level of sweetness without it taking on a sticky mouth-feel.
I'm really pleased by the early results from this mix. It's smooth, light and very summery. While it does feel a little bit weird to be perfectly happy with the first attempt at a recipe, I'm trying super hard to squash my perfectionist tendency to fuck with something until I end up hating it.
I definitely want to play around with the fruit, since the sangria I usually make to drink is either heavier on the stone fruits (peach, apricot, plum) or heavier on the tropical fruits (mango, pineapple, kiwi). But I may end up doing absolutely nothing with this recipe except continuing to mix and vape it, because it really is tasty.
That's an interesting recipe idea. I'm curious if anyone else has had luck with something similar.
/u/CWinthrop was on like, variation/iteration 36 of his Bloody Mary before he quit DIY.
Sadly I don't have any of these, but I'll save this post for later. Someone let me know if you try this out! I love sangria.
It's really good! I don't really like wine (more of a beer gal myself) but the flavors all work really well together and now I kinda want to try a real sangria.
Also I promise I'm not biased just because I was sitting next to him as this was being mixed up. :v
I recently tried to replicate a wine flavor using flavors that are commonly described as notes in wine, with various berries, citrus, and a bit of chocolate. Bilberry should've added the earthiness, liquid amber would hopefully give it that fermented taste, but it didn't work out. The main taste of wine is probably going to be very hard to replicate without using an actual wine flavor.
