After reading several threads and watching some videos, I've gotten the impression that rigging up a device like this:

... would act more like a centrifuge and seperate the ingrideints at each end of the bottle.
But what if a similar device was used that offset 2 bottles at a 90 degrees like this:

Would the 2nd method work as a DIY mixer, or am I missing some physics here?
I don't know if it would separate things, but it probably wouldn't to much mixing if any.
Naaaah... It doesn't separated and doesn't mix for long if any. I've tried it with a broken hand blender I tried to give a new purpose. The big problem is balancing the center of mass on the bottle you try to spin. Those rubber bands wont prevent them from flying over the room.
If you can spare an electric motor somehow and got some crafting going on; making a magnetic stirrer surface is pretty simple and worth it. I still need to figure out a nice way to heat it instead of periodically dunk the bottles back into hot water...
The rubber bands did the trick on a 15mL, but even on the fastest spin, no air bubbles were present in the mixture afterwards and I'm convinced that the solution separated more than mixed.
If I use a drill at all, the only way I think it would work is by spinning it on the same axis as the cap, causing the sides of the bottle to create drag on the internal liquid. Wouldn't aerate the mixture, but it would distribute the compound well enough.
I'll probably end up rigging a magnetic stirrer in the end, but I'm a tinkerer at heart and I'd like to see what I come up with ;)

I use a jigsaw. I replaced the blade with a small bar clamp. A 15 second shake is all it takes to get a really good mix, to a milky consistency.
This rig fits 15 & 30ml bottles quite well. The bar clamp was almost a perfect fit into the jigsaw, and just took a few strokes with a hand file to thin the bar down to fit into the jigsaw. http://i.imgur.com/OSrH3KJ.jpg
I just use some 26/28 gauge kanthal, make it into a whisk type thing and shove it in a drill, bends enough to mix in whatever bottle and no separation problems. Works a treat
If you want to rig something up use a reciprocal saw? and attach the bottle to the blade. The saw were the blade goes in and out.

You should replace the blade with something dull because the blade will cut through duct tape. And electrical tape. And a zip tie. The best I found was a pipe cleaner, twisted tight the metal gets in between the teeth and moves around less, so it lasts longer. Does a hell of a job!
How much of a difference does this make versus shaking by hand?
I use a Conair Foot Spa! The vibrations are perfect, on the warm setting for 12 to 24hrs and then, let it cures for the 3-4weeks. Every miX I have had done so far, has been at its greatest at the end of each batch but awesome after their spa treatment! Lo L
I am Just recently starting to make larger batches 220-500mL so that I have them at their best with a 4-6 week rest.
In regards to your Post, I too remember reading that the Juce turning End to End has the largest turn ratio unto its self. My Cuz tapes up his bottles and throws them in the laundry with a load on medium heat for an hour, he says the results are amazing for getting the Juce past those early stages of the mix 8D
