Throat hit too harsh
submitted over 9 years ago by ndvLinh

Hi guys, so I started with DIY by making a 30ml bottle of 50/50 (6mg) with a single flavour 5% Fruit Mix (FA), after a few shakes I started to vape, it was delicious and the throat hit was just alright. However, a few days later the throat hit had become stronger and stronger, which was the exact opposite from my expectation - shouldn't the time make it steep and better? So I've read a few articles and come to the conclusion of lowering the flavour percentage by adding more of the nicotine base. It didn't help. So I thought I should add 0 nic base (50/50) to lower the nicotine strenght. Now I have 40ml of 50/50 with approx. 3mg/ml of nicotinen and about 2% of single flavour, why is it still harsh? (the problem is the liquid, I am sure, since when I tried my friend's 3mg 50/50 juice, it was just smooth as it should be).

My fellow vapers, please help!

If I'm reading this correctly, you tried it without the nicotine, correct?

If so, you are likely allergic to a compound in the flavoring.

It happens. Almost everyone has something they can't vape.

Allergic is the wrong word for this, sensitivity is what you're looking for.

Allergic reactions involve proteins, & ain't nobody vaping on proteins.

What word would you use then to describe the exact interaction then?

So if I'm allergic to tree nuts when I eat, I won't be when I vape because there are no proteins in flavorings? I've been wanting a hazelnut flavor because Nutella smells incredible but it will kill me (I'm also allergic/sensitive to whey protein). Obviously I have passed with the milky flavors, but hazelnut has really caused me some large problems in the past. Is there anyway to find the shared compounds of the flavorings and the actual nut?

Nutella will kill you? Man, I wouldn't want to live... Although remember that Nutella is a hazelnut cocoa spread so it's good because of both not just the hazelnut. Personally I wouldn't risk it if I was that allergic, but I'm just some dumb ass who doesn't know shit about it.

Nut flavours are comprised of pyrazines, completely unrelated to proteins; but there may be cause for concern with natural flavours. You should be okay with most nut flavours.

You have to research what is inside the flavour and email the flavour maker if their flavours can induce allergic reaction. And even if they say no I would try just taking one or two puffs from the juice and wait few hours to see if nothing happens.

There are loads of different things that aren't proteins that cause allergic reactions. Most sensitivities are essentially just reactions to allergens.

Thank your for a quick reply. I havent't tried the flavour with 0 nicotine yet. But I reduced the concentration of nicotine from 6 to 3mg/ml. Well, if I am allergic, wouldn't the strong throat hit be already present from the beginning? Because the first few days of vaping were alright (besides the fact that the harshness become more and more noticable)

The fact that it got more harsh could be a one off thing. Your throat could have gotten more and more irritated, nic could have oxidized more, you might have just noticed it more, etc.

Pretty much what /u/CosmoVerde said.

When I first tried vaping TFA Juicy Peach, it was a slight tingle at first, but then progressively grew stronger and stronger the more I tried to vape it.

Also, I HIGHLY suggest doing the testing that /u/CosmoVerde suggested in his top post.

No. I was vaping Pixy by Time Bomb for about 2 weeks. The first few days were fine, then I developed a bit of a phlegmy cough. It didn't go away until I switched juices to a max vg.

Mix 3 bottles. 5-10ml each.

Bottle 1: 50/50 PG/VG, no nic, no flavor.

If it's harsh the PG is probably your problem. Mix at higher vg.

Bottle 2: 50/50 of/VG, 6mg nic, no flavor

If it's harsh then your nic might be bad. Is the nic base yellowing? Did you shake it thoroughly?

Bottle 3: 50/50 blend, 6mg nic, 5% flavoring.

If it's harsh try dropping your flavor percentage to 3. Still harsh? Drop to 1%. Off the top of my head 5% is a lot for FA.

based on this 3-4% is what you should use

Thanks for the tip, I will try the 3 bottles asap. Btw I actually didn't shake the nic base thinking that it is needed only when the nic base is mixed with flavour, aren't I right?

Shake your base. The nic can separate from whatever it's suspended in.

What strength and PG/VG ratio is your base?

So should I shake the nic base before every use? Thanks

And yeah 5% might be too much for FA, but after dilluting the first 5% blend with 0 nic base, not only the nic dropped from 6 to 3 but also the flavour dropped from the initial 5% to 2.5%, not sure if the flavour concentration is the problem

What are you referring to '0 nic base'?

Did you add PG or VG?

1 points

by ndvLinhover 9 years ago

Its a base 50/50 with 0 nic, so the pg/vg ratio was the same as the first 6mg nic base

PG allergie? This is why alot of people got max VG. They are irratated by the PG.

Did you:

  • Shake nic before use (already answered)
  • Shake your concentrates before use
  • Shake your PG/VG (you should get some of each, it's cheap)
  • Shake after making
  • Steep adequately
  • Shake again before filling
  • Re-wick and check for hotspots

Any of these can factor in to harshness, besides PG or individual concentrate sensitivity/allergies.

several reasons come to mind

didn't shake nic base before mixing, didn't shake concentrate before mixing, oxidized nic base, water absorbing into base (yes just regular air can be the culprit), sensitivity to the flavor (love cinnamon myself but can't vape too much with out getting congested), too much flavoring (i haven't tried this flavor so i can't comment on how much is too much), it is summer as well so juice sitting around in the heat can cause issues.. last thing to think about it not the juice but the device did you try rewicking did the coils gunk up super fast? is your tank plastic?

solution is to try all elements separate to find which is causing the issue, good luck ! if it is the flavoring remeber you can always put it to use in other ways.
