Help transferring 50lb bucket of VG to smaller bottles
submitted over 9 years ago by 401Vapes

I ordered 50lbs of VG from bulk apothecary thinking it would just be delivered in 5 1-gallon bottles similar to the glycube. It's in a massive bucket. Any easy way to fill 1 liter bottles with this massive bucket? Thanks for any help.

Seems like a funnel would be the appropriate answer here.

I didn't even think about a funnel.

Should work just fine. Now I'm thinking in should have bought 50lbs instead of a glycube :)

At this point it's a pallet of 4 - 55 gallon drums (2200lbs IIRC) and a fork lift. The electric drum pumps feed tubes into the clean room with a nice little handle, sort of like a gas pump. That gets pumped into 10 gallon mixing vats with a drain at the bottom. Life is much easier now.

I started crying as soon as I opened the box. :(

I heard that the 7th level of Hell involves a 100lb bucket of VG, a bunch of 15ml unicorns and 1ml pipettes that tear after 2 dispenses.

Please delete that comment, you just gave me nightmares for the next two weeks... i dont want any other poor soul to feel that pain.

VG is easier to mix if it's warmed. The 7th level of Hell needs to be slightly cooler than room temperature to be truly horrendous.

If you're confident the bucket can be tipped and poured easily, I'd say use a funnel. Or just get a giant turkey baster.

Yeah, I'll just funnel it into some empty gallon bottles I have left. A funnel truly didn't cross my mind when I made this post.

Be aware that funnels can back up a LOT and all of a sudden VG everywhere.

Thank you for the warning. I've had to clean up half a gallon of it before when I got a delivery with an unknown leak until a few hours later. It was no fun.

Could probably tape a straw to the inside so air escapes to avoid that.

Edit: or use a rubber band at the top or something.

Also, put the bucket in a hot bathtub for a bit to make it less viscous. You'll thank me later.

Also, you might wanna use that tub to do the pouring to catch and spills. Just saying.

3ml disposable pipettes are the answer. You're welcome

Homebrewing buckets often have a spigot on the bottom and a capacity of about 6-7 gallons. You could pour into one of those and then fill smaller bottles from the spigot.

Dunno what they go for in the US - probably $10-20 at a guess.

That's a damn good idea. And they can seal air tight.

Get one of these:

Get one of these an install on above

Pour VG into bucket and use above to fill whatever.

Description says lid is sold separately and is not liquid tight.

I suppose if it was viable for only some liquids, VG would be one of them, but still...

Siphon it out with a hose.

Yup. Break the funnel out. I just painted the top of my engine, so I'd like to not get engine oil all over it; hence why I use a funnel for motor oil.

gotta use a funnel on my Kawi ZX6R, engineering gurus decided to put the oil intake at a slight angle. makes pouring sans funnel a dicy proposition.

Ugh, I can't imagine how much of a pain bikes are with placement of where to put refills and serviceable parts.

Upvote for the proper use of "sans"!

Don't bother with pumps, they break so easily with VG.

I was told to get that by another DIY'er, works perfect.

And pour with the bucket on it's side and start with the spout at the TOP. Gives you control, you can roll it side to side to start and stop flow.

God yes, good tip! Had to learn the hard way for that one :D

Not aure how well sythoning it will work. Maybe with a good hard initial suck it will work? I've never tried to shift such a large amount of vg, but have had problems using funnels in smaller bottles due to how thick it is.

Truck stops often sell a siphon hose with a hand pump works great for diesel fuel. You may have been a kung foo grip to get VG through the hose. Still think this would be the cleanest way.

Skip ahead for a 5 gallon bucket.

Put it on it's side and roll it, assuming it has a cap in the lid.

Mine doesn't have a cap in the lid sadly. I ordered one with the cap just in case the funnel method goes south tomorrow.

Use a jug with a handle...

Use your second stomach to consume all of the vg and then regurgitate the vg in your second stomach in smaller portions into bottles of your choosing.
