Gentleman's Custard
Creamy butterscotch and a smooth, buttery vanilla custard dominate the inhale; but, is balanced by a sweet, nutty and roasted tobacco exhale, with lingering notes of maple and brown sugar.
Recipe
-
RY4 Double (TPA) 6%
-
Butterscotch (FLV) 3%
-
Brown Sugar (TPA) 1%
-
Vanilla Custard (CAP) 5.5%
-
Acetyl Pirazine (TPA) 0.5%
Total Flavouring: 16%
Steep Time: 4+ Weeks
Pairs well with ales, stouts and dark beers, from complimenting flavours.
Notes:
- RY4 Double (TPA):
One of the sweeter tobacco's flavours with notes of caramel and vanilla. It's slightly earthy, nutty, a tad smokey, and just a great mellow tobacco flavour. Can be a bit dry on the exhale but we can balance that out.
- Butterscotch (FLV):
Very spot on butterscotch taste, although it's not very creamy nor is it very sweet. The use of the additional caramel's add to the body and depth of the butterscotch profile. At 3% it's presence is unmistakable.
- Brown Sugar (TPA):
Used mainly for it's sweetness but also for it's similar compounds that help boost the existing caramel and butterscotch notes.
- Vanilla Custard (CAP):
I have tried using other custards, (FA, TPA, FLV) and although each were good, they just... well aren't CAP's vanilla custard. I have a hard time not resorting to using CAP's v1 but at least I gave it a shot. It's buttery, very rich, creamy, tasty and just works so well here. It's really the body, the backbone of this recipe, but can easily be swapped out for a different custard profile. Although, I don't suggest it.
- Acetyl Pirazine (TPA):
Is used to round out the tobacco and increase it's roasted and nutty profile.
Am I the only one who thinks that's a pretty terrible name. Like, I don't want to make spunk flavored juice...
To each, their own. Some may like a little spunk in their juice..
Nice, I've been hankering for a good RY4 custard. Only thing I have to swap is butterscotch, for FW or FA.
Also, I imagine swapping the AP for a good nut flavour like FA Almond would be amazing too.
You've found it. Give it a try, swap it out. And, I'd imagine your right. FA Almond at the same percent should work out nicely. Or even TPA's Toasted Almond mixes well with tobacco
What percentage do you think would be best for FW butterscotch?
I don't actually have experience with FW to recommend a percentage.
But a quick glance at /u/NotCharlesManson's Butterscotch recipe, it looks like you could stay with the same 3%
Cyclotene much. /u/abdada
Tell me more about these brown sugar compounds.
Vanillin, Acetoin, Acetyl Propionyl and Cyclotene. All the good stuff of course.
Interesting. I have never tried RY4, but this sounds damn good.
Ironic, I just mixed up your Churrios recipe this past weekend and letting it sit for a bit. Looking forward to it, so thanks for that!
Some of the best custards i ever had did not contain Capellas V1 custard.
That stuff is instantly recognizable even whiffing it from a few feet away lol.
The overpowering butter gives it away , not sure what the recipes were for the ones i had but would LOVE to know.
I've really been enjoying a combination of FA and FLV. I tend to play around with the other custards I have but end up always falling back to CAP's lol.
I'm a big fan of FLV's Vanilla Custard. It's lighter on the vanilla, and more creamy as opposed to dense, so it doesn't weigh down recipes too much but still provides that body you're looking for. Fairly concentrated too so you don't need to go above 2-3%
I've always wanted to be a gentleman.
I need to grab some FLV Butterscotch though. TFA is the only one I have, but it's way too sharp and dry for my liking. I've been due for an order for months now. If I mix this up within the coming weeks I'll let you know my thought.
Sounds perfect to go with a side of Gentleman's Sausage.
Serious though, I love RY4 and this sounds really good. If you don't mind me asking, what kind of setup do you use? I've found that I don't enjoy tobacco vapes with my usual low sub-ohm builds and have to build a little higher and restrict the airflow a little more.
Personally I enjoy using mouth-to-lung tanks for tobacco flavours. I find I can get full on thick, dense flavour from my Pico at 15-25 watts with a single vertical or horizonal coil.
Looks great, thanks for sharing. Though I can't say that I'm a butterscotch fan, and will probably drop FLV Butterscotch. I'd love to hear what you'd propose if you had to sub something with similar compounds. Off the bat I'm thinking FA Caramel @ 1% or 2% max. I'm a sucker for caramel custards already, so with RY4 sounds amaze.
Vaping now after a 25 day age. I subbed FW Butterscotch in place of FLV at the same percentage. This is a really good vape, the AP was a great addition to the RY4. I didn't think it would have much of an impact but it fits in perfectly. I'm going to mess around with subbing FW Butterscotch Ripple and see what happens, I imagine it will make it more creamy. It's not necessary though as this is a good recipe as is. Good work!
Any chance you have a little bottle of triacetin laying around? I' don't have RY4 Double and I'm curious if 0.5% triacetin to this might mute flavors or bring out the nuttiness more.
Not yet. Although, I've been meaning to pick up, no thanks to your information available. When I do, I'll make it a point to remember to post back with notes.
