Good morning DIY!
Been a while, hasn't it? I'm going to be honest, I haven't been as active as I should be considering I run a podcast dedicated to helping new mixers. But, life has been a nightmare lately. The only saving grace is that I finally am getting some consistency with my new job. But, dealing with my ex girlfriend/baby momma kicking me out, still being broke as a joke, looking for a new apartment, and trying to keep up with my now-crawling seven month old son, it's been a hectic few weeks. Mixing, and redditing in general has taken a back seat. But I'm back with something new this morning that I'm really enjoying.
Without further ramblings, I give you my first attempt at a Peach Clafouti vape. Recipe, concept, and flavour notes below, as always.

Recipe Concept
So I had been struggling with ideas for a new recipe, and I figured to go back to my kitchen recipe book to find something fresh that I hadn't tried before. The Berry Clafouti recipe really seemed like it would work as a vape, but I still struggle with my berry recipes, so I figured I'd attempt to finally nail a decent peach vape that didn't rip my throat apart on every inhale. A clafouti is a French dessert that is sort of a custard, sort of a cake, sort of a pie, loaded with a bunch of fruit. Typically berries or cherries, but any sort of soft ripe fruit will work. I thought that the use of the already pleasant FA Peach and White Peach would be delicious, and only be complimented by the use of the cakey elements.
Flavour notes
FA Peach/FA White Peach/FA Pear - the fruit base in the recipe, obviously. I love peach in general, but trying to figure out a peach vape has just been difficult. TFA Juicy Peach destroys my throat and lungs even on the first pull. FA Peach is still a little harsh, but not as bad. The mix of FA Peach and FA White Peach is smooth, and gives an enjoyable, fleshy, sweet peach punch on the inhale. Using a touch of FA Pear just smooths out everything even more, while also helping boost the natural sweetness of the peach, without adding too much of a pear flavour.
FA Apple Pie/INW Biscuit/FA Cookie - I use this trio in any sort of recipe that calls for a sort of crumble aspect. Clafouti can be made a few different ways based on the use of almost all three pastry elements of cake, pie, and custard. I love crumble in my desserts, and the mix of these three flavours creates a perfect crumble element. The FA Apple Pie at lower percentages pushes the pie crust taste with just a touch of fruitiness. The INW Biscuit and FA Cookie combo brings the AP taste to give a crunchy, baked, bready note. If you want more of a bready texture/note, up the FA Cookie to 1%. Any higher and you start getting too much of a biscotti type flavour, which isn't needed here.
TFA Vanilla Bean Ice Cream/FA Fresh Cream - this is the part I'm going to be playing with more in future versions of the recipe. Not to say it doesn't work as is, but it needs more work to really push that custard flavour. The use of VBIC and Fresh Cream creates a nice cream base that isn't too eggy, but it's a little too "safe" for my liking. We still get that nice rich mouthfeel from the VBIC, and the Fresh Cream keeps it from feeling or tasting greasy, but it needs more of that "sour" twang you get from a proper custard. Still, as is, you get a nice cream note from these two flavours that keeps the peach from being harsh, while also giving more mouthfeel to the vape as a whole.
TFA Brown Sugar/CAP Sugar Cookie - these are just the complement notes in the recipe. These two flavours seem to play around with all of the other elements in the mix. The Brown Sugar gives a bit more depth and "ripeness" to the fruits, a bit more crunch to the crumbles, and just a little protection from the creams getting too powerful. The CAP Sugar Cookie works as a bit of a barrier between the fruit and the custard, keeping them from binding too much. Without the Sugar Cookie, it seemed to feel like all the flavours were just thrown into a blender. With CAP Sugar Cookie, we get a bit more of a full, cakey mouthfeel, while also keeping the fruit flavours heavy on the inhale, with the other bakery elements lingering more as the aftertaste.
70VG/30PG - Shake and Vape approved, 2-3 days steep for optimal flavour
Well there we go. A new recipe. Let me know if you mix it up and enjoy it. Let me know if you hate it. Let me know if you see anything that can be changed. And if you've ever had a real clafouti dessert, let me know how accurate it is. It seems like it's definitely getting close, but it still needs work.
Version 2 coming soon. But not as soon as is usual for me.
Cheers!
My brother! This looks amazing!
Sadly, these peaches still destroy my lungs.
I think this will be a good recipe to start experimenting with apricot as a peach substitute
When I tried White Peach solo I didn't notice too much harshness. Interesting you mention apricot, I was thinking of maybe trying this with subbing the FA Peach for FA Apricot since it's the only ingredient I'm missing.
Something I've noticed from working with peach and custard is that the peach concentrates tend to tone down some of that weird eggy note in custards, so you might be able to get some of a lighter custard flavor in there without it going too far in that direction. Particularly it's TFA Juicy Peach that does it, I think because of that nice syrupy quality it has when it's not too busy being all throat-melty and harsh.
I've actually been working on a peach cobbler and have discovered the very same thing.
Juicy Peach definitely tones down the egginess in CAP Vanilla Custard V1, almost to the point that the custard nearly vanishes from the mix. I'm still tweaking the mix to figure out a good balance, but they work together quite well.
I don't have the flavors to create the bakery elements in your recipe, but it looks great and I really appreciate the tip on using FA Pear to round out FA White Peach and FA Peach. Thanks!
Damn man, this looks incredible! I haven't ever had a peach vape I really liked so I'm interested in this one to say the least. I'm missing the FA peach so I can't mix it up straight away but I hope to be tasting this sometime in the near future! Welcome back =)
I was saying "oh no" in my head increasingly and repeatedly as I was reading the recipe because I have all these flavors. My days of ~8 flavor mixes are beyond done, I've found 3 or 4 flavors maybe with an additive to match store bought juice but it's usually even better in terms of taste and consistency. But that's the beauty of DIY I suppose you can have something delicious with just a few flavors or you can have a friggin culinary masterpiece explode in your mouth with double that amount, provided you know what you're mixing.
The last recipe I mixed that was this large however was Rhodonite and that's still my favorite flavor to date, so out of my love for peaches I'll have to try this. Will report back tn/tm and if I remember a week from now.
Thank you!/Whyyyyy!
