TIL that reaction to nitrogen can turn nicotine a reddish color
submitted over 9 years ago by Binsky89

I ordered 500ml of 100mg/ml nicotine from Carolina Xtracts. When I was dividing it into smaller bottles, I poured it into a clear drinking glass to make things easier to work with.

While I was dividing it up, I noticed the nicotine in the glass was a reddish/pink hue. Of course I assumed it was oxidized.

I finally got ahold of someone at Carolina Xtracts today. He told me that the reddish color was a reaction to the nitrogen they use to make sure the nicotine doesn't come into contact with oxygen. He said it mostly happens when the batch was extracted at night, and the nicotine has to sit overnight before being bottled.

Also, avoid nicotine in VG. It's a huge bitch to work with.

That's all I use. No problems at all with me. Just use a better syringe

But doesn't help the need to shake it like a baby born addicted to crack.

I ended up pouring my whole vg nic bottle into a big gallon tub and mixed it with 40% pg then took the drill took it.. So now I have 60mg instead of 100mg but it is WAY easier to work with.

I shake VG nic once. Just once, vigorously. It then goes in the freezer & almost never gets shaken again. I've never had hotspots. Ya'll crazy. VG Nic really only needs to be shaken once every few months or so.

I have some 15g coming from fasttech, so we'll see. Definitely getting pg next time, though.

I'd wondered this myself after a previous order, broken down, had a pink tint to it... never got darker, though. I, too, passed it off as oxidized, but since it didn't seem to affect the flavor (i.e. peppery, harshness, etc.), I didn't worry worry much about it and figured it was just the batch.

Anyhow, good to know...

Mine was harsh after mixing 3mg/ml pure VG, but I might have just hit a nicotine pocket.

I'm almost positive it's the VG and nitrogen creating the reaction, it has nothing to do with the nicotine.

You're probably right. If it was the nitrogen and nic, there would be some loss in nic, which would be unacceptable since they produce for pharmaceuticals.
