- Monk Fruit Extract -- I've been making my own blend of this for about 6 months and the stuff is sugary sweet with a hint of spice. Really potent. Haven't seen coils gunk because of how little you need to sweeten
- Stevia Reb A -- I personally hate this stuff because whatever I've made myself is just too bitter. Hopefully they've fixed that by not using the stems.
- Erythritol -- This is my favorite sweetener currently, and I haven't personally seen any gunking issues. The fact that it dissolves better in VG than PG is a surprise to me, but I trust Jake's chemistry.
In every situation comparing any of these to sucralose or maltol/ethyl maltol, you SHOULD see less gunking, although it is feasible you'll get less mouth feel out of any of these. I prefer the monk fruit extract because it's such a fine sugary flavor, and the hint of spice adds well to everything I've thrown it into (fruits, bakery, tobaccos, etc).
In food flavoring, some "diet" or "low carb" manufacturers of food and drink products are teaming Monk Fruit extract with Stevia to try to reduce the bitter aftertaste of Stevia. I've not done much mixing the two because I really tend to hate Stevia.
I was wondering when erythritol would make it's way into diy as a sweetener. I may have to pick some up and play around with it. I've never been a fan of the standard sweeteners.
The problem with it is that most of the powder forms of it contain bulking agents which you don't want to vape. The stuff I use is only a little more expensive but is 100% pure (or at least as pure as I've found).
I really like the stuff for giving me that "sweet lips" feel of sucralose, without the lower temperature issues.
Have you tried Now Foods brand? They state their stuff is 100% pure and don't list any anti clumping/bulking agents in the ingredients. Thinking of ordering a bag of that.
/u/abdada To get that
> "Sweet lips" feel of sucralose.
What percentage are you using?? NN discription says its 1/4 - 1/2 strength compared to sucralose . So, if you use 2% sucralose to get that feel, is it safe to assume 4% will do the trick of erythritol??
You can taste the bitterness in Reb A? I could always taste the bitterness in full Stevia extract, but not Reb A.
Yep, I've tried probably 10 different Reb A mixes/brands and I always taste the hint of bitter aftertaste. Drives me bonkers.
I should mention that it's possible I have some weird allergy to stevia in general -- if I eat it, my blood pressure drops and I definitely have passed out before.
What percentages are these used at, on average? I know it varies depending on the recipe, but it is similar to any other sweetener %'s? Or EM?
Yep, same percentages but of course "to taste, and test with steeping" like all sweeteners.
I generally like them all at 1-5% at the dilutions that NN offers. 5% of monk fruit would probably be stellar.
Do they have any tendency to mute flavors in any way like EM sometimes does?
Hmm, stevia in vape juice seems like it might be kind of gross. I pretty much only like it as a sweetener for coffee and tea, where the stevia bitterness blends into the coffee/tea bitterness and gets covered up for the most part.
Monk fruit looks promising, though. I have a couple of recipes that would really benefit from the sweet/spice aspect.
Nice to see alternatives over sucralose emerging, I do have my own personal issues with stevia though I just can't stand it for whatever reason.
I can't shake the weird feeling from stevia -- even if I don't know it's in a product, I get light headed and need to sit down. Once had a freaking "tic tac" style candy that someone gave me 5 of and after eating them I got all woozy and asked if they were artificially sweetened. They said "nope, uses stevia!" ugh.
Definitely going to give these a go. Sucralose just has too artificial a taste for my... tastes and E.Maltol isn't my cup of tea. FA Caramel has been my sweetener of choice for a while though I'm looking to try something with a more neutral sweetness.
Cheers for the notice.
For anyone not subscribed to NN's Chemist Corner newsletter, I'd highly recommend it. I don't do much Nic business with Nude anymore mainly because of price but Jake definitely knows his shit and those Chemist Corner newsletters are always worth my time to read.
You can sign up right from the main page of NN's site.
P.S. it looks like they also publish it to twitter
