Cutting back on flavor to reduce gunk
submitted over 9 years ago by nox_mani

So I just started with DIY and ordered a "recipe kit" from ecig express.

The juice tastes amazing but after less than a day of vaping, my coils are getting gunky and the cotton has pretty much turned black. I'm vaping it on a .5 ohm dual coil at 45 watts.

The flavoring percentage for the mix is a little less than 10%. Would dropping it down to say 7.5% or less show any reasonable improvement with the gunking issue without muting the flavor too much?

Edit: Thanks for all the responses guys. I think I'm going to try making some substitutions in the recipe for the yellow cake. Also, I'm trying the original juice on a different rda with a slightly different build and wick setup to see if that was contributing at all. (I haven't had issues with a scottish roll before but I can easily imagine the dense cotton being a contributing factor.)

It might. Bronuts is pretty heavy on extracts that gunk up coils... yellow cake and chocolate glazed donut in particular.

It's a pretty good flavor, I'm just worried that if I cut it too much, I won't get any flavor out of it.

I'm thinking of just doing the math and adding some VG to the little bottle I've been dripping from to see if that works.

Yeah, I wouldn't go too drastic on the cuts. Having never mixed Bronuts myself (I know, I know... borderline heresy) I'm not sure where the minimum optimal flavoring percentage might be.

Believe it or not, adding a small amount of distilled water can actually increase the sensation of taste/smell/flavor -- maybe give that at try. If you do, please let me know how it goes! (I imagine you would want to compare the standard recipe to an identical juice that has a few drops of distilled water meticulously blended throughout.)

What sort of flavours are you using? Coffee and tobaccos?

(7%) Chocolate Glazed Doughnut by Capella

(0.75%) Joy By FlavourArt

(1%) Yellow Cake by Flavor West

(0.75%) Biscuit by Inawera

I'm assuming most of the gunk is coming from the chocolate donut which was pretty dark in the bottle.

The gunk is mainly coming from Yellow Cake because Flavor West puts Fructose in it.

I've mixed Bronuts without yellow cake using FA Nonna's Cake and didn't have any gunking issues.

I might have to try out your substitution. It's such a good flavor I'd hate to pass on it because of a technical issue. Did you do just do a 1:1 swap for yellow cake or did you use a different percentage?

Deff yellow cake. I replaced it with flavorah cupcake batter and im getting more life out of my coils.

At 1% flavoring? Even if it was 100% sucralose it wouldn't be the main thing causing gunning. Def the chocolate causing some of it as well.

I don't know then. That seems very quick to gunk.

Do a search for the flavours you use with 'gunk' to find out of there's any well known offenders.

FW Yellow Cake is known to be a gunker, at least partially because it contains a bunch of fructose. CAP Chocolate Glazed Donut probably has some gunking qualities as well, most chocolates seems to.

One day does seem pretty quick but no surprise that it's gunking eventually.

I recommend you follow the flavor percentages provided with the mix as this should provide optimum flavor.

You will probably just have to deal with the gunking as long you use this recipe. I find that there are certain flavors that just seem to be really bad for this, and avoiding them typically lets me vape through at least 120ml without cotton blackening. I only go through like 6-8 ml a day though.

The bro nuts recipe uses flavors that quickly gunk up your coils, lots of gunk in just a few hours can be normal. Cutting the flavor percentages may help, but you obviously can't cut too much or you won't have a good flavor. Even if you cut it the affect on the bunking of your coils may not even be that much improved, just adding maybe a few my hours of vaping before your coils get too gunned.
