I've been mixing DIY for about 8 months now, but I've found that I do not like to use ECR or AllTheFlavors. First, they're not extremely user friendly. And secondly, I want my recipes to be completely private until I'm satisfied with the flavor. SO, I decided to build a database of my own.
I have a basic database built utilizing Filemaker on Mac, but I'm wondering if I can get some assistance and comments/recommendations to further this database for the community. I intend to release to anyone who would like to use it.
Right now, it is based on volume measurements only, but as my scale and pipettes are on the way, I will work to convert it to weight for easier mixing.
If you are interested in trying it out and giving some ideas, please feel free to PM me. If I've posted this to the wrong place, please don't kill me /u/abdada...
I'd love a Mac compatible calculator and database. I use ELR but having something local would be so much better for keeping my flavor notes, recipes and such. Also a flavor base calculator addition would be great, basically a Mac clone of the Recipe Calculator on the sidebar.
I'd like to go above just recipes and a calculator. I use it more as a journal/notebook for keeping all mixing notes, multiple variations on each recipe, dates or mixes, etc...
I've been looking for a Mac-based "recipe book" for ages. I am also with you on keeping it local. I would really like to test out your application, once you get weights sorted out.
Will this come with or synchronize with an ingredient database? ELR is great for this, would love to have this available locally.
Feel free to PM me for beta after adding weights! Looking good
What's not private about ATF? :)
:). Let's just say the only place I can assure my data is safe is on my encrypted drives. Besides, putting single flavor tasting notes on someone else's site seems foolish, and time consuming.
Are you actually worried about somebody hacking ATF and stealing your recipes? You also mention "user friendly" in your original post, having to maintain a privately encrypted database on a local hard drive sounds like the completely opposite of user friendly.
I'm trying to keep out of the technical side, and keep more to the DIY side of this. But basically, full disk encryption is easy. No work at all. Second: A local computer program doesn't require any form of internet access. I can take it anywhere, (I'm active duty military, so mobility is key)
is ATF down right now? I keep getting this on my desktop and mobile device as well. Not the mobile app since I have an iPhone :(
OK, back up now, I'll be monitoring, but looks like something was really hammering me for a while there.
There's one argument in favor of local apps like the one this post is about! :)
I thought Evolv made a vape law that said no macs allowed in vaping!
LOL. But to avoid the Mac/windoze argument, I only build on reliable computers.
What?
#LOL. BUT TO AVOID THE MAC/WINDOZE ARGUMENT, I ONLY BUILD ON RELIABLE COMPUTERS.

Interesting.
Your screenshot has nicotine 0 mg. What happens when you change that to 3 mg? What I'm asking is, does it perform that calculation for you or do you have to do it yourself? And can you use it for a variety of nicotine bases, from 48mg/mL in 50/50 VG/PG or whatever people use to to 100mg/mL in 100% VG or PG?
At this point, it is just for my reference when mixing. It doesn't perform any actual calculation (yet). I mix with 100mg/ml nic, so I know that 30ml calls for .9ml of nic for 3mg. It will be more functional when I switch to weight mixing, and if someone else used a different nic concentration.
How about a way to keep track of orders? That would be extremely helpful. This way I can use the same program for everything that I need instead of ELR for this and google docs for something else
That's a great idea! I was working on a wish list function... But putting those two together would be awesome.
additionally, is there a max vg option similar to that of ELR?
I can select the pg/vg ratio I want by drop downs and it'll spit out the volume or each. It'd take some research and work, but there's also the idea to add the pg/vg ratio of flavors too.. It'd make for a more accurate ratio. Right now, I unilaterally assume my flavors are 100% pg.
Edit: as I retread this, I realized this would be more helpful in nic bases.

I made FMP solution for this a few years ago. But ended up not needing it as I settled on a couple recipes over a year ago. Let me know if you want to collaborate on yours and I’ll dig mine out and dust it off.
I use a Numbers spreadsheet as a recipe calculator and database; it works for both mixing by weight and mixing by volume. It automatically calculates the volume and weight of each ingredient, and still works if you add or delete rows to add or remove ingredients. Right now, it's only set for my own use (mixing at max VG at 3 mg/mL using 60 mg/mL PG-base nicotine), but I'm working on getting full functionality allowing user-selectable mix preferences added so it will work for everyone.
