First, a little backstory on how this recipe came to be. I work with a 60 something year old man (we'll call him Doug) who rolled his own cigarettes for nearly 40 years before being turned on to vaping. In 2 days, the stubborn old bastard had decided that he liked vaping RY4 through a Nautilus tank a lot more than cigarettes. It took Doug about a month of calling it Y2K or RO420 before he nailed down the RY4 terminology.
Now, for an old man, this guy has the energy level of a 5 year old ADHD patient halfway through a case of Mountain Dew. He puts down cookies and doughnuts like I put down whiskeys on a Friday night, he despises vegetables, and enjoys peanut butter on his roast beef sandwiches. He's an eccentric old guy who really loves his sugar. He has recently taken a keen interest in my DIY hobby. He had me print him off a list of what flavorings I had, and returned it to me a few days later with around 20 things checked off asking me to make him something with all of those ingredients. After a lengthy chat, I figured out the flavor profile he was after and talked him down closer to 10 ingredients.
Doug is also a hoarder. He keeps EVERYTHING. He could probably build a furnished house, a go cart, and possibly a small aircraft with the items he has accumulated over the years. He likes to talk about all of the "stuff" he has, which brought me to call this mixture "Doug's Stuff." Without further boring you with any more backstory, here is the recipe:
Flavor | % ---|--- TFA Apple Pie | 4% FA Fuji | 3% CAP Vanilla Custard (v2) | 3% FA Vienna Cream | 2% TFA Vanilla Swirl | 1% TFA Caramel | 2% TFA Brown Sugar | 1% FA Cinnamon Ceylon | 1.5% FA Joy | 1% FA Meringue | 0.5% TFA (Sucralose) Sweetener | 1%
Tasting Notes
-
CAP Vanilla Custard/TFA Vanilla Swirl/FA Vienna Cream- It was apparent Doug wanted creamy vanilla in his mix, as he had nearly everything checked off with the word "vanilla" or "cream" in it. I narrowed it down to these 3 to use as a sweet vanilla cream base. At these percentages, it sets up as a light, sweet, and airy cream for the rest of the ingredients to meld into.
-
TFA Apple Pie/FA Fuji- These 2 flavors go together very well with the Apple Pie bring a sweet doughy apple taste to the palette, while Fuji further enhances the apple note with it's dank juiciness.
-
FA Joy- Further enhances the dough sensation and also adds a slight fried cinnamon note to the recipe.
-
FA Cinnamon Ceylon/TFA Brown Sugar/FA Meringue- Together, these 3 ingredients create an amazing and almost "granular cinnamon-sugar sprinkled on top" sensation to the mix. It's subtle, but you know its there all the way through both the inhale and the exhale.
-
TFA Caramel- I feel the Caramel at 2% really helps bring the base together with the rest of the mix. It is thick and robust at 2%, yet it blends well with everything else in the recipe making it the perfect supporting flavor here.
-
TFA (Sucralose) Sweetener- This is probably optional, but the old man insisted that his mixture would need sweetener added to it.
I mixed this at 50/50 for the sake of the set-up Doug uses. The taste really pops at this level especially with a higher wattage set-up, yet I'm sure it could easily be tuned to 70 or 80 VG. Tastes great as a shake and vape, the sweetness mellows out a bit overnight, and the caramel taste really starts to jump out within 2-3 days. The 100mL I made is basically gone after some of my other co-workers tried it, so my steeping notes aren't developed past 1 week.
Feedback appreciated and thanks for reading!
Damn, this looks delicious. AND I actually have everything needed to make it as is. It's been a while since I've been able to say that.
Great flavour notes, and such a great back story. Big ups to you for helping a new vaper out and creating a recipe they hopefully enjoy.
I'll be mixing this up this weekend and will give some notes when I do.
I set the stopwatch to see how long it takes for my comment to get downvoted ;)
I cant provide any feedback on the recipe as Im brand new, (although it sure looks good!) but I liked the back story and the idea of how you managed to get him to quit smoking :) PS. 60 isn't really "an old man" to those who aren't in their 20's or 30's lol :)
Your Doug's Stuff story inspired me to give my girlfriend's mom a list of all my flavors and notes. Her family is hoping she'll finally get off the stinkies and have got her to at the very least agree try vaping instead for the week that they're all going on vacation together, since two of her grandkids are severely asthmatic. She's excited about having a hand in designing her own juice. Hopefully I won't screw this up!
So what would you say this juice is? Would you say it's a bakery apple pie?
It's so much more than an apple pie. It has a nice layer of caramel and some subtle creaminess too. Steeping is very important in getting all of the layers to come out.
Is that actually TFA branded "Sweetener" or is it another sucralose mix?
It is the TFA branded "Sweetener Flavor" which has sucralose in it.
Got it. For those not familiar, TFA Sweetener isn't JUST sucralose which is why a lot of people seem to have issues with sweeteners when they're trying to use plain sucralose 10% instead of TFA Sweetener.
TFA Sweetener is close to 1:1 PG and water, and also close to 1:1 Sucralose and Maltol (not Ethyl Maltol).
This is awesome, I'm going to mix it up. Do you know if the caramel is Caramel Original or just Caramel?
The bottle says "Caramel Flavor" and is in TFA glass bottles. It is not the DX if that's what you're asking.
There's Caramel Original and then Caramel. The biggest difference being that one is thicker and creamier (caramel original) and the other is more along the lines of like a hard-crack caramel. I assumed it's not the caramel original, and based on the bottle it sounds like that's the case and that's the one I went with.
So right off the bat, this is a damn tasty recipe. It's like a nice, thick, sweet, caramel/cinnamon apple. I'm missing a bit of crust aspect to bring it in to the realm of an apple pie but I'm ok with that. It's a little high on the flavorings/pg for my personal taste but I can see why the recipe is the way it is. This is really good brotherman, and I bet it works really well in a tank. I can see this working well as an ADV or also as a treat at the end of the day. I think cinnamons are really great for newer vapers that enjoy cinnamon as it will really help kick the cigarette craving. Congrats on a successful recipe =)
I demand Doug's flavor notes on r2k40
If you're talking about RY4, it's basically a tobacco with caramel and vanilla/marshmallow and maybe some graham cracker. Every cheap online company seems to have their own house RY4 blend, but the one he had was a bit lighter on the tobacco and caramel and heavier on the marshmallow and graham cracker. It literally smelled like a s'more when it got vaped, but it had a nice tobacco taste.
He actually got it here if you're really interested. Dave is a pretty cool guy if you shoot an email to customer service he replies and is very personable. I used to order from him when I first got into vaping. His gear was cheap, his juice was reasonable and I always got 10-30mL free with every order. The only reason I stopped ordering things from him is because the items I wanted were constantly out of stock. I see some of his prices have jumped up about 10-20% too.
