So my step father is inquiring about vaping but doesn't want random flavors..
He currently smokes about a pack a day, more if he is stressed from work (he's a booking agent/musician that is in a well known eagles tribute band)
But any who, I don't mix with nicotine myself but I'm willing to for him. What do I start him off with, just a 50/50 blend at 18mg? Does nicotine have a flavor at all? Would I need additives or not? He doesn't want flavor, just the kick/throat hit a cigarette delivers. (He knows it won't be exactly the same)
I have done a bit of looking around and the info on nicotine is crazy, buts it's mostly about vendors and storage/safety etc etc.
I don't care about those details, I know the basics, don't get it on your skin and oxygen & UV light destroys the nicotine. All I need to know is what mg level I should start him off with.. and if I need to use additives of any sort. Again the answer is probably simple but I'm not risking it when I've never touched the stuff.
I'm going to continue researching but I figured this is the best place to get an answer.
Thanks for your time.
Personally I would just buy a pre mixed base if you just want unflavored that way no mixing involved and at low nic should be fairly cheap. I'd try here. https://www.nudenicotine.com/product/3-36mgnicotinebase/
Well, I already keep approx 1L of pg&vg at hand so I don't wana spend more on a premix as I can do it myself for cheaper. (I buy my pg/vg straight from the pharmacy, Rexal)
But, I do need a nic source so thanks for the link, they'll be going in my price comparison category lol
Now im thinking this would be so much more simple to DIY with. Just drop in the flavoring and im done.
In the nic guide from the sidebar, vape clarity is mentioned, I noticed they're site is under maintenance due to relocating- are they still considered one of the better nic vendors?
I'd start at 18mg, 50 PG/50 VG. That should be enough of a throat hit. Nicotine does have a slight... something, it's not really a flavor, but it's obvious when a juice has nicotine vs. when it doesn't. VG has a very light sweetness to it but at 50/50 it shouldn't be too noticeable.
Heat also fucks up nicotine, so keep it in the dark below 75 degrees when storing it.
Oh, heat.. yeah good thing you mentioned that lol. So, in the fridge or freezer is safe as I've read, I take it this is a common storage place? I don't have to worry about it cause I live alone too. So no kids or pets to meddle with my stuff.
Hmm, I take it the taste it gives off isn't a bad taste right? I wouldn't want it to deter him from using it. I was thinking of trying to sneak some NET into his juice to see if he would like it, but I don't want get him riled up by deceiving him either..
It's tricky getting an old fashioned person off of cigarettes with vaping lol
Fridge is fine, freezer is better especially for long-term storage. Let it slowly come to room temperature before using it to mix.
It's not really a taste per se, it's hard to describe. Part of it is the throat hit, and part of it is that nicotine seems to add a particular sort of... body? to the juice. Maybe someone else can help me out with describing it, lol.
If you can get your hands on a sample of some NET without spending too much, maybe mix him small amount of juice with it, and a small amount with just PG and VG, and see which he likes better.
Hmm, well only way to find out if he likes it is to give him some samples. I'll probably make him a dozen or so 5ml testers of different nic levels and a higher or lower pg ratio to give him options. 60ml of flavorless juice cant be that expensive.
And, well theres a shop here in Sudbury crystalfog vapes and the owner is a mixologist (registered and all) so I was going to go see him and inquire if he does NET's. If not, I'll have to do some reasearch before making a purchase as I know nothing about NET's
At least for me nic feels almost like a tingling sensation on my tongue.
I wouldn't say all nic has no taste, I got some particularly vile nic from liquid barn when I just started that tasted like shit and was covering up the actual flavors, but their customer service was great and I ended up getting a refund.
It would certainly depend on what hardware he's gonna be using. Most customers that I setup with a kanger subtank or similar system start around 6mg these days. A nautilus or similar would be 12-18mg
I was thinking of starting him off with something like the joytech Aio or something similar to make things simple for him.
The aio looks nice but the battery could be a little small, 1500 mah, an 18650 is what, 2300? I think? So it would matter how much of a smoker he was. I started out on a 1300 mah ego with a clearo and I was not satisfied with the battery life at all. Just some food for thought.
Possibly try some NET or very light tobacco flavoring if unflavored doesn't interest him.
INW Dirty Neutral Base tastes like an ashtray to me, could appeal to a smoker.
Dirty neutral base.. sounds like a techno band lol
But yeah, I've thought of this. It's just hard to talk an old fashioned man into trying new things lol
Does he like minty gum? I go through stages where I just can't be bothered with juices and complex flavours and all that so I like to fall back on a small percentage of something like FW Extreme Ice. To me vaping that is just like chewing gum all day.
Another super simple one would be ~0.2-0.3% FA Honey. Slightly sweet, mild taste, I have 120mL made at all times if I need a break from flavors.
Are you sure he wouldnt prefer some tobacco flavours? There are quite a few out there, i dont know personally as i tended to stray away from tobacco flavours when i quit but i would imagine he would want something similar. I recommend if you are going 50/50 with any kind of subohm tank, dont go over 12mg. Its pretty harsh above that even for an ex smoker. I personally recommend the kanger subvod or kanger subvod mega, both pen style, 1 is a kanger toptank nano 19mm pen style 1300mah and the other is a kanger toptank mini 22mm pen style with a 2000mah battery
So he doesn't want flavor, eh? Totally understand that, but is this maybe because he thinks they are all fruity/custardy/etc? As a smoker, maybe the tobacco flavors would appeal to him and make the transition more familiar and enjoyable? Again, I know you mentioned he doesn't want flavor, just wondering if this is maybe based on a lack of knowledge about what's available. Because you're DIYing, you could make it as light or strong as you wanted.
And to your actual question.. if he's going to be using a tank and smokes a pack+ a day, people would probably recommend anywhere from 12-18% nic. As some other ppl have mentioned, vape sites that sell DIY stuff usually sell a "base" that's just PG/VG/Nic. Good luck to you guys!
Check what kind of nic your local store is selling. If not check with Danny at the Broke Vaper. He sells Nic Select and you can get a small bottle from him. Yes, our prices are way higher that US nic sells for. As you know from my story, I vape 18mg in my Endura T18 and sub ohm 3mg (when I haven screwed up!). If you start him off with somewhere around 18 he might be good. Us old folks tended to smoke the strong cigarettes lol. A friend of mine started vaping at 24mg and felt that's what he needed to quit smoking. Just got down to 18mg recently. Maybe just a touch of menthol? Or something? Otherwise he may want to get back to the smokes just for flavour. Vaping straight flavourless can get boring and might not do the trick. I didn't realize you don't vape with nic. Interesting :) EDIT: Danny has 30mls for 20 bucks. Get it in pg. And the 100mg stuff, makes it easiest to calculate. And will last longer if mixing at 18mg or so.
