Strawberry Rhubarb Pie -- Flavor notes, recipe, and a base
submitted over 9 years ago by CheebaSteebaFrugivore

Strawberry Rhubarb Pie

  • INW Rhubarb @ .5%
  • TFA Strawberry Ripe @ 3%
  • CAP Sweet Strawberry @ 2%
  • FA Strawberry @ 1%
  • FA Apple Pie @ 1%
  • FA Cookie @ 1%
  • INW Biscuit @ 1%
  • TFA Brown Sugar Extra @ .5%

Notes
Steep: 1 week

Right away, the tartness of the Rhubarb is quite overwhelming, so a steep really helps the Rhubarb calm down, and the crust of the pie come together.

Overall Profile - What you're left with after a steep is really nice refreshing, crisp, mixture of Strawberry and Rhubarb. I feel like one doesn't outshine the other which is nice. This is all laid inside a sweet flakey pie crust base.

Flavor Notes

INW Rhubarb: I'd never had Rhubarb before, so I had to pick one up to see if I even liked it before ordering this. Imagine a very tart, semi-sweet celery, with a sweetness almost reminiscent of strawberry (hence why Strawberry Rhubarb Pie is a popular dessert in some areas). INW did a really good job of nailing this flavor, it is damn near spot on to taking a bite out of a piece of Rhubarb. It's really strong though, so anything over .5-1% will easily take over a recipe.

Strawberries: I normally go for a different strawberry base but I figured this one would benefit the mix the best, and so far it seems right where I want it. The TFA Strawberry Ripe helps to provide a sweet strawberry foundation; CAP Sweet Strawberry is in here to boost the Strawberry flavor as well as providing some additional sweetness that is needed; FA Strawberry tops off the strawberry note and gives it a nice authentic strawberry flavor.

Crust: I took a piece of one of the best recipes out there, /u/BotBoy141's Awesome Apple Pie, to make up the crust. This is a really good base for a pie crust. The FA Apple Pie is a great foundation for a pie crust, since you get mostly the flakey crust of the pie with just a touch of bright apple fruitiness. INW Biscuit adds to the buttery-flakeyness of the pie crust. FA Cookie gives the crust a much needed bit of graininess and sweetness.

Brown Sugar: I feel like this is kind of the secret ingredient, and I got the idea from fresh03. What the Brown Sugar brings to the party is obviously sweetening up the whole mix, but it really lends itself well to sweeten that pie crust and bring a nice bakery sweetness to the pie filling.

Other

This is a first iteration that went surprisingly well. I'm sure I'll mess around with it in the future. Ideas are maybe a touch of Liquid Amber to accent the filling, different strawberries (getting INW Shisha Strawberry & TFA Strawberry in soon). That's about all I can think of right now.

If you try this out I'd be really excited to hear any feedback, positive or negative.

Woo, a strawberry recipe that isn't strawberries and cream! This looks pretty tasty. I just got Shisha Strawberry and Biscuit this week, so I might throw Rhubarb in my next flavor order and give this a try.

Haha, I hear ya. S&C Is great but gets real old real fast. If you like Rhubarb at all, that INW Rhubarb is on point, I can't imagine a flavoring company doing it better. I don't think it will be as versatile in different applications but I'd say it's a great addition a to a flavoring arsenal.

I've made it a point to not mix S&C just because it's kinda done to death at this point and I really don't think I could innovate on it at all. I do like rhubarb, though! Wasn't even aware there was a rhubarb extract from any manufacturer until you posted this recipe.

This Rhubarb Custard Bar looks like it would be pretty freakin fantastic as a vape though.

Looks delicious. I've got one similar to this. Their rhubarb is fantastic but I find it incredibly strong. At .25 percent I find it has a tendency to take over mixes.

Does it come out after steeping? I got mine yesterday and could barely taste it at 1%

It tones down a fair bit after a long steep. After about a month It retains a nice tartness with a lighter rhubarb flavor. I find it needs to be balanced depending on the types of flavors used, with bakery or heavy creams it needs a bit more than it does with just fruits.

Thanks for the breakdown!

For sure, it's way strong. It is actually pretty surprising how much it calms down after a steep though. Like, literally, at shake and vape stage ALL I could taste was rhubarb. I almost tossed it because I thought I would have to bring it to .25 or lower. A week in and the rhubarb is still the most forward flavor, but it's not overshadowing everything else; the strawberries are kind of on the same level and you can taste the crust in the background

I thought i'd have to toss one as well, but it steeped well. Needs a bit more work but here is my recipe.

Strawberry Rhubarb Tres Leches Cake

INW Rhubarb .5%

FA Strawberry 3%

FW Tres Leches 6%

INW biscuit .75%

FW Yellow cake 1%

INW Rasberry .25%

FA Fresh Cream 1%

TFA VBIC 2%

The rhubarb is very prominent still but much better than shake and vaped. The cream needs a bit more work. Might try adding some Fa liquid amber as well.

Very interesting! After tasting this post-steep I would like to try taking it in a creamy-cakey direction, this is some real great inspiration! I've got all those except tres leches; tres leches is one of my fav desserts -- how is FW's offering?

My shake-n-vape notes lol:

>4/6
Rhubarb is a bit on the strong side, will need to bring this down, prob .25 or .3. May need to up the crust aspects a bit, maybe even the brown sugar. Prob also the sberry, not getting much sberry. REally just rhubarb lol.

Im am way, way, way ahead of myself here but this recipe makes me think of something very similar that I was thinking of when I ordered my flavours, including INW Rhubarb. I was envisioning strawberries and rhubarb with either a large dollop of whipped cream on top or a strawberry and rhubarb pie. So thank you so much for this recipe! It gives me inspiration for when I finally start mixing. The Rhubarb flavour taste test I did yesterday made me think this flavour would need to be used sparingly, and I see that's exactly the case as you've stated. Thanks for all your notes and work!

Very awesome! I'm glad it's been helpful. Can't wait to see what kind of cool stuff you mix up!

I've been working on my own variation of Strawberry-Rhubarb Pie for a few weeks now, and have not thought of adding brown sugar to the mix. My variation is a cheesecake base, and can be found here. I'll definitely try your recipe after I come home from work, it looks delicious.

Right on, looks interesing! If I had Honey I'd give it a go, sadly, I do not =( How have you found the creamy/cheesecake aspects play with the rhubarb?

Cheesecake plays pretty well with rhubarb. As many have stated, INW Rhubarb is a pretty strong flavor... but very true to a real rhubarb flavor. Honey seems to tie the strawberry and rhubarb flavors together, and DX Sweet Cream helps bring out the notes of the cheesecake from behind the rhubarb. I strongly recommend FA Honey, it has a great floral honey flavor that adds so much to a fruity mix.

Very nice, ty for notes. Haha, I've heard so many horror stories of Honey that I've kind of stayed away from it. I think the only "honey" I have is FLV Milk & Honey. Just put the FA Honey on my wishlist =)

i mixed this up the otherday

TFA dragonfruit 2%

inawera melon 1%

capella sweet strawberry 1%

TFA strawberry ripe 1%

and after vaping it in a tank that i had previously vaped some

inawera melon - 1%

capellas double apple 1%

my buddy and I both thought it was a lot like the filling for a strawberry rhubarb pie - might be worth a shot trying something similar! hope it helps

Hmmm, very interesting indeed! Been looking at that INW Melon, how do you like it?

I absolutely love it! It's a really interesting melon i'm not entirely sure what kind of melon it's supposed to be like but it's awesome! have been vaping it daily for over a year now in various mixes lol

I might throw some graham cracker in there and swap caramel out for brown sugar. Maybe some cap vbic for a subtle light whipped topping flavor or vanilla swirl to blend the bakery notes together

I'm wicked late to this party, and only found this thread due to a Google search, but I'm absolutely giving this a try as one of my earlier attempts when I buy flavors this week or next.

If I were to want to add that ice cream flavor (just a tiny dash), what type of flavors would you suggest? I don't want anything really vanilla forward, but just enough to get that sensation of "I just had the best bite of pie ever!"

Thank you for giving back to this community. I have a feeling I'll be spending a lot of time here now.

Hmmm, it might be a little tough to layer some "a la mode" in with a pie in a juice but I would imagine either CAP Vanilla Bean Ice Cream or TFA Vanilla bean Ice Cream. CAP's offering is a bit more creamy where TFA's is a bit more eggy, or more like a frozen custard. I tend to prefer TFA's when shooting for an actual "ice cream". There's also been some good stuff floating around about Hangsen's ice creams, but I have no experience with them myself.

If you give it a try, I'd love some feedback!

I'll definitely give this a try. The idea of a vanilla flavor added to this reminds me of some juice a friend was kind enough to gift me. The cherry plus that very ice cream aftertaste really does some wonderful things.

I'm ordering this weekend, and will definitely keep you up to date on how it works out!
