Bad reactions from slightly raising VG% in my mix.
submitted over 9 years ago by KevinStoleyProud Sidebar Reader!

I've been making my own e liquid for awhile now. I usually vape 40pg/60vg 3mg.

Yesterday I decided to try 30pg/70vg along with lowering my nicotine to 1.5mg.

So far this morning I've been coughing a lot more when I vape and my lungs feel like when you have a cold and need to cough something up. Seems strange for only a 10% increase in VG.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is it to be expected, will it go away?

I legit have dry and cracking knuckles :(. I have never had dry hands before and I've only had it recently, which is odd since I've vaped for 2 years now.

What the other guy said. He was paid to lie about side effects of vaping and to promote their products.

Hes referencing this riptrippers video where Rip talks about some weird vaping side effects he had that were not possibly related to vaping.

I vape 50/50. Tried higher amounts of VG... 70% at first, got lung-bubbling and coughing up gunk. 60% was better but still caused congestion. At 50% the problem went away and has never come back (in more than a year). BTW, I tend to chain-vape @ 3mg/ml nicotine.

I've actually read a lot about people feeling heavy in their chest or getting phlegm buildup, correlating it to higher VG, but I've never experience this. I mix max VG lately and haven't noticed anything. I've went from 50/50 from my pen vape about a year and a half ago, to 60-80% when I got a subohm tank, and now sometimes as high as 90-95% if a recipe calls for a low percentage of flavor.

The only thing I notice is irritation when my coils get gunky. I change cotton and dry burn or just rebuild at least once every 2-3 days because of this.

I vaped 85%+ VG juices for 6+ years with no ill effects until a year ago*, when I noticed I was becoming short of breath after walking up a hill. I run, hike and walk everywhere, so it was weird and unpleasant.

It felt like I had a serious chest cold (heavy-lung feeling). My airways were congested, but I couldn’t really cough it out. It was different from the throat and nasal irritation associated with very high PG, and I knew I wasn’t sick.

I did a bit of internet research, then re-mixed my juice at 70vg/30pg and my breathing returned to normal within a day or two. When I experimented with a 10% increase, the respiratory side effects returned.

VG is extremely hygroscopic. I mix a lot of juice, so I have many bottles of 90% VG juice sitting around. The outsides of the bottles will get wet very quickly because any VG on the bottles from normal use will draw water from the air.

It was pulling all of that moisture out of my mouth and airways. The dehydration contributes to excess mucus and heavy-lung feeling because the gunk gets superthick, and it’s harder for the body to eliminate it.

I am fairly active and even though I drink a lot of water, cumulative dehydration from vaping 90VG and working out was way more extreme than I had expected & it snuck up on me.

  • I attribute the appearance of symptoms at that particular time to increased vapor as mods became more powerful, coil builds became more complex, and air flow became more generous. The changes were gradual and the effect was cumulative: my airways had to process more vapor, and the increased VG dehydrated me more.

Do you think it might be possible that you are coming down with something? 10% increase doesn't sound like it should make that big of a difference. Maybe try a 100% without flavoring to see how that feels and you can rule out VG as the culprit.

I don't think I'm coming down with anything, I feel totally fine despite the heavy lungs/phlegm in lungs feeling. It's possible, but I doubt that's it. I thought the same about the 10%, it's so little a change it doesn't seem like it would make any real difference.

Happened to me two weeks ago but opposite. I always make max VG but wanted to use my tank again. So I made 40/60 and BAM coughing and shit. Girlfriend blamed the Vaping (always does for the rare cough) and turned out I was just coming down with what every one else in my office had.

Feel better!

Yeah I'd say try dripping some straight VG onto you wick and vape it. See if it really is the VG

Sounds like you are getting a chest cold. It's going around where I'm at.

What are you vaping flavor wise? Irritation can occur from flavors like vanilla and cinnamon, which can increase over time.

Pg is harsher than vg, and dehydrated you faster. Maybe your body hasn't realized you changed things up, and is still compensating? I wouldn't put it past the human body, it's crazy.

I've mainly been vaping Mustard Milk recipe and a vanilla custard for a long time now. I've had no issues with either of those until today and yesterday was the first time I changed up my ratios in my recipe since I started mixing.

As for a cold, it's possible but I doubt it. I feel completely fine other than the feeling in my chest/lungs.

I get a similar reaction to higher levels of VG although my 'sensitivity' kicks in at anything above 50/50. :(

The obvious suggestion to rule out a cold is to switch back to 40/60 and see if the symptoms disappear over a few days.

I'm not sure if it actually happens or is just placebo but if I've been vaping a lot of diketone-heavy juice I feel after a while like I'm getting a lot of phlegm-y shit in my throat/lungs. A break of those types of juices for a couple of days seems to help.

If that's what's happening here it could just be coincidence that it aligned with your change in ratio and nic.

It'll probably just take a bit to get used to the "heavier" vape. I went up to 70vg a while ago, but don't remember if this happened, but I cough some when I hit someone else's vape with a higher vg.

Are you positive you didn't accidentally mix 70%pg instead of vg?

Yeah I'm positive I mixed it 70 VG / 30 PG

Are a mouth to lung hitter? You could just be coating you mouth a bit.

Yes, I do vape mouth to lung. What do you mean by coating my mouth?

The vapor can condense on the side of your mouth and lungs. By using a mouth to lung hit the vapor has more time to rest on the surrounding tissue. Like drinking a lot of milk.

That's my theory anyway. Something warm to drink can help, and as always water.

I personally have just come to terms with it.
