Alright, so after about a week of experimenting with some new flavours I received from the Gremlins, I think I got this recipe to a state of near perfection. Recipe and alterations below.
Drunken Pears
- FA Pear at 4%
- FA Fuji at 0.35%
- CAP Cinnamon Danish Swirl at 1.5%
- FA Meringue at 0.5%
- TFA Brown Sugar at 0.4%
- FA Torrone at 0.35%
- TFA Kentucky Bourbon at 2.25%
- TFA Vanilla Bean Ice Cream at 1%
- TFA Vanilla Swirl at 0.5%
- FA Joy at 0.2%
Flavour Notes
FA Pear/FA Fuji - this is what I was looking for in creating the pear note in this recipe. After an exorbitant amount of alterations on the initial FA Pear/TFA Juicy Peach combination, I found it just wasn't doing what I wanted. At low percentages, it wasn't allowing the pear notes to pop like I wanted, but at higher percentages, it popped the flavour, while adding a very unwanted harshness to the mix. I attempted to swap in FA Peach, and it alleviated the harshness, but seemed to overpower the flavour into a peach/pear realm, which is not what I wanted. Finally, on a whim, I tried testing FA Fuji. At 1.5%, it added far too much apple for my liking. At 1%, it was getting closer to simply accentuating the pears, but the aftertaste was still too apple-y. I settled at 0.35% because here, you get a nice crisp sweetness from the apples that really allows the pears to shine and taste very realistic, without any real apple flavour. Fuji is a great addition to any fruit recipes, and it works so beautifully in creating a pear flavour that shines.
CAP Cinnamon Danish Swirl - I left this alone in every other attempt because, well, at 1.5%, it is perfect. Adds a nice little bakery note to the recipe to give a full bodied flavour, without adding too much cinnamon or pastry notes. It really bridges the gap between the fruit, alcohol, and ice cream flavours to create one cohesive and enjoyable vape.
FA Meringue - initially I was using TFA Meringue, and while messing around with the flavour levels, I found the TFA Meringue was either not adding anything to mix, or adding too much. FA Meringue seems to add more of a creamy sugar mouthfeel that I enjoy much more.
TFA Brown Sugar/FA Torrone/TFA Kentucky Bourbon/FA Joy - these were my flavours for that bourbon brown sugar sauce that I use in the actual dessert recipe. I boosted the bourbon by 0.25% for this final recipe because at 2%, it was there, but not as much as I would have liked. At 2.5-3%, there was far too much of an alcohol taste that really created a disconnect between the flavours. 2.25% seemed like the sweet spot here. A nice punch of bourbon flavour, a VERY slight tickle in the throat that sort of emulates the feel of how the bourbon sauce tastes, and an overall warmness to the recipe. The use of brown sugar, Torrone, and Joy really complement the bourbon with the hints of sweetness, sugary mouthfeel, and slight bit of cinnamon.
TFA VBIC/TFA Vanilla Swirl - as I had anticipated in the previous recipe, 2% on the VBIC was still too high to stand up to the steeping. While the Vanilla Swirl seemed to calm it down a little bit, a few days of steeping still pushed that ice cream flavour too much. At 1%, it is a great note for a shake and vape, but it starts to push it's way into the mix (without taking over) after a few days.
Ratio/Steep time - 70VG/30PG. Shake and vape is still delicious. The fruits blend together perfectly after an overnight steep. The bourbon and brown sugar amplifies at about the same time as well, but that bourbon throat tickle mellows out. Finally, the ice cream and vanilla flavours really come out to play after about 2 days. Overall, I think this recipe tastes it's absolute best after 3 days, but again, it's still goddamn delicious straight away. EDIT - so I just wanted to add a few notes on steeping with this particular recipe because I was basing my steep notes on the v1 recipe with what I assumed would happen based on the changes. That being said, the three day steep time is definitely what this needs. Leading up to the three days, there's a slight harshness that I'm assuming is either coming from the Kentucky Bourbon or the Cinnamon Danish Swirl. It doesn't make this unvapeable as a shake and vape, but I don't want anyone to mix this and be upset with that harshness. After three days, that harshness is completely gone, and the pear notes really push to the front of the vape. All of the creaminess still sits in the background, while the bourbon and brown sugar flavours still shine on the exhale, just without that nasty little throat hit.
Substitutions and pairings - the initial recipe still works nicely. Instead of using FA Fuji, you can sub TFA Peach Juicy at 1% to push the pear note without getting TOO much of a harsh throat hit. To eliminate the throat hit, use FA Peach at about 1-1.5% depending on how much of a peach note you want. Anything over that will probably take over the pear flavour. If you don't have Kentucky Bourbon, I actually found that you get a similar flavour profile by pushing TFA Brown Sugar up to 1% and adding FA Caramel at about 1.5-2%. It is obviously not a perfect substitution, but it still adds a rich and dark sweetness to the mix. If you have any sort of oak flavouring, I would assume maybe a drop or two would get you even closer to that bourbon flavour. As for pairings, I found that this recipe really tastes great with any sort of dark beer like a stout or a porter. Also, even though it's more of a dessert vape, it tastes so fucking good with coffee.
EDIT: Time for a plug. I am posting this up on All The Flavors, and I highly recommend you get yourself a subscription. This app is much more streamlined and pretty than ELR or any other mixing forum out there, and the quality of the recipes on here is just top notch. Drunken Pears ATF Recipe.
After about 2 weeks of playing with this recipe, I think it's finally done, and I can't begin to express how proud I am of it. It's really my first truly successful and unique mix, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
Cheers!
Big thanks to /u/Vurve for being my first real beta tester of this recipe and hooking me up with some helpful notes in really honing in on the subtle changes needed in this final mix.
Also need to thank /u/tobraham for mixing this up with Nectarine instead of Peach. Although nectarine isn't the final choice I made, I would not have thought to throw Fuji in here if they didn't sub out the peach entirely.
Oh yeah, after steeping this over the weekend, I loved what turned out. Everything is perfectly balanced.
I do have to omit the juicy peach as well though.
Despite how much I love the flavor, it tears my lungs up. Even at 1% I was getting short of breath after vaping it a while. FA Fuji is probably a perfect compliment to the pear, but I may try Blood Orange as well to go a more juicy route.
I totally agree. Peach was just really fucking up the mix with that harshness. Fuji was exactly what I was looking for. Let me know what you find with using Blood Orange in there.
I also personally love that you're posting your revisions. It shows a real time glimpse into the tinkering process and how the recipe evolves as you find new flavor profiles, or see how different flavors interact.
Too many people are far to caring of only posting a perfect recipe.
In the real world, you're going to fail half a dozen times and this shows other people what you're doing rather than just saying "Hey, I tried this, it doesn't work"
I'm still loving the recipe (with nectarine)! Fuji is a great addition to any 'juicy' and 'sweet' tasting flavor that needs just a little kick in the pants to be more rounded. With a bit of steeping, the Bourbon has balanced out and isn't very harsh. The second batch I whipped up had .5% of FA Honey and .8% TPA Dragonfruit added. Being further inspired by TPA Pear, my chef brain went elsewhere with the recipe and I thought of my favorite pear dessert.... Carmelized Pears with Rum Raisin Mascarpone. Flavors have been ordered and a base recipe is being developed in the meantime. Damn, I love this sub. So many ideas, collaborations, inspirations, and fun times.
Been looking forward to a complex pear...will give it a go. Cheers :)
I had just made V1 yesterday, with some tweaks. It resembles V2 a lot! The same thing with banana split. My tweaks made it look more like your V2. Weird. In any case both are really nice, thanks for posting!
Glad you're enjoying it. And that is crazy. I guess I'm starting to get a handle on this whole DIY thing. The banana split recipe is still messing with me, because after a steep, it still all blends together way too much to really taste like anything in particular. It's not bad, by any means, but it's still not where it needs to be. Taking a little break from it and plan on revisiting it in a few days.
Yeah I didn't mention it, but I omitted the chocolate. That's one flavor that just never works for me.
/u/matthewkocanda I've seen you mention this recipe in numerous other posts, suggesting it was doing your head in a bit. I made this a few weeks ago and just cracked it open tonight, and after a few weeks of being in a bit of a mixing rut I can safely say this has rejuvenated and inspired me again! Good work, I don't know if it needs any more tweaking TBH!
Full disclosure: I used FE Pear instead of FA, and my CAP CDS is v2. I made mine 80/20 1.5mg. Luuurrvin it :-D Further disclosure: Mine has the TFA Juicy Peach @ 2%. I must have put this together before you changed your mind on that. Yes I am a little short of breath.
EDIT: crap typing, I am tired. EDIT2: More disclosure.
Wow thank you so much! I think I just might have overloaded my senses with it because I vaped it non stop for about a week trying to figure out what it was missing.
I've been out of TFA Kentucky Bourbon for about 2 weeks now, so I've been forced to take a break from it haha. Once I can place a new flavour order, I can give it a mix again and taste it with fresh senses.
I remember that once it hit the week steep mark, it definitely jumped into a realm of amazing flavour. I'm glad you're enjoying it! Thank you :)
My Lord I'm looking forward to mixing this. I made the v1 and vaped the entire 30ml in 2 days. I forgot to reply to you I think to tell you how good it was lol.
Hell yeah, I'm so glad you enjoyed it. V2 isn't too different from v1, but I think it's just a little more refined. It really rounds out a lot nicer after a few days, similar to the first attempt. I just think this version is better. Hope you think so as well :)
About a month later and i've finally mixed it up. As a huge fan of your first version, I can say that this one is incredible as well. Honestly, it's going to be in my rotation. Shake and vape is great and it only gets better from there. Truly an amazing juice and thank you for sharing it.
