I told my friend i was gonna start making my own juice and he said i would either kill myself from the nicotine, kill/ harm my friends using it, damage my lungs from inhaleing the nicotine (not even vapeing it) or burn myself some how from spilling it on me? (dont think its corrosive??) He thinks i need full arm length gloves, apron, safety goggles and a face mask. i guess it not a bad idea but if im just sitting at a desk, gloves and mabey some glasses should be fine right?
I understand that liquid nicotine is poisonous and it can even be consumed through your skin, but how big of an issue is it when your mixing to get a little bit on your hand? Is the concern more serious depending on (48mg vs 100mg)strength? how hard is it too put way to much nicotine in? how big of a concern is it that other stuff will get mixed in their by accident? What type of safety gear do you use? Is it even damageing to inhale the liquid nicotine if your not vaping it?
I'm a little chapped from this argument ahahah, but it does actually bring up some good questions so id wanna hear what you guys have to say.
Not the best day to post serious shit, if this in fact serious. But first off, yes, there's quite a big difference between 48mg-100mg/ml strength nic. You're more than doubling the strength with 100mg/ml, and that can definitely make a big difference when mixing if you put a little too much.
I have 100mg/ml VG based nic and I've noticed a difference. Because it's so thick, it's easy to for one drop to push you past the desired strength you wanted, and it can make the vape a little more harsh. But that isn't as much of a problem as the issue of skin contact.
While you wont necessarily die from getting a drop or two on your skin, you'll definitely experience a bit of nic sickness from it. If you notice yourself getting headaches, nausea, or anything like that, be sure to step away from vaping for an hour or so. Drink a lot of water as well. Nic sick won't kill you, but it's a bitch to deal with.
As my man /u/Vurve said, proper PPE when handling nic at any strength. Be careful and you should really only need some basic nitrile gloves, but yeah, if you're gettin wild or drunk mixing or just are overall sloppy, get some longer arm length gloves. Some sort of eye protection is also a must. Don't want that shit splashin into your eyes.
Better safe than sorry.... I intake a lot of Nic a day, and mix with 100mg. I've gotten some on my skin before and had no issues, but I had a major spill one time and during clean up needed to lay down for a bit.... This was while actually wearing gloves during mixing, and taking the gloves off after thinking anything wet was none nic (bottom of bottles on the desk, needled, etc). I was wrong. Got a fair amount on me that I thought was pure VG and kept cleaning up my mixing area and paper toweling things down. As soon as I realized it, I washed my hands and arms, took my shirt off, and laid down for a bit.
I know manage my area while mixing better, and still wear gloves. Most of the time I never get anything on my gloves, so they just go back into a ziplock bag for next time.
My main concern is the pets and my girlfriend. Everything is locked away and any nicotine in the fridge is in a bottle, then a ziplock bag, then a box sealed up and labeled "poison, do not touch". Also, if I ever have to clean up spilled nic, I place any paper towels used in a sealed bag before throwing it in the trash.
The lethal dosage of pure nicotine is probably between 500mg and 1g.
It's nowhere as dangerous as claimed by the medical research - in fact, the commonly held lethal dosage is something like the equivalent of 4 cigarettes back to back, which I assume many of us have done in the past.
Ive stopped mixing with gloves. I have been using 100mg but I just stepped down to 60mg.
I occasionally might get a trace on my hand but I dont really feel much from it...maybe a little buzz in my head. Most of our tolerances for nicotine are so high that it really isnt a problem. I simply wash my hands after.
The real annoying thing is getting PG and VG on your hand because that shit will get e v e r y w h e r e.
Yeah, same here. I think if you're a newbie maybe gloves are a good idea but I'm pretty comfortable handling my 100mg/ml bottles these days. I get a bit on my hands sometimes and just rinse it off and have no issues. But a mask, full arm gloves, etc. is just insanely overkill. Unless you plan on huffing it for an hour straight and then pouring it on your arm I think you're good.
And yes, FUCKING VG/PG MAN! I thought maybe I was an idiot but legit, it just.. jesus. I find traces of it all over my desk after I finish mixing and can never figure out how the hell it got there.
But anyways, /u/sendingucciplateau - if you're new to handling high strength nic I'd at least get some gloves until you're comfortable.
Regardless of what some people say, ALWAYS use gloves AND eye-protection.
Even if you are the best mixer and are 'super careful', it's not about the times you are careful, it's about the time something does not go as planned. A stray drop might give you a buzz or burn your skin (see chemical burns), but a stray drop in the eye is bad news, or tipping over the master bottle of nicotine all over the place.
It's definitely not "one drop is enough to kill you" strong like Dr. Oz suggests, but in my opinion, you should still treat it as such.
I always wear gloves whenever I touch my nic bottle. Even if I'm not opening it. Better safe than sorry. I like to think I'm pretty smart, but I make stupid mistakes. I'll be damned if I poison myself over a hobby.
Just treat it like a gun or knife. Don't be a jackass and you should be OK.
I vape at 3mg and just started DIY. I bought 12mg nicotine from http://www.ecigexpress.com just to be on the safe side to start. I figure the concentration isn't higher than juice I've handled in the past (when MTL vaping) so the safety factor isn't as much of an issue.
Proper lab hygiene is a must with liquid nic, as anything over a concentration of ~33mg/ml can be absorbed transdermally, and much lower concentrations can be absorbed through mucous membranes like yr eyeballs.
Most folks suggest storing nic in the freezer to prolong its shelf life and avoid that pepper note, but there are some things you should be aware of doing so. One, triple seal and clearly label as poison. Two, freezer-cold nic is more viscous than at room temp, which means that it is easier to over-shoot your desired concentration. This problem is exacerbated by high-concentration nic. Third--and this is something I've not seen discussed--nicotine volatalizes more readily as the liquid warms up, so while you may have adequate ventilation for cold nic juice an open bottle of concentrate will produce more and more poisonous vapors as it comes up to temp.
No such thing in this world as safe, so be careful.
I get my 100mg/ml nic on my fingers and hands all the time and it's never made me sick or burned or anything.
I realize I may be stupid for this, but I'm just saying that I have not seen or felt any side effects or died yet.
I am not suggesting anyone do as I do though, obviously use gloves and other protection.
