For months the mod team have gotten fairly overwhelmed with requests for tighter control of content on this sub. The top three complaints: recipes outside the monthly thread, clone requests, and posts that could be easily answered with sidebar & search.
After some mod discussion, it was decided that we would have to institute stricter rules, but that none of us really had the time for proper policing. We approached /u/abdada a few weeks ago about helping us mod, and he agreed.
Pursuant to this new strategy, the following rules will take effect immediately:
- Recipe posts outside the monthly thread will be removed and a 3-month ban on posting will be imposed. It doesn't matter if you write a novella describing your process and flavor notes: NO recipe only posts.
- Clone requests, no matter how nicely worded, outside the monthly thread, will be deleted and 12-month ban imposed.
- Failure to use search / sidebar will result in a 1-month ban.
In addition, since so many troublesome posts come from mobile-only users, we are working to disable mobile access to the sub entirely. If you don't have a desktop PC you will not be able to access this sub.
Welcome aboard, AB!
EDIT In 1971, Yes released the classic album Fragile. One noteworthy aspect of this album was that each band member had a solo composition. Guitarist Steve Howe's contribution was an instrumental. If you remove a vowel in that track's title, you may get some insight as to what is going on here. You should be able to answer this without teh Googlez; if not, you need to listen to more Yes.
Is removing mobile access entirely really the best course of action? I understand that mobile uses are some of the most troublesome, but surely removing mobile access entirely is unnecessary. I think you'll see a huge drop in traffic and subscribers if you do go this route.
I totally agree. Myself and many of my friends primarily visit this sub on mobile while at work, class, etc. I think you may risk losing a lot of prevalent users in this sub by cutting out mobile access.
too risky that a stranger who's never read the sidebar accidentally looks at your phone and reads vital DIY information. a desktop in a private office with the blinds closed should be the only accessible form. for the greater good
As a redditor who only uses mobile this is ridiculous. But tbh that doesn't really cover my biggest issues. You're going to ban people who may not know about the rules. I think the new rule should be tell people bitching to take the stick out their ass. This thread is probably the least posted too out of my whole front page
This is supposed to be a community and it seems this sub is becoming an elitist circle jerk. Seriously. If these rules really go through I hope someone makes a rival thread because I don't support 12 month bans that are at least on topic with the sub. O no another clone request. Fucking skip over it and continue. It's a fucking sub about DIY ejuice. It's not like they are talking politics. I do not support the fascist regime that's happening.
They should make this a private group only if this is how they feel.
I think it's rather healthy for the sub. There's been many known overlords who enslaved the populous to create beautiful things, such as the great Pyramids.
Tell that to the Jewish slaves. That metaphor doesn't help. The fact is you're isolating your circle from everyone else. At the end of the day me sharing how I finally got a recipe where plum shines and is actually yummy isn't hurting anyone and a ban is ridiculous. It's a sub not a country. It is only bothering some people. And If your bothered by the fact I am excited about my first recipe and that's not content enough for you , your probably the type who thinks people shouldn't make giant birth announcements since some women can't have children. .
A sub without order and discipline is chaotic and unworthy of the esteemed members of the inner circle. We must all pledge our fealty to the great minds that make this place as useful as it is. Sacrifices are always needed in any great endeavor, as I have stated before. Your mettle will be tested for sure, but the few that survive the trials and tribulations will result in the greater good for the community. No one should go through life untested in a field he/she is passionate about. I'm sure you can understand.
I actually posted a clone request in the monthly clone thread and no one even looked at it.
They were too busy answering the other clone requests that already have been requested every month for 2 years. (BTW there's sidebar links to the collections of recipes.)
I don't understand why like any other forum the mods can't just post back to someone who posts in the wrong place with a simple link to the correct place to post and close/lock the thread. Seems to work for every other forum I've ever been to.
Just a suggestion/opinion, and yes I know opinions are like assholes, everyone has one, and they ALL stink!
Walk with me in Hell.
>In addition, since so many troublesome posts come from mobile-only users, we are working to disable mobile access to the sub entirely. If you don't have a desktop PC you will not be able to access this sub.
In other news, /u/abdada realizes he really only accesses this sub from mobile, preemptively perma-bans self.
Actually I only access reddit using the Amazon Alexa skill now.
"Alexa, read me new posts on DIY ejuice"
"Alexa, reply with standard shitcomment about the sidebar"
"Alexa, change login to my other account /u/tranceinate"
"Alexa, download all images from /r/DIYgonewild"
>/r/DIYgonewild
I was ready to be disappointed, then I was pleasantly surprised, then I was disappointed again.
Wait....you're me?..
I'm...you?..

So does this also apply to my Shurb posts? Since they're not really a recipe post, more of a journal of me spiraling in to clinical psychosis.
Bravo!

I'm still waiting to hear back from you if we can switch AllTheFlavors to only allowing individual aroma volatiles for recipe mixing instead of those amateur pre-mixed concentrates.
This isn't kindergarten anymore, and more people want to mix juice that tastes like foot, dentist's office and urine.
I definitely agree that by limiting ourselves to commercially available combinations, we could hardly have "all the flavors."
Are your glycerine reactor plans coming together? It's time to take this hobby truly DIY.
I find all you vegan idiots annoying, I make my glycerin with pork belly. Plus the remaining tallow in the bathtub makes my skin extra smooth.
Hmm guess I'm fucked. Mostly on the go, so mobile is a must for me. It's been good boys.
Chrome mobile app, Menu -> Request desktop site.
Safari has the feature too. I just like chrome better than safari.
I'm a bot, bleep, bloop. Someone has linked to this thread from another place on reddit:
- [/r/electronic_cigarette] DIY ejuice mods are losing it. Cutting off mobile and 12 month bans for posting recipes as posts instead of on monthly thread. Community!
^(If you follow any of the above links, please respect the rules of reddit and don't vote in the other threads.) ^(Info ^/ ^Contact)
Congratulations to /u/abdada I'm not surprised. I know you will be a good addition to the mod team.
While the mods are keeping a close eye on this thread, I would like to ask a question about one the changes:
> we are working to disable mobile access to the sub entirely
Perhaps only disable posting while mobile. I still like to read and post small snippets in threads on my phone (like right now). I think removing all access to the sub via mobile might be a bad idea, however not allowing posting via a phone might be a good idea.
I use an iPad only. It's what I have. It's been fun. Bye all.
Honestly I can see why some would want this, but as someone who is about to get into DIY no I'm afraid of asking or posting anything, anywhere on this sub because I'm afraid I'll get banned.
I feel that removing mobile access is not the greatest of decisions. I for one use my phone and tablet both when mixing. I just don't have the room for my desktop in my work station. If this is seriously the course of action to be taken, I believe I will be unsubscribing from this sub reddit.
i completely agree with the clone request issue. but the recipe posts? that would make the monthly thread very cumbersome and hard to navigate wouldnt it? also i do most of my reading during my down time with my phone and ur trying to make that impossible why. why dont u make it so that one cannot post a new thread on mobile. lemme guess thats not an option so its better to just remove the function entirely. nicee... and also the thing about using the search bar. those decisions on bans are gonna come down to alot of judgement(hopefully) and its gonna turn into a matter of opinion alot of the time. like what if i post a question that has been answered but a sufficient answer was not given so i word the question more properly, or if i post a question that has been answered but i want up to date answers. or think of this. i ask a question to which the answer is located in a completely unrelated thread now im getting banned for not searching my heart out for that answer. now im sure there is gonna be sum discrepency involved on these "outlier" issues ive pointex out but do u see how very ambigous this gets. hopefully the mods are very conservitve with the banning and only save it for the incompetant fools that are clearly making mistakes without any regard.
I agree that clone requests and non-researched questions do not belong in new threads, but recipes with ample notes very much so belong in new threads, IMHO. It gets to the point where I am asking myself what DOES get posted. What do we, as DIY'ers, want to post that deserves a new thread. I have never once seen somebody complain about a recipe being posted containing thorough notes and concepts explained. In fact, as it being the type of posts that I make personally, I usually get nothing but praise and gratitude, even if it is a clone recipe.
The reason people put recipes on a new thread with notes is because they think the recipe deserves it, and the community deserves the knowledge that we have compounded into it.
If I am forced to put my recipes in the monthly thread, I no longer feel the pressure to provide notes and in-depth explanations, and probably won't provide them.
Congratulations /u/Abdada! On this momentous day I'd like to share this photo of the newest gestapo general at the celebration party. Yeah bro!
Where can I buy the abdaba mod? How many watts is it? Does it have TC?
