New feature - What can I mix? What can I *almost* mix?
submitted over 9 years ago by queuetueAllTheFlavors Creator/Admin

If you create a free account and set up your stash on All The Flavors, you can find all the (public) recipes that you can make.

But now, you can know what you could almost make - like, if you had one more flavor, or two more flavors?

  • Sign in, go to the flavors page and find the flavors you have.
  • Click the little checkbox next to each one, and it'll remember you have it.
  • Once you're done, hit the menu and click "what can I make?"

That page will let you see recipes with your flavors, or allow you to add a plus one, two, three or four.

Once you have a recipe you want to try, click on it. You'll see what flavors you need to make it work. You could even choose to copy it and try a version with the flavors you do have.

The interface is a little rough, but I wanted to get this feature out there and see what people thought of it.

I know this has limited usability right now, because there just aren't enough public recipes to really give you much selection. But there are more coming, from some of the big names here on /r/DIY_eJuice .

Two more big features were released today, but I'll hold off on announcing those. Some of the guys in here will be pretty excited if they discover them on their own, though.

You're doing such great things. I just wanted to thank you

Awesome!

I love that the software really requires registering and paying. I feel it gives the posted recipes a bit more value, and I also think it'll help reduce gaming the review system whenever that happens.

How often does your cron job run to update things?

  • I rebuild flavor stats every 3 hours.
  • I Check subscription expiration every 2 hours.
  • I update 25 stock items from each vendor every 45 minutes (oldest first)
  • I refresh all of the stock data once per day.

All of the "what can I make" data is actually calculated live, although I may have to push that into cache eventually.

Caching for sure -- when I was working on my own "what can I make" system, I definitely beat up my MySQL server just running my own tests lol. But it's an exciting feature!

Thanks for the update -- can't wait to find the hidden easter eggs.

It's a very rough one - especially if there are lots of flavors and recipes ;P It takes a lot of optimization!

One of my business partners tried to go pro with his Android app and he said it won't take Google Wallet, is that true?

by queuetueover 9 years agoAllTheFlavors Creator/Admin

Google has rules for in-app subscriptions and one of them is that you can't sign up for a subscription without a form of payment that fits specific criteria - namely, a card they can whack indefinitely. Since they can't guarantee a wallet will have any cash in it next month, they won't accept it.

What I think he can do is sign up at /go_pro on the website; stripe should should accept a "google wallet credit card" - and it will act exactly like the in-app purchase (web subscriptions are valid for web and app, just like in-app subscriptions are valid for app and web.)

Seems like you've made a friend for life /u/queuetue Don't worry most of us appreciate the work you're doing and if eventually it makes you a little cash then I'd say you fully deserve it.

Yeah, I have to give up on the inherent desire to defend myself. I'm not going to get anywhere and eventually, it just makes me look like I'm wallowing in the mud with him. Thanks for the support.

Very nice feature! I can only imagine the processing that your db will want to hog so it may be reasonable to limit queries to like 2 searches every x amount of time to prevent intended or unintended abuse.

I had a similar db in the past that can detect missing variables from a system developed and it was a nightmare when we allowed unlimited queries during peak hours

by queuetueover 9 years agoAllTheFlavors Creator/Admin

The system already does rate limiting above specific thresholds, but we're nowhere near capacity yet. I'm guessing I could handle 20x the traffic I'm seeing from this post before I'd step up to a larger instance.

Gotta say i did set up a profile and started to put in what i got... Used it for a flavor already... Nice job mang.. Keep up the good work

Been trying this off and on. Then I needed to edit a recipe. "You need a premium account to do this".

You bastard. I hope you enjoy that $15.

No regrets.

4 points

by queuetueover 9 years agoAllTheFlavors Creator/Admin

You shouldn't have needed a premium account to edit a recipe (only to add a new one beyond the free two.)

Was that on android or web? Seems like I may be abusing the free users from a few bugs reported today.

First and foremost, thank you for all of the hard work that you have put into this incredible resource. I became a "Pro Subscriber" last week and have really enjoyed using your app. It definitely makes things easier and faster as is, and there is obviously a lot more potential. Please don't let the poor attitudes or negative feedback of others discourage you from this project (YOUR BUSINESS). I was wondering how one would find out some more information about the scale you've designed to integrate with this software? Thanks again!

Bug me about that over at /r/AllTheFlavors - it's definitely fallen by the wayside, development-wise, and I owe y'all an update.

Great app! Thanks for your effort. Is it going to be the option of introducing youself the specific gravities for each flavor? Haven't seen it, but don't have the pro version yet, maybe is in there?

by queuetueover 9 years agoAllTheFlavors Creator/Admin

Both web and the android app have this ability, even though I strongly recommend against it.

2 points

by queuetueover 9 years agoAllTheFlavors Creator/Admin

Oh, actually, the web has the ability to store densities, but does not yet have the ability to use them when mixing. The android app has both.

2 points

by Graveyvapesover 9 years ago

Hey thanks for that. Btw I downloaded the app to see how it is a few days ago just on a free account. Made two recipes, which I think you guys had a limit on, when I removed/deleted both and tried to make a new recipe the app didn't let me because I had used up my recipe limit? Not sure if it was a bug.

Sounds like it is a bug, I'll try to fix it in the next release.

I really like this feature and I went ahead and tried a month of pro because this seems like this has the potential to be a pretty slick website.

However, I am experiencing some disappointment on the mobile side. One of the reasons I bought pro was so I could sync all the flavors I added on the website but I now realize that's kind of useless and doesn't add much beyond inventory tracking--unless I'm missing something.

I can't view any shared recipes in the app and even the mobile version of the website feels limited and doesn't even allow me to search recipes or include any of the new features found in the desktop version of the site.

I realize everything is still in development and please don't take this as harsh criticism as I know developing something of this magnitude across multiple platforms is no small task. But please please don't forget the mobile side in terms of functionality. It was the main draw for me before I realized how limited it appears in its current state.

1 points

by queuetueover 9 years agoAllTheFlavors Creator/Admin

Mobile got about two months of solid work, and now its the web's turn. I swear I'll turn back towards mobile before too long.

1 points

by muchoDaeneroover 9 years ago

Fair enough--haven't been keeping up with the development of this site, actually this post was my first time seeing it. You're definitely on to something here, keep up the good work!

1 points

by piggymonsterover 9 years ago

I signed up last night for the same reason, I do everything on my phone (kids pissed me off so WiFi went off for a long time). Please, please keep up with the mobile. So far, it's great except the time spent having to go back through every flavor and every recipe to re-input...but meh, small investment.

1 points

by queuetueover 9 years agoAllTheFlavors Creator/Admin

Re-input what? The web and mobile should sync all of your recipes.

1 points

by queuetueover 9 years agoAllTheFlavors Creator/Admin

Re-reading this, and I don't think I understand what's going on.

Recipes created on the web should be in your android app, you just have to sync it.

Shared recipes won't be in the app, because they belong to other people. You can "copy" or "export" one to make it "yours." Then it will sync with the app.

Also, the "desktop" and "mobile" web versions are the same website - anything you can do in one, you should be able to do in the other.

2 points

by muchoDaeneroover 9 years ago

Ah, I didn't know about the "copy" button in conjunction with sync to get a shared recipe on the app. Maybe kind of an extra step IMO, I'd rather have an option to view shared recipes on the app as well as this new feature eventually (especially as we all share recipes and the list grows etc).

As for the website, the mobile version seems to have a lot fewer options under "My Info" than it does on the desktop version. This isn't much of an issue now as the shared recipe list is small enough that it isn't that hard to find a recipe that you saw earlier on the desktop version under "What can I make" etc.

All in all it just kind of feels like, and this is still a very initial reaction to the site/app as a whole, but it feels like I have to move back and forth a lot to get what I want done--perhaps this will change I get to know the app/site workflow better. Again, this is a pretty minor gripe and as whole I really like it, just kind of a report on what I expected vs what it currently is.

by queuetueover 9 years agoAllTheFlavors Creator/Admin

In the beginning, there wasn't any web tool, and the app was standalone. Then came basic syncing, and from that grew the web app.

The website is a testbed for features, because I can make changes and add features in minutes, not the day of coding, compiling, testing, signing, uploading etc of the android app, followed by waiting for you all to download it. The web version moves much faster - deploy and done - so features have been appearing there quickly.

Some of those features will appear in the app, but others may not ever - on the web, I have as many supercomputers as I ask Google for, and on the mobile app, I have just the little processor in the device. On the web, I have infinite lightning fast storage, on the app, I have a tiny bit of mostly unindexed data. Storing potentially thousands of shared recipes you won't ever use on your device doesn't make a lot of sense, when you can just find and choose them online.

So, until the android app becomes a hybrid online-offline tool, it will always be a bit of a satellite to the web app, which will likely always have more features.

Your point to developing a real workflow is a good one, and I'd love to hear more about what that experience could be like for you. To date, the apps (both web and android) have grown organically, and to go forward, we (me and my community) should put some plans in place to direct were we go next.

Head on over to /r/AllTheFlavors to jump in on that planning.

I've been slowly loading my recipes on to ELR from old school notebooks and my tablet, but I'll start cross posting there to get you some more public stuff. I never put anything I don't want to make public online anyways.

I misinterpreted:

I thought you input your flavours currently on hand and it'll display what recipes you can currently make / with some that are only missing 1,2,x flavour

I recently started using this so I don't have to type things into a calculator over and over. I also like the batch feature and how easy it is to add owned flavors.. I was wondering if you plan on adding natures flavors/best flavors/got vaping flavors (yes that's what they're calling the 2nd sister company)

Great this is what i was looking for. I did ask on reddit for a website like this and i got downvotes. But i did not ask what i can mix i did ask for a website that has this build in.

When i go to for example cap i only see about 20 recipes. Are there only that many recipes?

Unfortunately the app is not available in Belgium from the play store. I'm going to assume that has to do with the recently adopted insanely strict TPD. I just hope this won't effect the whole EU as of May.

1 points

by queuetueover 9 years agoAllTheFlavors Creator/Admin

Unfortunately, this is up to me currently. Since I don't have translations, I'm trying to limit it's release to places that are predominately english, but I have been persuaded to turn on other countries in the recent past.

1 points

by vasco_over 9 years ago

That's odd. My phone is set in English, all my apps are in English. Pretty much every person in Western Europe (bar the French I guess) has a reasonable knowledge of the English language. Of course it's your call. But until then I guess I'll have to stick to a virtual machine (love your app btw).

I'll admit to having a New Hampshire native's view of Europe, linguistically. I've opened up Belgium, and if anyone gets mad, I'll tell them to contact you. :)

Just downloaded :).

I have been using PlanetOfTheVapes calc for years now, but it lacks the option to have more than 7 flavours.

Yours seems to have MUCH more toys! Am I right in thinking that if I get PRO and put all my flavours in, it will browse a database of the top guys on here's flavours and let me know what ones I can mix / almost mix? If so, that would be awesome. I love making new flavours, but some peoples stuff on here is amazing!

1 points

by queuetueover 9 years agoAllTheFlavors Creator/Admin

Pro not required. You can do that for free - on the website. This functionality has not made it into the android app yet.

1 points

by ButteringToastover 9 years ago

Thanks mate. I will put all the flavours on my phone and then I assume that it will sync with my web account too?

Looks like the two recipe limit will mean you will get your couple of British Pounds anyway!

1 points

by queuetueover 9 years agoAllTheFlavors Creator/Admin

No syncing if you're not pro. If you are pro, no need to enter any flavors, they will all sync automatically. Just mark them as "in your stash" and you're good. I even just added Wicked for you. :)

1 points

by Cleanthrowaway21over 9 years ago

I don't have a what can I make option anywhere on the app. Maybe I'm doing something wrong?

Also on the web version, on mobile, flavors only like ones that start with "a" and you can't see anything more than that.

1 points

by queuetueover 9 years agoAllTheFlavors Creator/Admin

It's a web-only feature, the mobile app doesn't have access to everyone else's recipes.

Your second issue, can you ask it again in a clearer way? I'm not sure what you're reporting.

1 points

by Cleanthrowaway21over 9 years ago

I'm attempting to select all my flavors but the list of flavors ends here with no option for a next page to see the rest of the flavors.

1 points

by queuetueover 9 years agoAllTheFlavors Creator/Admin

That's a search page. Just type something into the bar at the top.

This calc isn't even listed in the almighty sidebar but yet it seems like this whole subreddit is supporting it...

Why do we hate on shitposts so much here but allow this guy to use this sub as a personal advertisement for his business?

9 points

by queuetueover 9 years agoAllTheFlavors Creator/Admin

Well, possibly because this guy is trying to build features that a large portion of the community have been asking for for a considerable time, while listening and working directly with about 40 of the individuals who keep this sub running?

I think this is my first post about the site on this sub, even though I asked for permission from the mods about a month ago. But if it makes you feel better, hey /u/skiddlzninja, can I request a slot in the sidebar? Mr Planet would like me to be there.

PS, Sunshine, if you think I'm making a profit on this, you might be completely out of your mind. :) If I break even year one, I'll be pretty surprised.

> Pretty contradicting isn't it?

Not to me. There's a difference between expecting profit and finding a way to fund something. Will I accept profit if it appears? Sure! But if I was looking to make a buck this wouldn't be how I'd go about it.
