OK new mixers, this is your thread to ask any questions you want of the DIY eJuice community. All posts are allowed, but we still encourage you to use the sidebar and search features before asking any questions.
- Placing your first DIY order and want to make sure you have all you need?
- Not sure about how to mix your first bottle?
- Want to get started but aren't sure how?
- Any other questions? ... then this is the thread for you. FWIW, the answers to the first three questions will eventually be found in the wiki (still in development); link at the top of the page.
Ask away!
Ask anything? Ok, here goes. So what's with these mods? That skiddlz asshat who thinks he's holier than thou, and gods gift to mixing. While I'm at it, that fucking Wayne dude who made one mediocre juice. What about that Dada guy, who thinks I should read the sidebar... You can downvote me all you want (assholes), but just know that I'm fucking joking, and I missed your dumb asses.
How about this /u/dumpy_lutist guy that steals our hearts then abandons us for months, not even tuning in to the live podcast?
should I just dump failures? I don't think I'll ever actually vape this mediocre shit, but I remember all the times I've ran out of juice in the past and these would have been a blessing then.
I don't really know anyone to give it away to, either.
Put it in a box somewhere, labeled. I'll revisit them occasionally to see if some alright juices got better with a LONG steep. Not to mention there's always that one friend that will vape anything, and these juices are great for that person.
I keep and blend failures of the same profile. Then ultimately they have their own large bottle(236ml). For instance I'm working on the perfect caramel and the perfect custard. My long list of failures has netted me 8oz of "Bastard Custard" and about 6oz of "Cut Throat Caramel". Perfectly vapable just less than perfect.
I say dump them.
I used to keep them, hoping that they might be OK after a long steep. But then I figured even if they were acceptable after a long steep I'd probably never remake it when there's plenty of recipes out there that would be better faster.
As for when it comes to running out of juice - it's worth having a simple shake and vape recipe on hand. My go to is 3% FW Extreme Ice. Single ingredient and I can whip up 100mL of it in about 5 minutes.
Let's say a recipe calls for 75%VG and 25%PG. Now I want to change the ratio to 50:50 or 70PG 30VG. Would I be over flavouring if I use the same percentage of concentrate as in the initial recipe?
Nope. PG just allows some flavors to come through better, and doesn't need as long of a steep. The smaller volatiles generally do better with some PG added to the mix, while the larger ones such as creams are better with the naturally sweet VG.
Let's say I wanna mix two flavors together, and the recommended dosage for both of them is 10%. Should I use 5% of each for a combinded 10% or 10% of each? Or do I completly disregard recommendations and try to figure out the best dosages for combinations myself?
(Just started with the whole DIY thing, so combining things 50/50 seems like a good place to start until I get the hang of it.. don't want to blindly follow other people's recipes all the time)
Maybe. Sometimes one flavour will overpower the other, sometimes one will enhance the other, sometimes you'll just be straight over flavouring, sometimes it will work.
I understand not wanting to blindy follow other's recipes always but it's a good way to start until you get a feel for ingredients. At the very least keep a notebook of recipes you see that interest you so you've got a reference of how other mixers use ingredients.
So basically, trial and error, okay.
I do keep a notebook (more like a wild collection of bookmarks.. ahem..) and for now, whenever I have an idea, I try and find similar recipes to see what proportions other mixers would use. But at one point I wanted to do a simple two-flavor mix and I noticed I didn't even know where to start. And for some reason I was hoping there would be a simple one-fits-all answer to this..
Could have known there was none, so sorry for the maybe stupid question and thanks for answering it anyway!
Ha, my "notebook" is similar, an Evernote note with a bunch of copy-paste and links.
If you want a really rough starting point for a two ingredient recipe I'd go with 50-75% of what you'd normally use as a single flavour.
It really is trial and error though, IMO the best way is to mix some shit up and see what happens. I kind of expect that to get something semi-decent it's going to take a few tries at a recipe. So that initial mix isn't that important and I'm only mixing up 10-15mL to see what I need to do next.
I will answer by saying ALWAYS start low. How low depends on the manufacturer and flavor. Search here and ELR for recommended %.
Having said that, I will say to get the best results, always try each flavor standalone, at varying %. As you do this, you should really start to get a feel for what would pair well together.
So trial and error and learning by doing!
I actually was looking on ELR for recommendations for those flavors that had no recommendation from the manufacturer (and also for those who had, just to be sure) but I wasn't sure about what to do when combining two flavors.. do I need more, less, the same amount? As I said below, was hoping for an easy answer, but trial and error it is!
"There is no easy answer"
I'm fond of saying "mixing is easy, but it's not simple". It truly does take a ton of trial and error, and not a small amount of patience. But it pays off by letting me tweak something to my tastes.
Any particular flavors you need recommendations on?
-
Storing VG/PG. I bought 1 gallon quantities of them, and I dispense them into mason jars so I don't have to keep opening the big jugs. How clean should I be when mixing? I made the mistake of wiping my syringe with iso-alcohol beforehand and not letting it dry, that ruined a whole batch.
-
Are there any cardinal "must buy" flavors one should have on stock that are used in most recipes? I already have a strawberry, apple, cherry and a few others. I see a lot of lemon, lime, vanilla and other custard types to make a creamy base.
-
How often do I have to end up changing my coils on my vape? I have a TFV4 running 80 watts, the coils last me probably 150-250ml of 75\25 juice before I start getting bad aftertastes and such. I haven't moved onto rebuildables yet. Any tips?
Thanks guys
-
Buy condiment bottles, or a small bottle of VG if you mix buy volume. Store bulk in their gallons, fill the samller bottles as you need.
-
First order flavors in the sidebar. They are all very commonly used.
-
Depends on what flavors you use, and how often you use them.
If you're making you're own e liquid, I recommend hopping on to the RDA train. You'll be able to taste your juices better
Let alone the outrageous prices of premade coils.
Have all my stuff coming in and getting ready to start. First thing will be tasting/testing flavours of course. I plan to mix each with a little vg(or vg/pg mixed) and test. I was told a bridgeless atomizer would do the trick for testing flavours (and juices). I don't build. I vape with a Crown (and also and Endura T18). The atomizer I was told to get (in Canada, a Bauway) is out of stock and doesn't seem to be restocking. So Im in the US and thought I would buy one (some) while here. I read a bunch of threads and reviews. But now Im confused. "unsealed bottom connection", "sealed center post" "drip shield" etc. Then there are warnings about what voltage and not burning batteries. I have looked at ones from Avid Vaper, Empire Mods, Kidney Puncher. Could someone please help point me in the right direction as to what type I really need in order to test flavours and juices. Is a drip shield necessary etc? The only think I seem to know now is I need a 510 :)
TLDR: Don't drip, don't build, need the right type of atomizer for testing. Thanks!!
Buy a tobh, plume veil, royal hunter, or tugboat. These are all simple to build on and work well for flavor. I don't understand any of the shit people suggested to you. Just buy an RDA and build on it, someone was trying too hard to sound like they were an expert. Buy a cheap, simple RDA or two, get some 26 gauge kanthal, some cotton(I prefer cotton bacon V2), and a $5 set of stanley screwdrivers from walmart(the yellow ones).
I honestly didn't want to start building and worrying about resistance and ohms and such. It just seemed overwhelming along with starting to mix. I figured the bridgeless atomizer would do the trick, once it was recommended to me. Seemed simple enough and met my needs. I guess I will go research building though.
Do you include nicotine when working on a new flavor or do you omit that until you know the juice is vapable?
Also, I haven't been able to find any spruce flavoring, could I make this myself from its needles and some pg?
Quality nic shouldn't alter the taste of the juice perceptibly; i always test with nicotine. If it alters the taste significantly to where 0-nic tastes better than 2-3mg, get a better Nic vendor.
Also, no, you shouldn't do that. You're looking for Pine flavouring? The only thing I could find was a concentrate from a company in Australia, a "peachy-pine" flavour that required 18-22% flavour.
/u/skiddlzninja /u/abdada you ever come across a Pine flavour?
Thanks for the tips! I just figured it might be wasting nicotine if the flavors didn't work out.
I always test with nicotine. I'm going to be vaping with nicotine, so I need to be sure the flavor comes through well with my nicotine level before continuing with the flavor profile.
I never test with nicotine because I'm generally forced to make larger batches as test batches (120mL typically) so I hate wasting nic.
It also helped me quit the nicotine need and now it's just the nicotine appreciation.
I've been storing all my concentrates AND finished mixes in a mini fridge that is locked and not plugged in.
Should I move the mixes to something like a Storage tote and plug the mini fridge in for concentrates?
You could, but it isn't hurting anything as is. Just make sure the fridge is room temperature, and not holding extra heat. The concentrates don't need refrigeration; not the small bottles at least. If you're storing 4oz or more, it's a good practice to refrigerate.
Cool? Check Dark? Check
Should be ok as long as you're not trapping moisture in there, fridges always seem to do that when they are unplugged. Refrigeration may help slightly with long term storage but I just leave everything but nic in a drawer in the basement. Nic should be in the freezer.
Bought some Shisha Strawberry. First mix tasted great! I use a scale. Now every batch taste's like water downed koolaid. Thoughts? Could flavor be expired or losing its potency that quick? Btw I've been mixing for awhile but figured this was a good place to post. Yes I shake and yada yada.
At what percentage are you mixing the flavor? Are you leaving the caps off the bottles while they steep? Are you heat steeping, or any other form of "speed-steeping"?
Took Manson's advice and did single flavor mix at 7%. First two batches tasted great. Now it all tastes watered down. Really no steeping required but some times give hot water bath for 30min cause so thick. Otherwise pretty basic stuff. I just find it very odd. Maybe I'm not using it quick enough? Who knows...
It's not a timeframe thing. I'd say keep from heat steeping fruit mixes, they are very fragile to any sort of outside energy(heat, light, heavy vibration[ultrasonic].) I'd say try dropping that percentage in at least half. 7% is single flavor level for TFA strawberry flavors, and INW is much stronger.
Last thing is it possible I'm starting to notice a seepage of the plastic into the flavoring?
Alright, so I've been mixing my own ejuice from about early Feb now, and I have to say, I just can't figure it out.
Every flavor I mix, it tastes weak, or chemically. 10% is too weak, 20% can get chemical tasting, and anything in between produces barely any flavor at all. Even when I DO get flavor, it's nothing like the bottles I purchase pre-made from the store.
Now, I've heard about steeping, but on top of the fact that there's barely any good scientific information on it, there are a few issues I've had:
-
What is happening in steeping? People say it "homogenizes" the liquid, but this sounds like bullshit - the flavor is already diluted in PG, what about waiting for a week makes the flavor taste any more pronoucned? The molecules don't break down, and it's clear from the viscosity of the fresh mixed juice that the PG and VG are not separated. Secondly, the whole liquid gets colored by the flavor concentrate, which is an indication to me that it's not separated.
-
Everything I've encountered tells me that the oxidation of PG is TERRIBLE. So what's with letting your ejuice breathe every once in awhile, doesn't this just introduce more oxygen which, in turn, oxidizes the PG into the terrible byproducts?
-
So, despite concerns, I've put my ejuice to steep because I literally have no idea how to get good flavor from this homemade stuff. After a few days, I try my e-juice and it doesn't taste ONE BIT DIFFERENT. I've done this for Strawberry, Sweet Cream, Caramel, Beachwood, Toasted Marshmallow, Almond, and Honeysuckle flavors from nicotenelabs.com (Delosi is the flavor supplier). People talk about how after a week their juice tastes great. I put these flavors to steep on Wednesday, and tried them last night/this morning. I expected SOME change, but I didn't find ANY. Is this normal? The Strawberry and Sweet Cream flavors were 5mL samples, the rest were 10mL - I heard that smaller batches steep faster.
"Steeping" does NOT save bad liquid. It makes good liquid great, in some circumstances. (Of course, there are always exceptions to the rule, they don't apply at your position in the game.)
Mixing liquid is chemistry, not cooking. Since we're working with chemical volatiles, changing amounts and combinations can make massive difference in the flavors. We need to see what recipes you are using to be of any real use to you, and if you are using flavors we don't know about, then we can't help you then, either.
I strongly recommend you go to bull city vapors and pick up the flavors to make mustard milk and give it a shot. It's simple, it's tasty and a lot of people like it. Get good VG and PG (from BCV) and get some quality nicotine (from vapeclarity or liquidbarn) Mix that up, you'll like it. Skimp on ingredients, and you won't.
Just get one success under your belt, because there's another factor here: Your confidence. People who have bad experiences off the bat start to think they can't make good liquid. And once your mental game is gone, it's super easy to think everything tasted bad and that we're all fooling ourselves.
Take a breath, throw out the stuff you have if it's not good, and make some amazing juice.
Steeping is next month's concern. It won't help you now. Don't breathe your mix, that's bad advice (until you know why I'm wrong) and PG doesn't oxidize easily, you're thinking of the nicotine base.
>We need to see what recipes you are using to be of any real use to you, and if you are using flavors we don't know about, then we can't help you then, either.
Yeah, I posted my "recipes" - which are basically just variations on single flavors using between 10% and 20% flavoring. I tried making multi-flavor recipes, but when that seemed to fail, I resorted to just trying to get ANY flavor to work.
About the supplier, yeah, I just picked up some TFA, FW, and INW flavors. Before that, it was Delosi. Only things I've seen from them are mixed - some people hate it, some people enjoyed it, most people didn't know it. The nicotene I have seems to be pretty good, but obviously that could be wrong. It doesn't seem to have much of a taste or any smell, and I know that it satiated my nic cravings even as I've been stepping down the mg.
>Just get one success under your belt
Well, that's what I'm trying to do haha. I don't think I'll ever conclude that I'm unable to make good juice, since, as you said, it's chemistry, which means these recipes should be repeatable experiments with reproduce-able outcomes. It's just frustrating that I'm not sure what's wrong yet.
Give us an example of the recipes you're making.
> 2) Everything I've encountered tells me that the oxidation of PG is TERRIBLE. So what's with letting your ejuice breathe every once in awhile, doesn't this just introduce more oxygen which, in turn, oxidizes the PG into the terrible byproducts?
Do you mean oxidation of nicotine? I've never heard anyone mention oxidation of PG, only nicotine. I do not let my mixes breathe with the caps off because that's a sure way to allow volatiles to escape. I leave them be for a few days (at least) to steep in a cool dark cabinet.
No, I meant oxidation of PG, which can be accelerated by heat (so those warm water baths would be the worst ).
On my phone now but I will try to find a source.
As for my recipes, I gave up on trying to mix flavors and have been trying to get single flavors to taste like anything at all.
I did the flavors I listed above in 3mg batches, 10-15% flavor generally.
I've never heard of PG suffering from oxidizing especially in such short term. Definitely gonna need a source for that.
Your mixes don't taste like store bought or online bought liquids because you are mixing single flavors and using flavors that I'm sure many companies do not use. Formulating a recipe involves a lot of R and D so you can't just expect your single flavors at 10-15% to be gold. Some can be, but that's not the case the majority of the time. Maybe the flavors from nicotine labs are just garbage (I've never tried them). Look into getting flavors from more well known vendors (TFA, CAP, FW, FA, INW, FLV...) as there is way more data on their flavors and which are good or not good.
:1. Steeping is a mix between the homogenization of the flavors with each other and the diluents you use(PG/VG) and the venting off of aroma molecules that don't homogenize. And the flavors may be already dissolved in PG, but that doesn't mean that two different concentrates will readily homogenize when mixed. Take a look at the point where the Amazon and the Rio Negro meet. They are both water-based, but don't readily mix when they meet. Or google underwater rivers for a more extreme example that applies to diluents and solvents more directly.
> The molecules don't break down
This is somewhat correct. They don't break down, but they can react in minor ways. Take the interaction between Ethyl Maltol and the smaller aroma volatiles. Ethyl Maltol ends up taking over those volatiles and muting them, removing any sensory indication that they're in the mix.
:2. Would you mind linking sources that state the oxidation of PG is terrible? I haven't heard this in the year+ I've been mixing and am interested(and a bit skeptical).
I addressed letting bottles "breathe" in my mythbusting thread. Search the subreddit for mythbusting.(Or look at the top threads of all time and it's #4 I believe.
:3. Share the recipes. Let us help you find what's wrong with the juice, and this thread is a great place to share them without someone getting on you about posting etiquette. You should also find some of the top-rated recipes here and see if it's the flavorings you're using that are just shit. I haven't heard anything good about Delosi.
>Smaller batches steep faster
That's negligible.
>:2. Would you mind linking sources that state the oxidation of PG is terrible? I haven't heard this in the year+ I've been mixing and am interested(and a bit skeptical).
Working on it. I found a video citing a chemist a few months ago, but I can't seem to find it again.
>:3. Share the recipes.
I did that already, sort of, in comments. Basically, I gave up on trying to make "recipes" because it all just came out muted and I couldn't taste the flavors. Found recommendations that said you should try making single flavor batches to get a hang for what they'll taste like, so I started to doing that. I've been making batches between 10-20% flavoring, though the difference between the two never seems to matter. SOME flavors give me a chemical taste when at 20%, but generally speaking all the ranges taste like non-flavor.
Is it possible it's my coil and settings? Are there better coils and settings for extracting flavor? Everywhere I looked it seemed to be personal preference with HUGE variance, whether all the way down at like, 250 degree, 25 watts, or up to 75 wats 600 degrees.
>I haven't heard anything good about Delosi.
The two threads I found here about Delosi had both "good" and "sucks" reviews inside. As I'm so new and they're my second flavor vendor, I just don't know. Although it's possible they suck, considering I'm getting similar results from the other company I tried (nicvape.com) I'm thinking it's my process and not simply the flavors.
I've done copious amounts of research on PG/VG/nicotine/flavors and haven't come across any credible information about PG creating harmful byproducts due to oxidation, so tag me when you find that source, please.
You may be using too much flavor at 10% even. I'll have to look into delosi a bit more to get a better grasp on what the concentration is.
I've found 6-8 wrap 24g dual spaced coils to be the best for flavor. Simple to make, just make a parallel then unscrew the two wires for two evenly spaced coils.
If both flavor purchases were from "secondary" flavor companies(i.e. flavor companies not commonly used, and not listed here) it's possible that it could be the flavors still. As I stated before, find some of the contests here and purchase the flavors for the top recipes. You could also look at some of the more popular users here and follow their recipes.(anything from /u/notcharlesmanson, /u/tranceinate, /u/botboy141 will be great, I'll tag others in replies to this comment so that they can get paged and hopefully give some guidance as well.)
I am only gonna answer number one, because I am on my lunch break. 1.) 10% weak, 20% to strong and chemically. When I mix a batch, I usually mix in 100 ml quantities. 1 for shake and vape, 1 for short steep, 1 for long term (3-4 weeks). When I make a batch, I try to keep the overall amount of flavor to be between 6%-9%. Most of mine usually have 3-5 flavors in them, and if I want one to be the main flavor I usually have between 3-3.5% be just that flavor. When you start adding more than 5 you can start to get strange tastes, at least in my experience.
Here is an example of one of my favorite lime flavors that I have made. Creamy Mint Lime V2 4% Lime CP(cold pressed) - Flavour Art 1.5% Vanilla whipped cream - Capella 1% Extreme Ice - Flavor West
It was decent as a shake and vape, but after a few days of steeping it became so great. The lime flavor was spot on, and smooth from the vanilla whipped cream, and the ice left a good aftertaste. MY current blend is 70VG, 30 PG at 6mg.
Now only if I can replicate Vapergates Darth Vaper
This might come obvious to some, but I would still like to ask to be sure. Since (TFA) flavour essences are in PG, should I mix the base with a bit more VG to even it out? For example, if I'm aiming for 30/70VG, should I make the base at 25/75VG? Or is the flavour's PG impact so minuscule it doesn't matter?
Well you should be using a calculator to tell you exactly how much PG and VG to add to get it to 70/30. It does all the math for you.
To answer your question you take from the base PG in the mix depending on how much flavoring you add.
I'm still on the fence about mixing myself and thinking of just buying an already mixed base for my first round of experimenting, to focus on testing the flavours.
The recipes I've written down are all around 10% flavour, so it shouldn't vary that much. I'm not very finicky with the VP/PG ratio anyway, but consistency is key to recipes.
Thanks for your reply, that gave some food for thought.
An already mixed base is a great idea for someone just starting. As you seem to already have figured out, there is a small dilution of nic, and pg/vg ratios arent exact, but who cares! Get your feet wet, you can always jump all the way in after you feel comfortable.
Welcome!
Getting a mixed base is a waste of money to be honest. You could mix it yourself if you wanted to and it would be cheaper.
You would never have consistent ratios if you buy mixed. How stupid easy it is to mix it makes no sense. Figuring out what flavors and percentages to mix flavorings is the hard part.
If you're shooting for 70VG/30PG and your recipe is 10% total flavoring (since flavorings are PG based) then that 10% counts towards your 30% of pg. So, you'd add 20% pg in addition to the 10% of flavoring to get to 30% total.
Thanks, this was helpful. I think I just really underestimated how much PG they have.
You're welcome. I highly suggest downloading this calculator if you haven't already started using a calculator.
I just placed my order for everything I need to DIY and will be making the Mikes Melons(Cutwood Monster Melons) clone. I purchased TFA flavors and EM. The question I have is how will the quality of the following ingredients be? Amazon Essential Depot VG and PG, MyFreedomSmokes nicotine(I also ordered a 15ml bottle of NudeNicotine). Which nicotine would you guys recommend I Use? They are both 100mg 50vg/50pg and I will be using a scale and app to blend these juices correctly and accurately to 70vg/30pg 6mg nic.
edit some wordage
Based on others reviews, I dont think you will see any difference between the 2 nics. NN is a manufacturer, while MFS is a reseller. (Makes future orders easy huh?)
Regarding that recipe, its pretty good, but the EM isnt really needed. In fact it will mute the flavor over time. Sounds like you are on your way!
Welcome!
Awesome! I'll hold off on using EM for the first 15ml batch I make thanks! I also order several different flavors from MyFreedomSmokes TFA watermellon, strawberry ripe and coconut candy. I used to bar tend and all of this makes me excited!
One other tip, Bullcityvapor.com for future flavor orders. Or gremlindiy if you are out west. Both stock the largest selection across all the best brands. Great prices and fast shipping.
Ok, one more tip. If you like tfa mango, next time pick up Capella Sweet Mango instead. Thank me later....
Im looking for a good nicotine vendor that sells SMALL bottles of nicotine. Most of my juice is 0nic and I usually vape 1.5mg while I keep a bottle or two of 3mg around. So I dont use a lot of nicotine. Ive got a 100mg/ml bottle of nude nicotine, while this is mostly my fault, its turned rosey and its gotten peppery. Does anyone sell maybe 15ml bottles? Nude nicotine only goes to 50.
Is keeping nicotine in the freezer REQUIRED? Right now my nicotine is in the original bottle, in the shipping box. Whenever I mix I take the bottle from the box only long enough to draw however much nicotine I want and then I put it back in the box.
Not required, but a good idea. Nic will begin to oxidize the moment you first open the bottle, the higher the concentration of nic, the faster it will oxidize. Heat accelerates this process, hence the freezer.
Nude nic sells compressed argon (I think) that you spray into the bottle to displace oxygen to help it keep longer. You can also buy something similar meant for wine on Amazon. Anything similar meant to remove oxygen, especially after you have removed some volume and have air in the top of the bottle, will help.
Nude nic has a sample 15mL of nicotine and you only pay for shipping.
Carolina extract has a 120mL sample for $18
My understanding of the NN sample is that you can only order it once which I already have. If I can reorder that then that's exactly what Im looking for.
Thanks for reminding me of the sample though.
Im looking more for smaller bottles of nicotine not price. The nicotine ends up getting harsh before I use half a 120ml and my current bottle is pretty damn bad right now.
Okay. So i caved in last week and ordered from Nude Nicotine(slow shipping, perfect product..) 1000ml 70vg/30pg 3mg.
From BullCityVapor i got: capella-- vanilla custard v1 + v2, sweet cream, graham cracker
TFA -- dairy/milk , marshmallow, sweet cream
First thing I did was lookup random custard recipes and was all over this subreddit reading everything. So i made a 2 quick batches. A 15ml vanilla custard v1(cap) @ 10% + Sweet Cream @ 2%. Also a 15ml vanilla custard v2(cap) @ 10%. i then brought water to a boil and removed the water from the heat. put the 15ml bottles in the hot water, shook em every 10m or so for an hour.
The V1 taste just like butter to me and i was assuming maybe i put too much sweet cream. and since i've put v2 in my rig, i cant seem to taste anything but freaking butter. My girl said it was spot on custard however so i am assuming i've got some vape tongue goin on. i was really trying to find a smooth blend of a creamy vanilla(custard i know i like), to amend to Nude nicotine's Coffee Creme, to try to create a more... vanilla body to it.
any suggestions in my exploration of dairy/cream, of which items need to be used sparingly or which combination of my items would work better? i'm assuming the flavor of butter comes from the diacetyl in the V1, but i dont know.
Also any good drinks to remove the "layover" of flavors when testing batches?
Too much VC! Try cutting in half. (Just add 15 base or make a new batch at 5%). And age it man! Custards need 2 weeks min and 4 weeks optimum. And 2% is upper end for me on sweet cream. TFA French Vanilla goes really well with Cap VC.
And forget the boiling water. Warm mix just a couple minutes, until it thins, shake it well. Put in a cool dark place for aging, shaking again now and then. A shake and vape custard is rare, but FLV VC doesnt seem to need as much time, but IMO is not as flavorful as Cap.
I have a question about KOOLADA guys... 10% PG koolada by TFA- now what percentages do you guys mix at? And what's the steeping time after you mix?
I'm obviously thinking start at 1% for a fruit flavor as I am just looking to add that cooling sensation. But I have heard a lot of controversy as to going all the way up to 10% with it, now that's pretty hefty for an enhancer- I would think that would make it become unvapeable??
Give me your input on the situation please..
I see recipes that call for 10% PG Koolada used at 1 to 2%. Nope. Maybe it depends quite a bit on equipment. Maybe those are not meant for sub-ohming or something? Not sure. I've diluted my Koolada down to 2.5% PG Koolada to make it easier to use.
Start at 0.1% and work up from there. 10%? That sounds painful.
I'm kinda lazy and hate cleaning out my 30 ML glass bottles (also my largest bottles). If I have a recipe that I make over and over again, is there any harm (in both bodily and flavor fidelity) in re-making the recipe in the same mostly empty bottle?
is there any harm (in both bodily and flavor fidelity) in re-making the recipe in the same mostly empty bottle?
I hope not, because I do it all the time:) always with ldpe tho. Seriously, get you some bigger bottles and save yourself some time to be, you know, kinda lazy....
So what sized bottles do you make of you favorite recipes? I want to make big bottles of nana cream and stuff but I'm not sure where to draw the line. ~240ml maybe? Also any links would be appreciated. Large glass bottle cause shipping to skyrocket, so Amazon links would be preferred :)
My Raspberry Custard just gets better and better, so the last bottle was 300ml. Most everything else 100ml, after a 30ml tester and finding whether it will hold up to a long steep.
I like to use a bigger bottle than needed too, so I can shake the crap out of it. I bought a 12 pack of 120ml ldpe bottles off amazon. In a pinch I have used empty water bottles=)
Hey guys, getting ready to place my first order. I'm not in the US but I found some local suppliers. My big question is, how much/how many flavorings to order with enough PG, VG and nic to make 2.25 liters?
I already looked at the "My First Order" Flavors link and I was able to find about 2/3s of them through one supplier, in 1 oz bottles.
Question #2, regarding stuff like Acetyl Pyrazine, Koolada, Smooth, Sour Flavor, Sweetener etc. do I need to order any of this stuff? It's not on the "My First Order" Flavors list.

Depends on what recipe you're doing. If you're shooting for under 15% flavoring, you'll need 337.5mL total flavoring, or about 12 1oz bottles. I'd suggest you find some highly rated recipes here before buying your flavors, and purchase the smallest size flavors you can to be sure you like the recipe. Then, you take whichever recipe(s) you want, add the total flavor percentage, and multiply your total volume by the decimal. 25% = .25, 10% = .10, and so on.

No. Those are what I consider higher level items, don't worry about them until you are able to realize your juice needs them.
To add to what /u/skiddlninja said, download and play with a calculator (I recommend the third one down). After picking out only recipes that have appeal to you and have POSITIVE feedback. Then you will know exactly how much you need.
Some unasked for advice tho, slow down=). Setting a goal of making over 2 liters of juice for anyone, let alone your first time, is pretty damn ambitious. I have been at this for almost a year now, and 300ml of one particular recipe is the largest batch I feel comfortable making.
Welcome!
Thanks for the advice!
I'm not thinking of doing one 2L batch, I was going to order a liter each of PG and VG and 250ml of nicotine to make a whole bunch of different flavors. Sorry for the confusion.
I'm looking to start making my own juice and I just bought 1L of VG and some concentrates along with some empty bottles, what other materials do I need? Since I use 0 nic and high VG/PG ratio do I even need to buy more PG? Is there list of instructions that I need to follow? What should I never do when making juice?
You could read the beginner's guide for a comprehensive guide to making ejuice. It's listed in the sidebar.
I'd recommend getting a scale, it makes mixing quicker and easier than using syringes.
As for what never to do, just take a look at the posts we have archived over at /r/shitty_diy_ejuice
Alright. This attempt at Grape is really starting to piss me off! Initially my 1st attempt with MBV was wayyyy too strong. So I tried diluting it down by expanding the volume of base mix by double (basically cut the concentration by half) Yep still too damn strong. So what do I do next? Yep double down again! And yet again same result! So now I've got 3 bottles of ass grape that'll probably go into the vape trash... not to be out done. This morning I try yet again. Dialing down the concentrate to what I felt was absolutely gonna be mild. I mixed all my ingredients very well and soaked the bottle of juice in warm water for about 15 minutes and threw a few drops on my RDA and yet again... Horrible Ass Something that don't taste like anything grape!!! Here is my mix. Any thoughts or suggestions?
3% MBV Grape 1.5% MBV Belvarian Cream 2% MBV Menthol
It's a 65 VG 35 PG at about 6mg Nic
There is absolutely nothing Grapish about it and there is not one iota of Menthol to it. Yet it doesn't seem to me that the Belvarian Cream percentage is something that'll over power it. Please help! I swear it almost smells like nail polish remover!
If you've done that much, it's probably time to try out some new grape flavors. Maybe your palate hates FW/MBV Grape or maybe it's just a shit flavor?
Last time you posted your grape question, I suggested to look into other grapes and I think that's your only choice at this point. search for "best grape" in this sub reddit or something along those lines.
Also, it's Bavarian Cream :)
I figured I was spelling it wrong lol! Yeah I'm gonna have to go for another grape. Sigh!
So apparently I must have dreamt about this last night. LMAO. I woke up immediately and grabbed the bottle of MBV Happy Rancher and tossed in 3% I noticed just in the smell itself a change. I'm letting it steep for a couple hours before trying. Let's see what comes of this.
Okay, so I have completely given up on the MBV Grape. Sadly I'm going to be dumping about 100ml of juice from my colossal Noob mistakes and recorrections... Has anyone else noticed the smell of the MBV or FW Grape? When I pulled the bottle of concentrate out tonight I noticed it smelled like nail polish! This would be what I was smelling with the failed attempts. Acetone? It was horrid! The Watermelon is hittin the trashcan too.
I just ordered from TFA.. fingers crossed I can salvage the remaining PG/VG Premixed Nic I have.
Guess my next order will be separate PG, VG and Nic.
Thanks to those that have tried helping me with their feedback.
Hi. Fairly new to DIY, can someone tell me what this recipe may be like, obviously the best way would be for me to mix it and try but, I am lacking ingredients and don't want to buy unless it is going to work out! Banana Cream (DX) ( TPA) Strawberry Cream (CAP) Vanilla Custard v1 (CAP) EM (vapable)
Could anyone give me your thoughts on this recipe and maybe the percentages, I would prefer the Banana to be prominent and not too bold on the vanilla custard, I would like it as an adv but still a pleasant sweetness!
Any help is appreciated !
2% TFA Banana Cream (regular, not DX version)
5% Cap Sweet Strawberry
3% Cap VC V1
Banana and straw is already a great combo, the custard should play well too.
Thanks for the recipe, if I only have DX and strawberry and cream do you think percentages will be the same!?
