blueberry is destroying me
submitted over 9 years ago by Space_Pegasus

hello guys! Been lurking for a while and recently started mixing some juice with a buddy of mine and i've ran into a bit of a problem. I pray i don't violate any rules with this post, and I appologize in advance if i do in hopes i don't get penetrated by the mods. Also I don't post much so i'm quite terrible with formatting but I'm gonna try!

Anyways, my problem lies with finding a really good blueberry flavour to use in a blueberry custard. When, i bought my first batch of diy stuff from the diy shop nearby i was super excited to try to emulate my favorite juice which is Galleon by Captain Oliver's which is a blueberry custard out of the Toronto area in Ontario, Canada.

So I get home i'm all excited and i mix:

  • Blueberry Extra (TFA) 15%
  • Graham Cracker Clear 5%

Needless to say it was absolutely terrible and tasted like burnt toast, or burnt graham cracker. From there i realized that it was not going to be easy and did a bunch of looking around on this sub and found what i could about blueberry. Although, it seems that didn't help me too much. Next i tried:

  • Blueberry Extra (TFA) 8%
  • Lemon Sicily (FA) 8%
  • Vanilla Custard V1 (CAP) 4%

and:

  • Blueberry Extra (TFA) 4%
  • Blueberry Wild (TFA) 4%
  • Bilberry (FA) 1%

The one with lemon sicily showed a bit of promise but i still got that burnt graham cracker taste which is when i discovered that It wasnt the Graham cracker giving me that taste but rather the Blueberry extra. and then with the triple blueberry once again i got that burnt-ish taste. The blueberry Wild is probably the best Blueberry ive found. I tried doing the whole 50/50 Blueberry Extra to Blueberry wild and all I get is that burnt taste with anything involving extra. Hence im planning to stay away from Blueberry extra if possible

At this point every attempt i had made at blueberry was completely unvapeable to me. Then yesterday i tried to Andromeda Clone on eliquid recipes minus the pom(because i don't have it) and it was the most vapeable blueberry juice i'd mixed so far which was:

  • Blueberry Wild (TFA) 8%
  • DX Bevarian Cream (TFA) 4%

Although this is the best Blueberry juice i've made it is still nowhere near Galleon which is really what im striving for.

I tried a juice today a friend had that was a different blueberry and it was definitely Blueberry Wild that was used in that. It made me glad that i could identify what was being used, but sad because it made me realize that i definitely didn't have the blueberry flavour that i needed to make Galleon

I'm going to place another order tonight or tomorrow and I'm hoping to pick up Blueberry (FA) and Blueberry Muffin (FLV), which i hope will be much better. Although, I'm pretty sure the Blueberry Muffin is newer than Galleon so I got alot riding on Blueberry (FA)

I've tried mixing other non-blueberry flavours and they've mostly turned out great, and if it wasn't for them i'd feel pretty discouraged but i still need to get this blueberry right.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated, especially if one of the masters here has tried Galleon or and can chime in with what they think some of the possible flavours are being used in Galleon.

If no one has tried Galleon i would probably be willing to pay to have a bottle shipped to an expert for decoding purposes.

Once again, a thousand apologies if I'm breaking any rules.

PS. If anyone has tried Corsair by the same company (Captain Oliver's) I would love to hear anything you have to say about that as well. Its next on my list after i can get close to Galleon.

in hopes i don't get penetrated by the mods lol

All that typing to ask which BB people like, I don't think they will mind. They aren't that unreasonable (well, there is that one moderator..jk)

I didn't think a good BB existed, until I picked up FW. Stronger than Wild, not as candy-like as Extra. 3% standalone is pretty good.

And there is plenty of praise for FLV, but I haven't had it.

lol ya they seem pretty reasonable, hell they must be, skiddlzninja just saved my life. they run a tight ship though, which i think is good. Its just from reading a lot of the posts i have developed a lot of respect and an equal amount of fear for a certain mod..jk Anyways, now that this post exists thank you very much for the suggestion, sorry i took so long to reply and ill make sure i get FW next. I find a lot of these blueberry flavours are much more candy then natural and natural is what i get from Galleon. I'm going to have like 8 blueberrys by the end of this..

FLV reminds me of booberry cereal, I don't have much to compare it to, but very sweet candyish and sort of "grapy". Very unrealistic as a fruit, but wonderful for other purposes.

No specific help on blueberry, but some of those percentages seem awful high. Check ELR but I see blueberry extra being used around 5%, FA lemon Sicily around 2%, and blueberry wild around 5%.

Try dialing it back.

Also search on Google blueberry Site:Reddit.com/r/diy_ejuice

Yeah the blueberry does seem much too high .

by Space_Pegasusover 9 years ago

Fair enough. I had heard from people that extra and wild were both really weak flavours, so after my first failure i figured screw it I'm gonna go all out. Don't tell anyone but after the first one, I tried:

  • Blueberry Extra 17%
  • Bevarian Cream 3%

by Paleone123over 9 years agoProud Sidebar Reader!

TFA flavors do tend to be a bit weaker than some other brands but if you use too much of any flavor it will start to overwhelm your olfactory senses and actually seem weaker than a lesser amount. Most of the time if you have a lot of flavor just cutting everything in half tastes exactly the same or better.

by helloiamyourpeepawover 9 years agoProud Sidebar Reader!

TFA Blueberry Extra is weak on it's own, but easily holds from 3-10%. You'll need another supporting blueberry to make it work, in the meantime a quick and easy bb cream from when I started out was 10% Blueberry Wild, 3% French Vanilla, 2% Bavarian Cream.

FW is the best. I have all the major ones except for CAP.

by HexCoilsover 9 years ago

In my experience cap blueberry is nearly flavorless. Don't know why

by akaDRooPYover 9 years ago

the new flavor CAP Blueberry Jam is really good. It tastes like a ripened blueberry with the skin on it.

I swapped out sweet strawberry and used Blueberry Jam in the Unicorn Milk leak. It is bomb!

Yeah, don't think that one was out the last time I placed an order with them. Their flavors seem so hit or miss to me, but maybe I'll try it next time around.

by Sehn82over 9 years ago

I still prefer FW Blueberry to CAP Blueberry jam. CAP has a gelatin like aftertaste which may be good in certain applications. For a straight up Blueberry you can't go wrong with FW

by mikarmover 9 years agoPâtissier

Not a fan of cap blueberry. Takes a lot to get flavor and the flavor isn't very good once you get it.

1 points

by Space_Pegasusover 9 years ago

Ya seems FW may be the way to go based on this thread, which is weird though because a lot of the others that i read had a focus on bilberry, Wild, and Extra.

by akaDRooPYover 9 years ago

not a big fan of FW blueberry. I have almost 8oz of it with nothing to do with it

Do you pair FW with anything else? Say TFA Blueberry Wild or Extra?

9% TFA BB Wild + 1%-1.5% FW BB is my favorite. :)

> Anyways, my problem lies with finding a really good blueberry flavour to use in a blueberry custard.

TFA Blueberry wild and FA Bilberry

2:1 ratio, respectively

That is pretty much perfect blueberry.

1 points

by tchefacegeneralover 9 years ago

Can I ask how much you tend to use of each in for example a custard or a cream?

I see most people using Bilbery at 0.5% which means 1% wild, I can't see wild being noticable at all at 1% as I find it to be super weak. (I just got Bilberry in and really want to make a good blueberry as well)

1 points

by Vurveover 9 years agoVurve with the Swurve

The ratio isn't set in stone, but you always want to lean heavier towards Blueberry Wild.

1% bilberry and 2-3% blueberry wild. It really just depends how strong you want the blueberry flavor, and what the other competing flavors are.

1 points

by skiddlzninjaover 9 years agoThat one moderator. You know, the honey guy.

Have you tried FW blueberry?

1 points

by Space_Pegasusover 9 years ago

My only problem with the Wild and Bilberry is that I find they are more of a fake blueberry. I'll definitely try this though. It cant hurt right?

1 points

by Vurveover 9 years agoVurve with the Swurve

I'm trying to come up with a ratio for a more realistic one.

I think FLV Blueberry will be important in this, but it's too realistic by itself. It leaves a bitter aftertaste.

by tranceinateover 9 years agoIn a good mood for now - don't piss me off.

Even at 1.5%?

I use FLV Blueberry @2% and FA Bilberry @0.5% for a main blueberry note personally. There is a TON of praise for FW Blueberry as well... As seen in this thread. Good Luck!

by seabterryover 9 years agoMixologist

My Blueberry Madness is a Blueberry Custard and the blueberry flavor is 5% FW Blueberry backed up by 0.5% FA Bilberry. DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE FW Blueberry!

Main I know exactly what you are going through. I have been trying to pin down a Blueberry yogurt recipe for like 8 months now. I am obsessed with it, I dream about it and think about it all day at work and it is driving me insane. I have bought every version of blueberry this and that out there and still no luck.

What I have learned however is that Blueberry alone will not get it. There has to be some supporting ingredient there to contrast with the blueberry to make it stand out. Flavor West's Blueberry and to me CAP's Blueberry are awesome, but they just don't last. I can add 15% of FW or CAP blueberry to something and shake and vape it and it's awesome, but the next day, the flavor has all but disappeared. I am at the stage now of trying to find what other ingredients I will need to lift the flavor up. Good luck to you and please let us know how you do.

fuck man I just made the most insane blueberry combo in my custard you guys NNEEEEEEDDD to get medicine flower blueberry.

  • 3.5% Blueberry FW
  • 3% Strawberry TFA (carries over zer ostrawberry flavor, just smooths it out A LOT)
  • .75% Bilberry fa
  • .5% Forest Fruit FA
  • .3% Blueberry MF (.25 is great also)

This is the most orgasmic blueberry I have ever tasted. I never tried it when first made it as I was making it for some orders I had, then I noticed an intoxicating berry flavor coming from my girlfriend who doesn't even like berries. She was vaping it in her griffin in another room, this shit permeates :D :D

Nice, this makes me very jealous. Me and my buddy just placed an order for some more flavours but Diy ejuice apparently doesnt have medicine flower, gonna have to figure out another way to get that

I just received my first batch of PG, VG and nic from my brother. Syringes, measuring flask, blunt needles and flavours still in the post. I had intended to go for a blueberry flavour first so this thread is really handy :) I'm all excited now. Had to check for mail after I read this in excitement

I use Medicine Flower Blueberry at 0.5 to 0.8%. It's spot on blue berry. But beware. It's a superconcentrated flavor.

1 points

by Space_Pegasusover 9 years ago

I've read a bit about MF, it seems the consensus is that they can do no wrong so i may have to try out some of their flavours.

2 points

by flipwichover 9 years agoMixologist

I've found MF Blueberry to have more of the tart "skin" of the blueberry flavor, rather than the sweet "meat". I use it to pop blueberries out of a mix, if needed, but not as a base blueberry.

Concentrated Blueberry (Concentrated is the name of the manufacturer) is pretty good, although a bit more toward candy blueberry. But at least I can taste it. It's very strong, so 1-2% is enough.

edit: also going to say that a lot of the percentages you've noted in your OP are really high. One that caught my eye is the Lemon Sicily at 8%... that stuff is really, really strong and I use it to a maximum of 1.5%. I usually use it at 0.5% for a slight lemon, and sourness.

1 points

by To0nMaNover 9 years ago

Their flavors are spot on as they are extracted from actual fruits. This also means that they will taste a bit different from batch to batch but i can rarely tell any difference. They also need appx 1 month curing time minimum, in my opinion. ECX sells it as Lotus Flower.

by CheebaSteebaover 9 years agoFrugivore

I will start out by saying that I don't have much experience with blueberry aside from FLV Blueberry Muffin, which is a pretty nice blueberry for bakeries with a touch of FA Bilberry, but only for bakeries.

You don't have to be so concerned, lol; a well thought-out question is A-OK in most everybody's book. As long as you spark a good discussion, bring something interesting to the table, or offer a good baseline for people to provide help/opinions you're good for the most part. It's mostly about common sense & courtesy so we don't get flooded with innane content, as well as showing that you're not just being lazy. By not utilizing the vast sea of knowledge that is the internet one is really only doing themselves a disservice.

I'm glad you've decided to get in to the zany world of DIY. I think you're doing a really good job so far. Keep on mixing and I hope to see more content from you =)

That makes sense. I think a lot of the reason i was unsure of whether or not the post was okay is because there has already been a few threads asking similar things. Although i did feel i was craving more information after reading them. Thanks a lot for the words of encouragement. Helps a lot in the fight against blueberry.

by jordan917over 9 years ago

I did something similar to one of the ones you have, but my percentages were more like this :

  • TFA Blueberry Extra 5%
  • FA Lemon Sicily 2%
  • CAP Vanilla Custard 2%

That's weird you're getting a burnt taste from the Blueberry Extra, it's one of my favorite Blueberries out there. Wild is good too, as well as FW Blueberry. Bilberry is just so gross to me for some reason, I can't stand it. I'm a big Blueberry fan and I think it goes so well with Lemon. Lemon Sicily and Vanilla Custard CAP are very strong flavors, so try them at low percentages.

by Space_Pegasusover 9 years ago

Maybe its just my Blueberry Extra. Is it supposed to be brownish? The smell seems blueberry but the taste is like I said very burnt ish. Ill try again at your percentages and also try subbing wild, then subbing the wild with wild and billberry like Vurve said. Thanks!

Yes. I use just a little of it with BB (MF).

Could anyone perhaps post some of their blueberry custard recipes that they don't mind sharing so that i can compare them and see what is in common? Also I think that would help anyone else that begins the blueberry hunt and searches the subreddit.

ALSO, should i edit the post to include this comment or leave it here?

ALSO ALSO, am I safe to assume that most people on this sub are american? I'm just wondering for future reference in case I ask about a Canadian made flavour. I was almost sure someone would have tried Galleon before.

I only use TFA blueberry (wild and extra) in one mix I currently do. It has the same flavor as the blueberry bits in a muffin and I use both at either 4% or 5%. Try dropping your percentages way down.

1 points

by juice_junkieover 9 years ago

5% Blueberry wild is good to mix with about 1-2% bilberry fa. Then I would add about 2 drops to a 10ml of medicine flower blueberry or super concentrated blueberry that u can get from bull city.

1 points

by platypusrmeover 9 years ago

Blueberry wild is rather weak. I generally mix it between 11-13% if I want it to be a primary flavor. I'm personally not too fond of FA Bilberry, because it always gives off a weird taste for me even at lower percentages. It pairs very well with CAP French Vanilla and FA Fresh Cream if you want to add a creaminess to it.

Surprised nobody's mentioned LA Blueberry yet. I've been working on a blueberry donut mix and it's there only blueberry that comes through properly around 2%. Add 1-.5% bilberry and it tastes like a blueberry muffin. Delicious!
