A simple blackberry bourbon recipe (suggestions welcome)
submitted over 9 years ago by erttt

Thought I'd share a recipe I made a few days ago. I personally enjoy bakery/dessert mixes most of the time, but with the warm weather coming, I wanted to incorporate some fruit into a "dirty" kind of mix if that makes sense. Being a bourbon/whiskey drinker, I saw a bottle of blackberry bourbon at the store and it clicked that I have ingredients to replicate something like that. I'm sure you could sub brandy for the bourbon in this mix, so let me know if you try that out.

So onto the mix here. Pretty simple 3 ingredients.

  • 5% TFA Kentucky Bourbon
  • 2% TFA Brown Sugar Extra
  • .5% TFA Blackberry

Some quick notes here. It can be shake and vape, but I'd give it a few days to blend. My inspiration was on the wavelength of 5 pawns - castle long. This mix is not as complex at all, but has some similar notes.

  • TFA Kentucky Bourbon - I set this flavor at 5% because I wanted some booziness, but not overbearing. This is the base of the mix, so I found 5% to be a great starting point. For more booziness, I'd go up to 6% but I think you'll find 5% is perfect for the base of the mix. As you let the mix age, it'll settle down a bit too.

  • TFA Brown Sugar Extra - This is for sure a strong flavor additive, so 2% might be too much for some, but for me it's what I like. It provides a nice sugary mouthfeel and texture on the exhale. Also it helps make the blackberry a little darker in taste. Kind of like a baked blackberry pie. Perfect for a bourbon mix, as I didn't want the blackberry to be overpowering or too sweet for this mix. When you get a flavored spirit at the store, it always still has the booziness with a touch of the fruit added. That was my concept here. The brown sugar also blends great with bourbon, cutting down on the overall alcoholyness.

  • TFA Blackberry - Nice and tart blackberry. For those that have used it, you know how strong and overpowering this flavor can be. .5% provides just enough blackberry without muting out the bourbon.

Simple little mix, great for those that enjoy castle long. Suggestions welcome.

Do you have FA Liquid Amber? Based on your description of how the brown sugar works it might be perfect for this mix. Abdada's notes on it here

I second this as well as suggest subbing 1% Vanilla Bourbon(INW) for 1% Brownsugar. They play really well together.

All in all this looks tasty though.

I have inw vanilla bourbon on hand. I'm going to mix up your suggestion today actually and report back with some initial tasting notes and let another bottle sit. I was thinking about inw vanilla bourbon in this mix but for some reason omitted it. Thanks for a great suggestion

This sounds perfect for this mix. Thank you for that suggestion and link! I have a bunch of FA flavors like oak wood and such, but for some reason never got liquid amber. This sounds perfect. Will order this up

How does the Oak Wood behave? I really want a alcohol vape but can't find a good recipe! Tbh most of the time I vape without flavorings because I'm tired of sweet flavors

The only time I really use it is in the castle long clone. It turns the coconut flavor into the husk of the coconut. Also great for a tobacco vape. But with bourbon alone, it can give it that aged bourbon barrel taste. It's a pretty cool flavor. If you look up hic notes on, he goes over almost all the fa flavors. Good info

Nice. I just mixed this up with some variations. I kept Kentucky Bourbon @ 5%, reduce Brown Sugar to 1.5%, added Toasted Marshmallow @ 1.5%, upped BlackBerry to 0.75% added Vanilla swirl and Raspberry Sweet @ 0.75%

Pretty interesting. Almost a syrupy or jammy esque flavor to it behind the bourbon booze. Thanks for sharing.

Definitely will be making this. I've been both thoroughly enjoying Kentucky Bourbon in several mixes and wondering what the heck I'm going to do with all this insanely strong TFA blackberry that I stupidly ordered 4 oz of without researching first. I'm embarrassed that I didn't come up with this recipe or something very similar myself.

It's still a work in progress but it's pretty good. I just whipped up another batch with inw vanilla bourbon. Def rounded it out and made it slightly creamier and fluffier. Still need to wait for steeping results. 4oz of blackberry. Damn lol that's a lot. I have 4 mixes I vape on the reg and all these flavors that just sit around so that's kinda why I mixed this up. I hate not using flavors I bought lol

Same here! I don't think I'll order INW Vanilla Bourbon for this but after I try your original recipe I might go in a similar direction with some TFA Vanilla Swirl or FA Vanilla Bourbon. Or maybe replace some of the brown sugar with toasted marshmallow, which goes really well with Kentucky Bourbon.

Hell yeah man u can do a lot with this recipe and make it suit your taste. I wish people would post more starter recipes and kinda just see where people take it from there. Be cool to see how people turn a recipe into their own you know

I bet a licorice/anise note would be good here, in a very low percentage.

You can add coconut for smoother version.

Did you ever end up subbing something in place of the brown sugar? Im interested to know if caramel or french vanilla creme would make an acceptable substitute.

Also, necrobump!
