First two mixes, more muted than I'd expected. Details inside.

Hey all,

This sub is a fantastic resource! I've been lurking and reading and soaking up all the info I can for a while now, so a few days ago I decided to take the plunge and make my first order.

I got all the flavours for a couple of recipes, unfortunately I was a little drunk when i made the order, so I unintentionally subbed a couple of things, oops!

Anyway, these are what I made, subs noted:

Jam Doughnuts

  • Nicotine juice 48 mg (100% PG) 12.5%

  • PG dilutant 0.5%

  • VG dilutant 69%

  • Cake Batter (CAP) 1.5%

  • Glazed Doughnut (CAP) 9%

  • Graham Cracker (Clear) (TPA) 1.5% (I subbed in Graham Cracker (FW))

  • Sweet Strawberry (CAP) 6% (I subbed in Sweet Strawberry (CAP) New RF!?)

Cosmic Fog Milk & Honey Clone

  • Nicotine juice 48 mg (100% PG) 12.5%

  • PG dilutant 1%

  • VG dilutant 70%

  • Graham Cracker (FW) 8%

  • Marshmallow (TPA) 3%

  • Peanut Butter (TPA) 1.5% (I subbed in Peanut Butter v2 (CAP))

  • Vanilla Custard v1 (CAP) 2% (I subbed in Vanilla Custard v2 (CAP))

  • Vanilla Swirl (TPA) 2%

I shook both juices well and then gave them a bath for 1hr in hot water (I don't have any fancy equipment for this so I just made some hot water and topped it off every 15 mins to keep it hot). I then shook them lots more. They have now steeped for 2 days each in my drawer.

Now both flavours are ok, but they are fairly muted. The doughnuts tastes of dough, but I don't really get the strawberry. And the milk and honey just tastes vaguely of milk I suppose, some biscuit. Really weak.

I'm fully ready for you guys to tell me I've fucked it all up somehow :) Best guesses from me would be either the heat, the flavour subs, or whack mixing percentages.

I'd really appreciate it if you could offer a little guidance.

Cheers!

EDIT: Amazing response from everyone in the sub, I'm really bowled over, cheers! :)

Give it time. Stuff needs to steep, come back in a few days and try them again. Then after a week, try again. I think you will see a big difference. Cap Vanilla Custard v1 takes a least a week to develop, not sure about v2.

More steepage. Will do. I'm taking notes on them every couple of days as they mature so I'll see how that goes as they progress.

So you don't think my subs, %s, or the hot water are a massive problem?

I believe tranceinate covered that way better than I could. But for sure you don't want to get your juice too hot, just warm enough to shake easier if at all.

Yea I think I'm gonna scrap the water all together for next batch.

I'd like to add, that milk n honey clone tastes nothing like the original. The clone is super harsh and literally tastes nothing even close to cosmic fogs

Ok good to know. Mine isn't harsh, but I may have muted it down a bit with the water bath.

I would chill out a bit with the hot-water bath. It's not needed for most juices and definitely shouldn't be the default treatment of every mix.

Definitely. I'm just going to sack it for my future mixes. Thanks so much for the advice :)

I can't give any advice on the Cosmic Fog clone, as I've never had the original nor mixed up the clone. But one thing I can say about the doughnut mix is what I saw in the comments. I just picked up that same flavour because I'm working on a strawberry glazed doughnut recipe. I mixed my first attempt at 5% on the glazed doughnut and it completely overpowered the entire mix. At 9%, I can only imagine the hell it has wrought.

What I've been doing with my recipes lately is just starting small on percentages of things that I even think might overpower something. Then slowly increase. A regular steep of time will help more that hot water baths, but most recipes will at least give you a decent idea of what it will taste like with a good shake. For your next batch, try starting out with 2-3% of the glazed doughnut. Mix it, vape it, and slowly add more in increments of 0.5% (0.1% if you are mixing with a scale) until you feel like you've found a sweet spot. It may fuck your percentages up a bit for that particular mix, but keep notes of how much you add so when you go back with the next one, it'll be perfect. Those little shifts in percentage on the "tester" mix won't really affect too much in the long run.

Sorry for the wall of text, I'm slightly intoxicated.

Hehe, it is pretty doughy :) I don't have scales yet, as I didn't want to get in for too much money until I know it's worth it. Side effect of that is I'm not confident mixing less than 30ml, as the volumes get really small.

Next step is to get scales so I can mix @ 10ml accurately then do some more tests with varying (less) amounts of doughnut in the mix.

Any chance your nic tastes like balls?

> Glazed Doughnut (CAP) 9% & Cake Batter CAP 1.5%

my face when I saw those = O_O
I highly suspect those 2 @ such high percentages combined with the one hour hot bath is what's causing the muting.

OP lower Cake Batter to .5% & Glazed Doughnut to 4% in recipe 1.

Cosmic Fog's Milky & Honey reportedly doesn't actually taste like milk & honey, but rather something of the sort similar to your clone recipe. I say reportedly because that's all i've ever read about it. Haven't tried the juice.

Hey man thanks for the advice, I'm noting that down right now for batch 2 :)

It's a recipe off e-liquid-recipes.com, and I upped the Glazed doughnut from 8% due to a suggestion in the comments. I also upped the graham cracker by 0.5%

Oh. I personally don't use Cap Glazed Doughnut over 4%, just starts tasting kind of weird over that point for me.

If you need to warm up your juice to make it less viscous for shaking, only warm up your VG, don't get it hot. Heating aromatic compounds(flavourings) degrades them & evaporates the molecules rather quickly. I live in South Florida, so, I don't have to warm anything. I just pour shake & go.

graham cracker i've found is really strong.. dont go too nuts with it.

Second this, glazed doughnut at 4 is my max, and definitely let it steep a week or so for the playdough aspect to go away, right off the bat it's a little plasticky.

Lolz :)

They aren't harsh tasting at all, very smooth on the throat and I don't taste anything funny/weird in them, so I don't think so. Of course without testing I couldn't be sure as I have no frame of reference.

If it helps the entire order came from vapable.com

i dont know if it's me, but hot water seems to kill off the strawberry flavour.

Sounds like a one-two punch! Heat killed the Strawberry and a massive bunch of doughnut topped it off! :)

9% donut and 8% graham cracker is a lot. Reduce it and try again.

Ok dudes, thanks for all the advice.

Jam Doughnuts V2

  • Nicotine juice 48 mg (100% PG) 12.5%

  • PG dilutant 0.5%

  • VG dilutant 69%

  • Cake Batter (CAP) 1%

  • Glazed Doughnut (CAP) 4%

  • Graham Cracker (Clear) (TPA) 1% (I subbed in Graham Cracker (FW))

  • Sweet Strawberry (CAP) 6% (I subbed in Sweet Strawberry (CAP) New RF!?)

I made 10ml, which I think was pretty accurate using a 1ml syringe for flavours.

Tasting Notes 13/03/16 - Shake 'n' Vape - Nicer, more balanced. Can taste strawberry on exhale and slight doughiness in body. Seems to need sweetness.

At this point I feel adding a small amount of either Vanilla Custard CAP or Vanilla Swirl CAP may round off the flavour. I was thinking about either 0.5% or 1%, what do you think? I expect the doughiness to develop over time as it did in version 1.

Let them steep. Also, hot water baths have been known to possibly mute flavor.
