I get it. You're a nice guy/gal and want to help a noob. Someone who has spent zero time here asks a boneheaded question, and you decide to help. DON'T.
PLEASE stop replying to these posts.
My tolerance is at its end, and the posts are going to be deleted anyway, so don't waste your time. IMO it's downright dangerous to give some of these people a little bit of knowledge which might in turn give them a false sense of confidence. If your son asks you what fire is, you don't give him a lighter, point him to a pile of leaves and walk away. In effect that is what we are doing to some of these noobs.
I am NOT saying don't help the person who is at 90% get to 95%. I AM saying don't help the person who is at 5% get to 10%.
Hit the "report" button and move on. Please.
I get it man.. I do but it's really saddening to see folks just jump in and start being dicks to people. It's clear the guy earlier didn't read the side bar, hell, he admitted to it. On the other hand it really sucks that the regular posters here attack someone and then go on to insult them, of course it is going to turn into a shit show, someone has to be the bigger person and point the poster in the right direction other than saying "READ THE SIDE BAR NOOB." If they are lazy, they are lazy no matter what anyone does, it will never change but at the very least if you explain the sidebar to them instead of attacking them, it is possible to turn the ignorant and not the lazy ones into a great DIYer. No?
Just my 2cents.
I agree. I'm a noob and am reading everything I can here and elsewhere, but this post has turned me off from ever asking any questions here. Really not a good environment, it seems. I wonder how many folks get confused about calculating nicotine content and are too scared to ask for fear of pissing off the elders. I don't expect people here to hold every idiot's hands, but this offensive attitude sucks.
If u need help ask me in a PM and I'll try to help ya.
Thanks! Despite what I said about the bad attitude of this post, I have learned so much from all of the info here, especially the side bar. I truly appreciate all of the info here.
But this stuff is fairly complicated for a beginner, and mixing nicotine for the first time is a bit intimidating (as it should be) and there is some bad terminology slung around out there (it took me a while to realize that folks in local shops were wrong to use mg, not even mg/ml, and nicotine percentage interchangeably). I had to read a LOT of posts to feel confident that I knew what I was doing there, so I'm not surprised that there are folks who've read the sidebar but still don't get it.
We have the new mixers questions threads every Monday for this reason. No question gets flamed there, and they all get answered. We've created a tool for people to ask their easy questions without having to worry about users being rude to them, and very few users take advantage of it.
Ask me a question - any question. If I can't find the answer with the resources that are here within 5 minutes, I'll send you 2 50mls of any recipe I have the ingredients for. I am THAT confident that 99% of what you need to know has already been covered.
OP was pointed toward the sidebar, then he called everyone assholes. People are generally TOO nice around here (obviously not referring to /u/abdada).
That's the thing man, the shit escalated because of a reply to him. It wasn't just "Hey check the sidebar, it has that info, it's also against the rules to post without reading the sidebar."
From my point of view the below post is what escalated everything.
Read the sidebar. "Halp plase need to make munny kthxbai"
That's pretty insulting and not needed as it does not help anyone, that response would put anyone into defensive mode, no?
>"Halp plase need to make munny kthxbai
I think that's not nearly as insulting as someone who doesn't have the cognitional function to look at the sidebar materials, whom many people have contributed to dedicating their own time and effort into making available to everyone.
Now imagine this guy, who clearly stated his intentions of selling juice, who has already proven that hasn't even bothered with the sidebar materials, and intend to create liquids with poison for their friends to inhale. It's an incredible risk to himself, his friends, and general public outlook on vaping.
Safety is a top priority, without people who are able to take the extra time to read important information, the community is much more likely to get targeted. That's just my opinion.
I think another important point to add to /u/kirkt 's message here, don't add fuel to the flame. Just report and don't provoke. It's been awhile since I've seen the shitstorm that happened this morning.
what shitstorm?
We already removed it. Someone made a post asking questions that were all in the beginner's guide, then started insulting and fighting people who told him to read the sidebar.
Beginner's guides? I can understand if he hadn't read through all the resources in their entirety.
That dude (a) didn't read the "before posting please review", (b) didn't spend 5 seconds in the sidebar, (c) obviously never saw a search button before, and (d) called everyone an asshole who wasn't willing to hold his hand while skipping merrily down the DIY trail.
We don't need or want people like that around here. First offense - post removed without comment. Second offense: temporary ban. Third offense: Gone. And if at any point they start insulting the people who actually do contribute around here, there won't be any further warnings.
Fucking hell... Y'know interacting with people online in this sub may be a little more reassuring than reading it from the side bar.
Would you go on a forum for people who like to soup up their 'vettes and ask them if they know where the dipstick is? Because we get about 5-10 of those a day. THere is all kinds of intelligent discussion going on here all day long, and hundreds happy to participate in interaction.
Point taken man, I get its frustrating but I mean, its gonna happen, no need to get your knickers in a twist. Just my take anyway.
> Would you go on a forum for people who like to soup up their 'vettes and ask them if they know where the dipstick is?
Especially when there is a picture in the sidebar with a big, red, flashing arrow labeled 'This is the dipstick.' pointing at said dipstick. :P
Glad to see you going at it aggressively, posting to this forum should not be the first effort you do in DIY.
Why not?
It's hard to explain clearly, but basically;
- People have been submitting content for years to this sub.
- The mods have been collating that content for years, make it easy to access in the sidebar.
- If a question isn't answered in the sidebar, then it's usually answered by a quick search.
I've had a few people mention that;
First group: "This sub is pathetic, the amount of posts you get per day is low". "the community is one of the worst I've come across".
Second group: "The wealth of info in the sidebar meant that I didn't have to post, I was able to make decent juice just be reading!"
And this is entirely by design.
About 12-18 months ago, the sidebar had a bunch of links and recipes, but before we made a concerted effort, there wasn't really too many "guides" and tips. And while there were plenty of recipes, we were still getting dozens of posts a day about "what does TFA mean?" or "what percentage should I made my juice at?" or "check out my last capella order!" which would push down great posts that people actually put effort into.
Now, we basically have one rule. Read the side bar. I know it sounds cliche. We're not being elitist dicks here, we're honestly trying to help you, and help keep the sub clean.
Yes, I know some people come across as rude when they tell people to read the sidebar.
But you know what's even worse? The fact that someone came barging in, clicked past three suggestions to search/read the sidebar before posting, then posted a "pleeeeease help meeee".
What's even worse, is the abuse we receive when these low-effort, "Help me" posters almost always turn nasty. "kill yourself." "You're all cunts".
But you know what? I don't give a shit. These people would never in a million years actually contribute to the sub, and they can go fuck themselves.
/end.
Beautifully said.
The only thing I'd add is that when you have to suggest the sidebar for the 100th time, it's very difficult to not be nasty about it. It may be the first time you've told that person, but it's still the 100th time you've typed it.
Because it should be reading and studying. I read here and watched videos for weeks before I even attempted to order anything or ask advice. I guess we all learn differently but some people just come here with no knowledge and want everything spoon fed to them. That's not learning. That's laziness.
People who disagree with this probably don't know what it's like to clean up after people. Why should I have to see the same questions (that are answered in the sidebar) asked over and over and over and over. I'm sure the mods have other things in their lives and don't want to delete the same questions daily. Why do people find that hard to understand?
I can do that. But I don't like others replying to noobs without considering the repercussions of it.
Shit, if people are too lazy to read the sidebar, do you really want them playing with nicotine and selling shit to others?
The #1 people come here is NOT to save money, it's to MAKE money. That's the dream.
Agree, at least typically the people that ask those kinds of questions and can't be bothered to read anything before hand. Almost all of them have quick cash dreams...
Almost everyone who says they came to save money still dreams of making profits.
I just want to curb people for 5 fscking seconds and have them read the data there.
When I shit on a Redditor, I always check their history first. If they've been around 3 years, I am shitting on them for not reading the sidebar -- doesn't matter WHAT sub it is.
I'll listen to /u/kirkt and just click report, but crap it spoils my mood that I can't leave a steamer in their vapehole.
Not saying it is excusable for this reason, but: I think a lot of people fail to realize there is a side bar with a bunch of info. I primarily browse via a mobile app. Both Reddit blue and bacon reader, don't show the sidebar unless you hit the menu button.
98% of my browsing is via a mobile app and for a long time I simply didn't get it! I would imagine a lot of these new posters are having a similar experience.
I have to say, this seems to be a robust community, but perhaps not Reddit's friendliest.
This sub is my first real experience with Reddit. I only browse on mobile. I googled "what is a sidebar Reddit" and was able to figure it out. If you are lucky enough to notice there is a "Desktop Site" button it suddenly makes sense why everybody is doing this. -------->
There's really no excuse besides laziness not to at least LOOK for this sidebar thing everyone is talking about in every post.
Oh for sure. I'm not arguing that it's impossible to figure out. I did.
The point I was trying to make is that I understand why people don't read the sidebar, at least at first. Of course this sub and others like it will be frequented by those that are not interested in contributing, but rather to benefit from other people's research.
I agree, as you said, at first. But after they ask a question and get told to read the sidebar their follow up question should be: what's a sidebar?, how do I see the sidebar?, etc.
I guarantee no one will shit on them for asking this type of question. I wish there was a sticky post that said "If you are on mobile..... Read this first", but some people probably wouldn't read that either.
I am so glad you mods put in the work you do, sifting through the shitposts sounds downright awful. If someone responds to advice by calling people assholes, even if the advice is a simple "read the damn sidebar," that person might not be at the level of maturity needed to pursue this as a profession. Hell i just do this as a hobby, this was the first sub that got me looking at reddit at all, and even I knew to look over there on the right before posting bullshit. Big ups to you all
I agree. Maybe there needs to be a daily questions thread where you can ask all the stupid things you want? At least it would be in one place
You got it boss man.
At one point I would have something to say along the lines of "everyone was a noob once" or "think of the mobile users" or something like that, but no, fuck that. I'm a mobile user, that's just how I prefer to use reddit, but I've read that sidebar in its entirety several times via mobile. Also if people don't have the common courtesy to check the sidebar when coming to a new sub, that's just disrespectful. I want to say it was /u/skiddlzninja that suggested this sub go private (I could be wrong, I'm probably wrong, that was a while ago) and maybe that wouldn't be such a bad idea. My initial reaction to that was that potential quality members could miss out on the community, but it's not like people couldn't be invited in or something like that and it would for sure cut down on the same questions being asked 30 times a day, thus making mods and admins happier considering they have better things to do. But, not my sub, not my call.
Just wanted to say thank you from the bottom of my heart mods and awesome people in this forum, I stalked for probably 6 months absorbing everything I could read here and getting my financials together to order. I feel like i know y'all like friends and I will be eternally grateful for this community. Knowledge is power and power to the people. Love y'all (not in a weird way you sick fucks) and again thank you all. Peace.
Awesome! Glad you are finding what you want here.
What's the best thing you've mixed so far?
The vicious vanilla for sure but the only other things I have mixed is mustard milk, nana cream, and nana's creamy mustard milk a fizzmustard tribute I posted about 6 months ago where I used nana cream as a flavor base in place of straight strawberry(tfa) and its pretty good imho.
I'm starting to think we need a bot.
The last one got fucked to death. You may have heard of it.
The flair your post bot? That w one was amusing just to see how many down votes it could get.
I was just wondering yesterday what happened to the flairbot. I'm glad it's dead.
I came to this sub 2.5 years ago or so when I had the thought of making my own juice. It took me about five minutes to find out where to find what I needed to do exactly that.
My home brew was on or above the level of the local house juice for the first two years which was good enough for me.
Then I found the Nanner clone by p2501 and my eyes were opened again.
I wish I had the time to dedicate to making my own exciting mixes to share with the world. Maybe I'll have a eureka moment in the future but for now I'm happy looking around and tweaking things others have done.
I'm standing on the shoulders of giants.
And for what it's worth, I'm in it to make money by saving money spent on juice I can easily make myself. I'm not interested in adding the liability involved with marketing consumables.
This should probably be a rule. Where could we stick such a thing to make sure everyone reads it after it gets buried in a day or two... you know, for the newer folks?
*sorry, meant to put an /s
Can I have your adopted babies? <3
I'm not entirely sure what to make of that comment.
Can i have your babies, then?
