Vaping Cretins
submitted over 9 years ago by phantom240Pâtissier

My friend's coworker hit us up to make some juice for him, having tasted a batch my friend had. He asked if we could do "an extra flavor shot" for him. I said no, that's an awful idea. Of course, his local shop "does it for him all the time", so I figured what the hell, the customer is always right, right? So I increased all of the flavorings in one of my personal recipes all 10% across the board (1% became 1.1%, 2% became 2.2%, etc. The flavor used most in this one is CAP Glazed Donut at 3%). He gets the juice, which has had no time to steep (this juice has a minimum 5 day steep time, because of the inherent potency of cinnamon flavors), and complains that the "cinnamon is too harsh".

Of course it is, ya fuckin twat. I told you not to fuck with my recipe and give it a week to steep.

Goddamn shitty B&M shops fucking up uninformed vapers.

Just had to rant about that.

Send him back to the B&M for some more crap sauce. Sounds like he doesn't deserve to vape your juice.

It's cool. The few dollars I made off of that juice helped pay for all the supplies needed to build more box mods. Juice has a good profit margin, but I love building box mods.Of course, I know there are people out there who do it much better, but there are a couple other locals that build them as well, and they're garbage. Solder joints lookin' like a flux core MIG welder, loose sleds, etc. I did these two this weekend for two local customers. 18650 Series and 26650 Series

Love that 18650 box, very nice work!

Thanks, that one was an absolute nightmare to build. Every single component had to be modified to get everything to fit. It was so satisfying though, because it is so small, yet packs a huge punch with a good set of batteries.

Dat finish tho

The one I'm building for my personal use, I'm polishing to a mirror finish. Going all the way up to 3000 grit before using a bench mounted buffer and jeweler's rouge to bring a flawless shine. After building this one, I fell in love. It is a perfect size and weight. The batteries fit with zero extra space. I actually had to use a belt sander to get the sled to sit a cunt hair lower in the box in order to add the ribbon to make changing batteries a breeze.

I dunno how I'm gonna keep it from getting scratched though.

Clean AF. What do you charge?

by phantom240over 9 years agoPâtissier

The hammmond boxes, we sell locally for roughly $100, give or take, depending on what specs. The one pictured would be a $100 box. 18650 versions are $10 cheaper. Adding a master on/off switch, illuminated firing button, low profile 510 connector, voltmeter, etc. all come at different extra charges. The silver one would run $120 as shown due to the immense amount of work involved modifying everything to fit, and the few small special touches here and there that really set it off we toyed around with a master on/off switch for this one, but the customer said not to bother, so we didn't. Of course, batteries and atties are not included.

Your mods look very nice. It's great to see you take so much pride in your work.

Thank you. I'm no master of the art, but I always try to produce something I can be proud of.

holy fuck those look nice. i'd give my left nut for a 26650 parallel tho.

I build them in parallel as well. I actually prefer them like that, but nothing advertises quite like ripping a huge cloud.

My trick to upping a flavor shot is to reduce it by 5%. Saves me a few pennies and they have no idea anyway.

Hahahaha no way. Less is more, right?

This made me laugh harder than it should have, I'm fairly new to DIY and my god even I know when I recipe has been balanced, do. Not. Fuck. With. It.

by phantom240over 9 years agoPâtissier

I mean, if he had vaped an entire bottle of it before and said, yeah it needs a bit more flavor, I'd be okay with that. I realize all equipment performs differently. What tastes good on my build might be weak or super potent on another rig. However, I've gotten universal positive feedback for this one recipe I have, and so yeah, don't fuck with it lol

Just like I mixed up a good tropical blend it fine on my dripper tasted great, was smooth as hell, all was good! (I always try juices on my dripper because it's easier) then put it in my Atlantis 2.0 and had a hell of a throat hit! But yes, once a flavor is good all around, keep it how it is lol

I hate all flavor shots , it's just a bad idea all around especially for people who have never sampled the juice .

Juices should come as good as you can make them, period . Flavor shots are just extra unneeded $$ makers for vendors.

This is something I have wondered about...not having started to mix yet but learning from you guys....you all say more flavouring = muted flavour often...so I wonder...why the heck do they offer this "flavour shot" thing?? Just to make more money? Their juice sucks to begin with? They have no pride or belief in their recipe? Its been stumping me why its even offered.

Makes sense :)

by surfishermanover 9 years ago

I think your reading it wrong , there is no doubt it's just to make extra money but some people seem to like extra flavor shots especially the ones who have tried the flavor without flavor shots and just wants a little more kick if reordering .

Every juice i have tried WITHOUT flavor shots has been plenty tasty for me , at one time a vendor added two extra flavor shots by mistake because i didn't want them .

Well i could not tell any difference from the first juice i got from them with no flavor shots so who knows.

Yes, many people do seem to say too much of certain flavors can negatively effect a mix but i am not experienced enough to know for sure .

They know a lot more than i do though so i don't doubt them .

Weeell, when it comes to the DIY community, flavor shots obviously don't exists, for good reason. But take something like bottom shelf liquids like mt Baker of vape wild (well, never actually tried VW) and they try to get by with as little as possible. I could barely taste a BB custard of Mt Baker's, so I imagine a flavor shot would've been nice. But yeah, it's just for $$

Agree. If its shit to begin with, hopefully it can only get better by adding more flavour (or sweetener). So appealing to the masses who just want a "cheap" juice, you can add a flavour shot and make it semi decent but now charge more. :)

In my early quit-smoking days, I automatically went for the EXTRA FLAVA $HOTZ!!! option with all my mixed-to-order juices if they were offered, because my tastebuds were cold and dead inside, so I didn't trust them to pick up on the magic subtleties of e-juice. Plus my rig was totally starter quality.

I was all high-nic and big-flavor and GO GO GO! I was trying to quit smoking in the most aggressive and novel way possible. I needed that level of distraction, and, honestly, I think it went a long way toward getting me there.

That said, it was the wrong way. I can't even stomach some of my early favorites now. So, next time your friends ask for flavor shots, nod, smile, and make your recipes the way they're supposed to be made. They'll never be the wiser, and, in the end, they'll taste things the way they're supposed to be tasted. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1M0eMkcc91E

In the future, don't add additional flavoring to "extra shot" juice. Bump up the price and at the very most put a couple drops of ethyl maltol. Allow the placebo effect to give him all the bonus flavor he desires.

It's the vapers not the shops

1 points

by Josher61over 9 years ago

But don't you think what they are really asking for, if they are used to commercial "premium" juices, is more sweetener really? And seriously, I don't mix yet, Im learning, but one reason Im going to DIY is to get away from all these extra "flavour/sweetened" juices.

On the topic of overly sweet juices, have you ever tried Pancake Man? Shit is gross. It is supposed to be pancakes with strawberries, but all I tasted was a mild flapjack flavor with a truckload of cane syrup on top. I'm fairly certain it was the stuff of Wilford Brimley's nightmares.

by Josher61over 9 years ago

Havent tried it but have heard that same assessment for sure. Im a Canadian and I loved a custard line from up here, its so sweet though. Back when I could barely taste, and still cant very well, just getting my taste buds back, I loved it so much. Its as if all I could taste was sweeteners back then. I vaped some today and thought wow that's so sweet. Im looking forward to playing around and making stuff that's tastes sweet (by combining flavours) without it just being straight sweetener added. :) I hope anyway!

SO many people in the area where I live go fucking nuts over the One Hit Wonder shit. It's fucking horrible.

1 points

by phantom240over 9 years agoPâtissier

I disagree. Most vapers don't DIY, and therefore don't know the delicate nature of aroma volatiles and how they should be balanced to create a good juice. If a shop is willing to add extra flavor, then it should be assumed that at least one of these is true:

  • The shop is incompetent at mixing, and either cannot create a proper mix or disregards the aforementioned delicate nature of flavors
  • The shop is swindling uninformed customers by upselling unnecessary additional flavor (assuming the flavor is actually good)

Again, not being a mixer, but I pretty much agree, without the knowledge to back myself up :) To me its like cooking, or mixing a drink: an extra 2 ozs of rum or whatever wont make that drink taste better, it will just overpower the recipe of whatever the drink was that was being prepared.

1 points

by phantom240over 9 years agoPâtissier

That's actually a pretty good analogy.

How much do you sell the juice for? I sell my friends juice for usually $4-5/6-7/10 for a 30/60/100ml, but I never know if I'm being stingy or generous

1 points

by phantom240over 9 years agoPâtissier

To friends, $5 per 30mls, which covers my cost, plus a little extra to invest into new products to experiment with. To acquaintances and friends of friends, anywhere from $7-10 per 30mls because they usually want something stupid that I have to do a bit of trial and error (See: Waste) before I come up with something that fits their description.

> Of course it is, ya fuckin twat

Lol dude I can't count the number of times I've wanted to tell someone that (or something similar).

I have no idea where this idea of flavor shots came from but it's such a bad one. Only option I think people should have is w/ or w/o sweetener, and really you shouldn't even need that option if you make your liquid right.

A little sucralose does change some of the properties of the vape, though. I find when I add it to some of my juices, the flavor tends to hang around on my tongue for a bit of time after exhaling. It's a nice thing to have sometimes.

1 points

by CheebaSteebaover 9 years agoFrugivore

Yeah a touch of sucralose can be nice or even essential. I have a bit of a sensitivity so I will always opt out if I have the option. I do have a recipe or two that I make where the vape just falls flat without it so I have to suck it up for a few days lol
