First things first, I've been a lurker around here for a while so I'm fully aware how hard I'll get raped if I didn't do my research before asking, so yes I've used the sidebar/etc, googled to kingdom come and although I found one slightly interesting post it didn't exactly address what I'm curious about. My research led me to get my head around the ''olfactory sense'' and I believe I understand how this works, however this doesn't answer the specific question I have.
So with the niceties out of the way, I'd love to know if anyone has discovered a way of controlling which flavour notes you get on inhale/exhale. I've whipped up countless mixes and I always notice that for example, if I mix a fruit+cream type recipe the fruit will always be mainly on the inhale and cream mainly on the exhale. I've tried everything I can think of in order to affect this, but any juice that is still tasty will remain with this fruit inhale/ cream exhale. I would love to be able to make a complex cream inhale with a fruity exhale... has anyone found a way to do this, without making the juice perfumey/horrible? (Same thing applies to most other juice combos, not just the fruit/cream example I've given)

There are fixatives used in perfumery and the flavor industry to control the flavor profile. For example, one hated aroma (Patchouli) is actually used as a fixative for other flavors in very small concentrations. Patchouli works beautifully with vanilla to bring the flavor out longer -- maybe on the exhale versus the inhale.
There's no easy way to do this with vaping because we just don't know what is in our concentrates, and different AVCs react differently to the presence of different fixatives. If a juice mixer creates a different inhale/exhale, it's always from luck or serendipity.
Some of the more common fixatives aren't vape friendly -- gum arabic is a popular one in foods and drinks but we don't want to vape it.
Certain sweeteners can also work as a fixative for certain AVCs -- but again without knowing what the AVC composition is, a DIY mixer can only guess based on previous results.
Coumarin, loosely related to the vanilla aroma, is a popular fixative used for certain AVCs but in high concentration tastes like the dentist's office. While coumarin is used in flavor concentrates even today, it is hepatoxic in animals for sure, and may be carcinogenic (not proven).
Certain alcohols can also work as fixatives, notably cinnamic alcohol.

That was a great read and got me curious... seems I have a lot more reading to do. One thing I've gleaned from your post is that I quite like the idea of sweetener - or sweetness - controlling the inhale/exhale. Makes logical sense that, in the fruit/cream example, the fruit will be generally more sour or earthy, while the cream will contain more sweetness... hence the cream will be the exhale. I see the issue though, adding sweetener to mix (whatever the sweetener might be); one can't know which flavourings the sweetener will affect more - I belive this is what you mean by ''but again without knowing what the AVC composition is, a DIY mixer can only guess based on previous results''.
So hmm. You've made me even more intrigued since I never though about using sweetener, off to the mixing station I go.

Him and skittlz talk a little bit about this subject in regards to how certain flavor molecules are smaller and more volatile (strawberry/fruits) and are generally tasted on the inhale while molecules used for creams cakes and custards are larger and tasted on exhale. Skittlz might even give you a hint as to how expert mixers use large flavor/perfume compounds to carry a lighter one. Or he's just lying.
Randomly fell on this thread. Doesn't exactly answer,but wanted to note that I recently started adding NN's Patchouly Vanilla to my Vanilla Custard recipe and had a wow moment. The flavoring is definitively not a standalone for most, but when blended it really sweetens the mix and enhances both the vanilla and custrard notes. We're talking .5% makes the VC POP! Don't know if this is a product of whats being talked about here or not.

Jake over at Nude Nicotine decided to play fancy pants without openly admitting it when he released this vanilla, which is absolutely a must-have vanilla not just for the flavor, but for its unique blend of volatile compounds and the fixative qualities of patchouli.

Honestly, I barely taste anything when I inhale, and I taste everything when I exhale. I think these words are used for marketing, so companies can make their simple juices sound more complex. Very pretentious in my opinion.
Me too. I taste on the exhale only. I don't believe anyone tastes on the inhale.
We can feel the senses of sweet, sour, bitter, salty and umami anytime on our tongues (on "inhale", included), but for actual TASTE, we taste when exhaling through our noses.
As /u/noamtheostrich said: "on the inhale" and "on the exhale" are bullshit marketing terms juice labels use to make their descriptions sound more appealing to regular consumers.
I implore anyone (DIY juicer or regular vaper) to try and distinguish any flavors in their juices merely on the inhale. Nigh impossible, I reckon. Whenever I see anyone describing their mix with "on the inhale" and "on the exhale", I trust their judgement on taste less-so.
Even if there is a detectable difference, it is almost certainly more related to marketing than formulation.
I doubt many (if any) companies are putting effort into designing recipes to control when each flavor presents. Instead, they make a recipe, taste it, and write the description based on when they feel each component becomes apparent.
If you like lychee, that one carries very well through the exhale with creams. It does have a bit of that florally note though which kind of goes against your intentions. I found it nice though in an "exotic custard" recipe to have something other than the creaminess coming through on the exhale.
