Caramel custard tastes like dumpster juice. Looking for suggestion to improve it.

Hi all, I did a simple search but most threads have not covered this. I recently made my own caramel custard recipe. Based on the percentages, things seem to be in place. But I took a puff of it immediately after making it and it was horrid. Like a mixture of rotten egg and garbage juice. Perhaps I just need to steep it for a long period of time, or maybe someone could chime in and see how I can make this taste great without waiting 3 months.

Off the top of my head, I'm thinking maybe some Capella French Vanilla or TFA Vanilla Swirl could help. Maybe 1% of TFA Vanilla Swirl, too.

Here is my recipe:

Capella Vanilla Custard - 5%
TFA Caramel OG - 3%
Flavor West Caramel Candy - 2%
TFA Sweet Cream - 2%

made it a few weeks ago subbing fw caramel candy in place of tfa. despite it being a little rich from the caramel, it was a pretty decent shake and vape.

are there any juices you do like with your setup outside of DIY? if not, what's your setup? I'm a pretty boring with my gear. I use the same build with the same mod/atty 24/7/365, so I can normally tell wtf is going on if a juice tastes off. Most of the time for me the reason is I'm dehydrated, just consumed something with sugar alcohol, or my cotton needs to be changed.

All I have right now is an aspire Cleito. I've got another tank and an rda on order though, so I'm going to have a clearer picture soon on what the problem is

I had this same problem and I fixed it. The problem was that custard sucked with caramels. I switched it out for CAP Buttercream. Seriously, try it. Good right away, better and better as the steep magic happens.

Try removing sweet cream. Sometimes, when combined improperly, it tastes like sour milk to me, and sour and rotting dairy is often a large component of "dumpster" odor.

I think the sweet cream helps to alleviate the "dumpster" odor which is coming from the caramel.

Yes, you need to steep it.

He says not a shake and vape at all, uses a few similar flavors. Overnight MIGHT be enough but I'd say 3-4 days.

I remembered something Bombies once said about making juice once. He said if the juice passed the taste test without pre-steeping, that's the sign of a great juice. Just wondering if that's actually possible, not just with fruits, but custards and creams too.

Ever try Bombies' eliquids? None of them are custardy. Nana Cream maybe but nothing like a custard in any of his flavor profiles.

Custards involve heavy molecules and some nasty smelling top notes. Heavy molecules need to homogenize, rancid top notes need to escape the solution.

Both require time.

Fair enough. I'll steep it for a full week and report back. Call me stubborn but I feel like there's a way to mask the rancid notes and make a decent juice.

I am currently working on more custards to sit next to my Strawberry Madness flavor. Blueberry and Blackberry were fairy simple to work with, but when I wandered in Caramel Custard it was much more difficult. I still don't have anything sell-able. Personally, I think that the finding the right caramel flavors to work with are the problem. It seems that Caramel doesn't lend itself well to a custard base. As for steeping, I always say one week minimum for custards of any kind.

Mom & Pop Vapor Shop Caramel - I won a $75 credit so I used it on concentrates and their caramel blends nicely with custard. I have a couple gals who love the caramel custard juice I make for them with it. I like it but not as much as they do. It's a different kind of caramel, has a maple note to it.

FLV Caramel and Butterscotch both have very beautiful top notes at low percentages. I'd say back off the TFA caramel and the FW Caramel down to lower percentages and throw in 0.25-0.5% of both FLV's Caramel and butterscotch or just the caramel and you may be able to get some better forming top notes.

I'm not a fan of TFA's caramel OG because of the corn syrup in it.

I'd remove the caramel candy and sweet cream and add some tfa french vanilla creme and a little tfa sweetener. Your two base flavors are yummy together

TFA Vanilla Custard works a lot better with caramel for whatever reason. I did the same thing originally, tried CAPs and it just didnt work out well. The sweet cream really helps hide any strange after tastes that Caramel brings a long. In my recipe I use it at 3%.

I've never had FW Caramel Candy. That may be the trouble maker here. Try what you have without the caramel candy and then increase the TFA Caramel to either 4-5% and see if it tastes better. If you taste any "off" flavor, then increase the sweet cream slightly. Good luck!

Thanks. For some reason, I thought CAP Vanilla Custard's richness might work here. I honestly believe it just needs to taste, because it smells fucking amazing. I'll report back in a week and see if it changes.
