What IS Koolada?
submitted over 9 years ago by jettscythe

I decided to go ahead and take a look at TFA's spec sheet and print off some of what I think could be useful. If you take a look at Koolada 10% you'll see it's 90.0% propylene glycol and 10% (Trade secret) BUT it has the CAS # listed. Is this just to confuse stupid/lazy people? Searching the CAS # comes back as N-Ethyl-2-isopropyl-5-methylcyclohexanecarboxamide & on thegoodscents if you search it, on the bottom of the page there's a supplier for "Koolada W3"... So either I'm an idiot or your welcome... I'm just as curious as the next guy. If I can't get any feedback I'll just buy some and dilute in Pg and go from there.

None of TFA's trade secret ingredients are a secret because they always list CAS.

Koolada is just the trade name for menthyl methyl lactate. Readily available in generic form nowadays, I'm sure it was all the rage when they first released it!

Believe it's made by reacting menthol with methyl lactate (synthetic form of ethyl lactate which is used in many dairy flavorings).

Good to know. I'll be printing off some more goodies for sure. Some of the mixes are hard to understand... Take a look at the Acai berry SDS if you get the chance. I can't seem to find any info & it just states "mixture of volatile aromatic compounds"

Acai is all ethyl butyrate and a tiny hint of many "fruity" volatile top notes.

Lol I'm at the shop today doing pre-spring inventory. It sucks.

It is that time isn't, my inventory is coming up in March too. I wonder how many mixers are also inventory managers?

I'm the boss, but some of my shops are mostly part time gigs for anyone who works there, so I'm the one in charge of making sure we're ready for busy season. It's an annoyance, but if I get it done in March, I can ignore it for the rest of the year until Christmas, lol.

If you buy it from TFA , It's already diluted to 10% as you stated and it's potent . It gives the cooling effect without the menthol taste . Use is low percentage to start about 0.3% to 1%.

I could remember trying something as a kid and then trying koolada flavoring and getting a little nostalgic. Pretty sure this was what I was remembering.

Now I'm curious: Has anybody tried adding this to a drink? I bet it'd make some killer mixed drinks. I'm sure you could but how much to add?

I might start at a couple drops per shot.

Not a problem, I thought It would be more informative than me.

Now if someone asks this question, you're armed to answer it ;)

To prevent this myth from spreading, I'll go ahead and give you the spoiler here: No.

It doesn't have any kind of weird chemical reaction on nicotine. The myth is spread by the fact that Koolada drastically altars the throat hit. For people who vape for a throat hit, Koolada will disappoint. For everyone else it is a nice way to get a cool vape, without menthol flavor.

Read this: http://perfumerflavorist.texterity.com/perfumerflavorist/march_2014/MobilePagedReplica.action?pg=36#pg36

It has a lot of chem involved so skip the big stuff but all interesting history into the Koolada birth.
