DIY Flavors
submitted over 9 years ago by LikeTwelveJews

So, one thing led to another last night and I found myself in an argument with a guy who owns a juice company on social media. Not something I'm proud of, or would usually do. The guy probably has about as many customers as a local vape shop in a decently populated area near you.

The argument was about the cost of manufacturing and how I believe some juice companies just might be getting the best of customers. But the part of the argument that really bothered me, is the guy claimed the juice ingredients flavors, Nic, and VG/PG - cost WELL over 3-5 dollars a bottle for him to make.

He then processed to tell me TFA and FW were "bottom barrel flavors" and CAP was "ok". He also claimed good nic is close to $400 dollars a gallon???

I've been DIY for less than 6 months, and I'll admit I haven't been in the game for a very long time. MY question is: Is this guy full of shit, or are the Large juice companies using better ingredients which contributes to their high costs?

It might cost him well over 3-5 dollars a bottle to make a bottle of juice. If you include employee time, manufacturing costs, and silly designed bottles and other packaging.

Does that make his juice any good? No. It could be great juice, or mustard milk might blow it out of the water.

The problem is his elitist attitude.

It's juice that will be gone in a couple days to a week. I don't need cum extracted from the balls of virgins in a secret valley of the himalayas. I need something that tastes decent and gives me nicotine. Luckily we have this subreddit and all the great mixers who share their recipes.

We're not including those. He literally said:

>the guy claimed** the juice ingredients flavors, Nic, and VG/PG** - cost WELL over 3-5 dollars a bottle for him to make.

So no - no E-Liquid vendor is paying that much for only ingredients with the goal of maximizing profitability. He's just another shmuck trying to dupe people by acting like everyone is missing out on his "premium" ingredients, by not paying the $25/bottle price tag. Once you get a good clone of some of these "Premium" E-Liquids, you start to feel bad for people who are getting jacked out of their money when they see a glass bottle of the same shit that we make for pennies.

I'm really glad I DIY (DIM?).

The short answer is yeah, he's full of shit.

I guess if you use glass bottles, and really exotic flavors (they would have to be outrageously expensive), and straight overpaid for nicotine you could have a legitimate claim that ingredients cost $3-5. In reality, this doesn't happen.

$400/gallon means he's buying PURE nicotine. I buy 60mg/ml, and I use less than 2ml for a 30ml batch at 3mg. A gallon of PURE nicotine could provide for a massive amount of product.

Since you're in the DIY forum, you probably know how cheap it is to make your own e-liquid. I know for me personally I don't buy my supplies in MASS quantities from a wholesaler, as a shop would, and my prices are easily less than $1/30 ml bottle. The most expensive part is the bottle.

Ultimately, no shop owner in his right mind is going to tell you the truth that he's selling 30ml's for $25 when his actual material costs are $0.25.

$400 a gallon isn't out of the realm of possibility, especially if hes just buying a gallon at a time and not wholesale. Nude nicotine charges $360 a gallon + shipping, carolina xtract would be even more. at 3mg that's like 10 cents per 30ml, at 24mg its about 75 cents. you arent getting pure (~1000mg/ml) for $400 a gallon. Not saying he's right that it costs him well over $3-5 a bottle, but the $400 a gallon figure isn't far off.

edit: didn't mention that's the price for 100mg

I never said $400/gallon was fictitious, did I? But surely you must realize how many bottles you could get out of a GALLON of pure nicotine, right? He's either lying about this $3-5/bottle ingredient cost, or he's buying flavorings that are ridiculously expensive to the point where he isn't maximizing profit, which as you might fathom is the entire point of opening a store. I think it's safe to assume the former.

RTS Vapes sells a gallon of 100 mg/mL nicotine for $180. It's the nicotine I use (but I only buy 250 mL bottles, which mixing at 1-3 mg/mL lasts me well over a year) and I have no complaints, there is barely any difference in taste between 0 mg/mL juice and 12 mg/mL juice (which is what I vaped when I first started mixing my own juice). 3 mg/mL and 0 mg/mL are indistinguishable.

You have to remember that he doesn't get to reuse bottles, and he probably has professional labels. The packaging costs for commercial juices is probably about half the damn cost, as with most industries.

This is still excluding things like traditional overhead, storage, temperature control in the facility, clean room costs, labor for mixing / repacking, and a bunch of other stuff that you don't see per bottle necessarily. Of course, all of that is assuming he's not making it in his bathtub...

Hey, Dr. Crimmys did it - that turned out perfectly fine.

I work in a manufacturing plant for a fortune 500 company and packaging usually ends up costing more than the actual product.

What's wrong with manufacturing your juice in the bathtub( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I guess nothing, as long as you would eat off of your bathtub too.

He is correct about the nic if you buy STRAIGHT nic but a gallon of nic would last you ages.

by abdadaover 9 years agoI will rip you a new one if you don't use the sidebar & search.

My DIY bottles cost me about $3.50-$4.50 per bottle without labor costs involved.

My nicotine is $170 per liter -- $400 a gallon is close.

My flavorings cost anywhere from $40-80 per 30ml.

He's correct, for the product he's selling.

The number of vendors offering this level of ingredients is small. Maybe 5 known brands?

Are these the same ingredients used by the guys like Suicide Bunny, Cuttwood, etc.?

I was wondering why my DIY was lacking.

No. They just use a lot of sweeteners, lol.

So who actually uses these ingredients, why, and where can I find them?

Ok, I have to ask where I can get my hands on some of these pricey concentrates. Do tell.

MedicineFlower.com is the most popular. I also buy from some HFC CO2 extractors who don't sell on the web.

There are a few flavor vendors who don't sell online because they're B2B focused.

I was thinking MF may be in the list but HFC CO2 is new to me. Thanks!

Have you ever tried the stuff from http://craveessence.com? I'm not sure if they're selling flavoring anymore --- but they're decent EA extracts. I've tried about half of their line. Their juice mixes aren't anything amazing though.

$39 for 30ml of flavor? I'm curious. What justifies the price? Are these flavor that much better than TFA, et. al.?

I was reading their site and I think I answered my own question. It looks like they are extracting flavor from real ingredients. That's a big plus compared to flavors which are created in a lab. I got into DIY so I could control exactly what I'm putting in my lungs. I may have to try this stuff out. I'm willing to pay a bit more to get better/healthier ingredients.

What kind of bottles are you using?

LDPE. I meant the contents of the bottle are $3.50-$4.50 in just diluent, nic and flavor costs.

40-80$ for 30ml... Damn.. I thought 10$ for 10ml was crazy xD And well, good thing I vape under 1mg and don't sell my juice cause that nic price is crazy too!

I'm not sure how OP and the juice vendor first started their conversation, but when it comes to calling a business out on their approximate margin of profit, I veer to keep those words to myself. Business is about making profit and really, there's nothing wrong, business-wise, about shops selling juice for the price that they are. We, as DIY Juice hobbyists, know really how much it costs to make a bottle of juice, but I'd be careful to call a business out on how much their markup is, especially on social media. Vapers are willing to pay certain prices for juice, so it's not really the business' fault for selling juice at those prices.

I just keeping making my own liquids, and sometimes give it away or sell it really cheap to friends/acquaintances. That's my way of spreading a similar message, and one that may be less abrasive and perhaps less damaging to other people's livelihood.

Or am I being too "understanding" of the business-owners? I, myself, was a small business owner in the past, so I guess I have a bit more of a soft-spot for them...
