So someone asked me recently if it's okay to vape a peanut butter juice I'd made if they have a peanut allergy. The juice has Capella and Flavorah peanut butter. Capella's is fine based on the info on their website, but couldn't find that info on Flavorah's MSDS for that flavour.
They emailed me back to confirm that their peanut butter flavour does very much contain real peanuts and should NOT be consumed by anyone with a peanut allergy. Apologies if this is old news, but I didn't know and I couldn't find that information without contacting them, so just a heads up on the off chance you didn't know or wanted to know.
Whoever sent you that was either covering their butt, or just doesn't know what they are talking about, or possibly you misinterpreted the mail.
First of all, there is no peanut in peanut flavoring. None. These are flavor compounds made by a flavoring company from base chemicals and purchased in bulk by Capella. Most buy from Molecule Labs, it's possible Capella mixes their own, but I seriously doubt it. If they do mix their own, they don't start with peanuts.
Secondly, peanut allergies are caused by proteins called Ara h 1, Ara h 2, and Ara h 3. Proteins are pretty hard to get into aerosol form, and they would char and be unbearable on your coil, think clumps of rancid steak or expired tofu. If you did manage to vape proteins, your problems would be as, if not more severe than someone with a peanut allergy.
In short, there is nothing that could cause a peanut allergy in the flavors you mention - proteins on your coil would be very apparent.
Do what's right for you and your level of comfort, but no one's in danger of triggering a peanut allergy from peanut flavoring.
Hey /u/queutue, here's a copy and paste from the email:
========================== Hi Nathan,
Thank you for your question.
Flavorah peanut butter flavoring is a natural and artificial flavor so YES, it does very much contain real peanuts and should NOT be consumed by anyone with a peanut allergy.
Ingredients are listed in the MS/DS. Please let me know if I can help with anything else.
Thank you,
Aaron
I hear what you're saying, but if the vendor tells me it contains trace elements of peanut, I'm not going to disbelieve them. I emailed them asking if they'd update the product listing or the MSDS, and they've told me they will. No reason to disbelieve them. They seem pretty on the ball.
I withdraw my insinuation you may be illiterate. :)
This is a guy covering his butt, since the person may vape and then eat a Reeses peanut butter cup. Better to lose the business to those who are allergic than be on the hook for events they can't control.
Juice isn't just vaped, you're bound to get some on your hands at some point. I have no idea if Flavorah uses chemicals extracted from peanuts or not or if the flavoring would countain enough protein to trigger a reaction with anyone, but this is just something to keep in mind. The trace amounts (if any) in the flavoring may not be enough for it to taste like shit but enough to be a cause for concern if a person with an allergy comes in contact with it?
"It does very much contain real peanuts" does sound stupid though.
Point of clarification, our Peanut Butter flavor contains natural and artificial peanut flavors= possibility of an allergy.
An MSDS is not a good place to look for allergy information. It is mostly information relevant to the shipping and use of the product, with an emphasis on hazardous chemicals etc. Allergies are outside the scope of that, but are covered by rules about accurate and explicit labeling of food products and good manufacturing practice.
> Ingredients are listed in the MS/DS
Hey /u/flavorah, sorry for the late reply, I've just seen your post there now.
I didn't realise the MSDS wasn't the right place to look. I did check the flavour listing (description, reviews, more details tabs) and that information wasn't listed there. The safety and about links also didn't list it, and the email referred me to the MSDS which I checked, and also the GCMS.
That information isn't anywhere on the Flavorah website. It would be useful to have somewhere. I also checked the bottle label, it's not there either.
I'm not sure what the comments about "accurate and explicit labeling of food products and good manufacturing practice" are referring to, but anyone using that product can only go on the available information the manufacturer provides, and at the moment, that information isn't available without some digging.
If there is a better place to find it and I've made a mistake, please let me know and I'll look in the right place in future, but the Flavorah website doesn't list it anywhere that I've checked or been directed to.
I have a friend with a pretty decent nut allergy who asked me to make him a juice. I offerd him some milk and honey that i made a while back. He just smelled it and said "nope, smells like death" I was like huuh?.. Ooh fuck there's tfa peanut butter and hazelnut in it... omg are you gonna die?! He says "Nah, synthetics are fine it's just that it smells like death, my body would never allow me to inhale that stuff"
thanks man! I won't vape peanut juices around friends with allergies. You may have saved a life!
Capella Peanut Butter is fine - they rate it okay for anyone with a nut allergy, so if you know anyone with an allergy that really wants to vape peanut butter flavour, theirs is good to go, based on this information here
Not sure about TFA, but I'm really grateful to Flavorah for being so clear about it when asked. I'd prefer bad news about a juice I'd made rather than someone finding themselves in trouble after vaping that concentrate because the information wasn't there. Just wish it was more clear on the MSDS - "DO NOT VAPE IF YOU HAVE A PEANUT ALLERGY"
