Erythritol as an alternative sweetner?
submitted over 9 years ago by br4d24

Hello! I was looking at the side of a Vitamin water and noticed that they use a chemical called Erythritol. After some research i discovered that it is a sugar alcohol and is used mainly to replace sugars. Has anyone used this as sweetner for juice? Does anyone know if there are any negative side effects from vaping this stuff? I know sucralose isnt the greatest to vape... and EM doesnt give the type of sweetness i am looking for... so im hoping to find something else that works and is relatively safe.

Found this thread about it, doesnt really give me much answers though: https://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/threads/erythritol-as-a-sweetener-in-liquids.482052/page-2

I've tested it -- it gunks way worse than sucralose. I think because it's heat stable and a heavier compound, it just likes to crust coils.

Look into Open Source Vapor's reb-A sweetener. Also a gunker but natural.

OSV uses a better Reb-A than the stuff you typically buy for coffee. The normal stuff has the bitter stems in it, whereas OSV's is stem-free so no bitter. It's a decent sweetener although it has an herby kick to it on some palates.

reb-A is less bitter than other available steviol glycosides but still you can taste that bitterness. I tried it with thaumatin and although it did reduced the bitterness by around 75% I can still taste it. So my hopes go for reb-D when it will be available for market. Did you play with thaumatin before?

I haven't because I don't have a source for the pure stuff. I have "liquid talin" which is thaumatin in solution -- works great with stevia in tea, haven't tried it in eliquid.

Awesome to know you're working on it. All the new Rebaudiosides/glycosides look interesting -- Reb-D, Reb-M, Reb-X.

shameless hijack.

noticed food i eat containing erythritol or other sugar alcohols leave my vape dull and bleh. science behind this? seems the only remedy is whisky or a tongue scraper.

Interesting, I haven't heard of this response (in foods). Do you take any prescriptions or more illicit narcotics of any kind?

Nope. Been speculating the sweetness of the erythritol has a lingering effect on my tongue, but wanted to see if there was some actual science behind it.

Just get some FA meringue, pretty neutral sweet flavor.
