To anyone hesitating to pull the trigger;

It's so much better than it sounds, and diy sounds pretty damn good. I started on like, Monday, and I'm so happy with it. You can make your juice exactly how you want (I prefer Max VG and nic somewhere between 3 and 6, which I don't find that often), you can make any flavor mix you want (rocking a peach pear blend right now. Good stuff.), and your cotton lasts so much longer. I didn't know what to expect when people told me diy has less sweetener than most commercial juices, but I haven't had to rewick since monday, and my cotton is still pretty damn clean.

It's worth it, man. Go for it.

Awesome! Get a scale, some pipets, and some squeeze bottles (for vg and pg). It only gets better. Mixing with syringes by volume gets old fast.

Soooo fast. I think I mixed about 8 bottles before I gave up and ordered a scale and squeeze bottles. Didn't mix again until they arrived. Pulling VG through a syringe is just miserable.

Yeah, I got sick of it pretty quick. I still mix by volume, but since I mix max vg (my flavorings are the only pg I use) I just bought some plastic squeeze bottles for ketchup and filled them with vg. If only getting my vg based nicotine was that easy though.

I keep mine in 30 ml bottles and take the larger bottle of nic out of the freezer to thaw when I need to refill.

That ketchup bottle thing is incredibly smart, how did I never think of that? Well done

I mixed without squeeze bottles for 2 months. When i finally bought them i made 500mls for fun.

Retarded question: how big of a squeeze bottle can you get? And how big do you suggest?

They are the size of ketchup and mustard bottles that restaurants have

Yup. Bought mine at Walmart. The clear ones that are $0.97. Right next to the ones that are red and yellow for condiments.

I ordered a scale after my first mix session. I didn't enjoy using syringes at all.

My biggest issue with DIY is me. I cannot seem to make a flavor I love. Maybe I am just not good at it but I'll make flavors that make me say "alright, that's pretty good" but I get burnt out on it because it's still not right. Been trying to recreate a chocolate thin mint my local shop sells (their house juice) with no success. It's the perfect balance of chocolate and mint and in my experience it is really hard to find. This is what keeps me from sticking to DIY as my go to for juice.

Have you tried Flavorah's Creme de Menthe? Its pretty much a york in a bottle.

That's part of the beauty though. You can tailor a juice exactly to your own liking. Increase or decrease each flavor, change one brand for another, adjust the PG/VG ratio and nic just the way you like it, add this, remove that. All it takes is time and patience and access to a range of flavors to choose from.

Chocolate and mint are two flavors that I have several versions of from several brands and they are all very different. I'd start by searching forums and ELR for notes on each flavor. I'd focus on a dark chocolate and a cool mint, not spear or peppermint. Grab a couple that sound promising and start really low on the mint and gradually increase until it matches the strength of the chocolate. Once you find a good balance, perhaps round it off with something else, like a cream or vanilla, or something sweet.

If you're impatient it'll be tedious, but if you learn to enjoy the process of inching closer and closer to perfection, learn to enjoy the chase just as much as the catch, you'll wonder why you ever wasted money on finished products.

Thank you! Yeah, I've been working on this recipe since November haha. I just can't seem to get it right. I have a dark chocolate fudge and cool mint and cream that I use to make it rich and minty. I have tried probably 30 variations and it's just not as good as the one I buy off the shelf. I don't need it to be the same, just as enjoyable if that makes sense. I'll keep trying!

6% Cookie, 5% double chocolate, 3% peppermint, 1% sweetener and a drop of menthol. That is just a complete guess but if I tried to make thin mints it's what I would start with. I'm in the same boat as you with a flavor called lemon drizzle but I'm getting closer.

I've had some success with capella's Dutch chocolate mint...it's great for an andes or thin mint type of flavor. Just a thought don't give up!! I was the same way, and even a year later still feel like you do far too often, but that's the beauty of the ever-elusive art form that is DIY.

by fyrman417over 9 years ago

Just find one recipe that you like, and make that. Vape it for a while. Start substituting flavors and see how it reacts. Try different percentages. You get a better understanding of how the flavors work together. Then go back to your chocolate recipe.

I would stop buying it from them for a while, but go in and browse occasionally, maybe bring in a friend who wants to actually purchase something here and there, and eventually strike up small chat about the stuff you make. If they already know you make your own and offhandedly mention that you kind of liked their chocolate thin mint juice, and you've also played around with trying to create our own, they might be willing to share the recipe.

1 points

by evsoulover 9 years ago

Unfortunately they're not the most friendly people. One spot down the road you can walk in for the first time and be greeted like you're good friends with them. At this spot where I get my thin mint flavor, I barely get greeted. But, the juice is so damn good I don't care haha. I just doubt they'd give me any recipe. I also think they probably buy in bulk from someone else.

It's really all about building rapport and developing a network of people you can discuss DIY with. If they turn their nose up, all the more reason for you to keep trying to make a superior product. Even if it's just mixing for you and your friends, it beats buying from them especially if they don't want to discuss it with you. If they do decide to share their "trade secrets", you can always share something amazing with them that you formulated later on. Although, if you share a recipe first, they might be more likely to let you in on their blends.

Edit: In my general experience, if you go in to "talk shop" being clear that you mix your own and don't buy, they might be more likely to share more info than if you went in begging for their recipes.

Who did you go with? I got the liquid barn kit. All the flavors are great so far, even with out steep time.

by n3tspl1tover 9 years ago

I went to wizardlabs and got a ton of the 8ml flavors. I figured I'd get some duds but each one is like 1.75 so it's not a huge deal.

Edit: most of my flavors are TFA, but my peach and pear are INW because I was told they have more complex flavors? Idk if that's true but I love the mix I have.

Haven't tried INW Peach, but INW Pear is fuckin' intense. Mix at very low percentages.

1 points

by n3tspl1tover 9 years ago

Yeah definitely. I was trying to make a match of this peach pear soda at my local grocery, and its a lot more pear, so INW worked great.

Check out www.eliquidrecipes.com -- that will get you started. Mustard milk is a great strawberry/cream that's a simple recipe.

Also get a scale as people suggested. You can find info about which one to get...diyordie has a good tutorial with links on YouTube. Only about $25.

Lastly, buy from bullcityvapor or gremlindiy -- they have basically everything, and even small bottles, all with droppers, so you don't have to use syringes or pipettes or any of that evil shit. You can just mix by weight straight into bottles and shake it to start with. Don't waste another second mixing by volume.

Good luck!

by n3tspl1tover 9 years ago

I started with the Mustard Milk recipe everyone recommends as a first time, but my first recipe was like

6% INW Pear

8% INW Peach

1.5% TFA Smooth

Those are pretty rough guesses because I was dumb and never wrote it down.

by not_rocs_marieover 9 years ago

I would not mix ANYTHING Inawera makes at those high of numbers. I don't use anything of there's higher than like 1.5 or 2% I'd say start at 1% and got from there, a lot of their flavors are very concetranted

I mean my juice is max vg, even the nic. It has kind of a throat hit but personally I really like the blend. It might not be for everyone.

INW Pineapple is a flavor that works well over 5%. It's very usable at 1% as well as 7%.

Cannot agree more. I started by just buying some disparate parts (gallon of VG, a grab bag of flavors someone on /r/ecigclassifieds was selling (and some more from Mt. Baker and somewhere else, I forget, but some TFA and some FA), got some 15 and 30 ml dripper bottles, got some 3ml syringes, some PG (haven't even opened it yet), some nicotine), and away I went! Some flavors worked, some didn't, but it's been awesome, and a huge money saver. If I was less lazy and/or had more time, it'd be even better, honestly, but now I'm to the point I can mix up a few bottles of some of my ADV's while I'm watching stuff on the couch.

I made my first order the other day, it will arrive next week. I was talking to one our more knowledgeable members about making nic free juice. He shared his thoughts but ended it with "make one with nic and one without" ummm...yeah, he's right. I felt silly. Forgetting my options and amount of control before I've even begun. It was also a good reminder that I'm supposed to enjoy this, experiment, learn. I'll have failures and successes but I can't forget to enjoy this as well.

I live in Indonesia where it was super hard to get flavor and pg vg nic etc and i started ordering fron TFA directly and paying huge import taxes and shipping costs and it still worked out cheaper for me than buying juice here.

Fast forward 6-12 months and i have quite a few recipies i am very happy with and consider better than most of the juice i have bought from shop. This could be way higher but i like messing around with tons of different flavors. Also i make it for so cheap i give away bottles to my friends for free as much as they want as long as they give me feedback.

  1. its not that hard

2)its super cheap

  1. its fun and has a great community

  2. mad scientist what?

How much was the initial cost if you don't mind me asking?

6 points

by daddyblackbootsover 9 years ago

I got 1 liter of vg, 1 liter of vg, 120 mls of nicotine, 5 60 ml bottles of flavoring, syringes and pipettes for $70, $20 for shipping so $90 all together. Rough math I figure I have enough for approximately 6 months. I was spending about $90 a month on budget juice and what I'm making is as good or better and I just started 2 weeks ago. This sub has been a huge help, I'm not sure I could have figured it out on my own, or it would have taken a lot more trial and error without it at least.

I don't know what he paid but if you're looking to start out, I'd recommend bull city vapors or wizard labs. Only problem is that bull city doesn't sell nic anymore. Wizard labs nic isn't bad to start with it. I prefer bull city because you can get 10ml flavors and wl sells 8ml in glass vials which I'd annoying imo. I'd start with 5-10 flavors, a small bottle of pg and vg, and get some a small bottle of nic(based on what you plan on mixing, some empty bottles (I prefer glass to start because you can wash them out with hot water and reuse most times unless ur mixing something strong like honeydew), and a couple syringes. That probably would cost you $30 to start really small. Pick some flavors that are known to be good standalone, then your next order you can build upon those standalones. Just search for standalones people like. It'll cost you a tad more than a bottle of "premium" juice at the store. So worth it.

Alright. You've convinced me. I'm in lol.

by ertttover 9 years ago

Good luck! You're going to be happy you did. For the amount I vape a week it would probably cost me about 100 bucks a week at the store. You'll break even quickly depending on how much you vape. Just stick to the basics and one flavor in a recipe at a time

2 points

by n3tspl1tover 9 years ago

I got enough to make roughly 900ml of juice (with a bunch of extra nic + syringes) for like 80 bucks. If I want to make another 900 it'll probably be more like 40-50 since I only need flavor and nic

2 points

by Kamtreover 9 years ago

I bought a 300ml flask and pipette for about 40$. They're kind of optional. I got some free syringes from the walmart pharmacy. Nicotine was 30$ for 30ml 100mg. And i bought a batch of flavors for about 50$ including shipping. Along with the $10 bottle of 500ml gmo free vg. It's a fair initial cost but really I'd spend that much in two or three weeks in juice and the nicotine lasted me 5 months or so. I'm in Canada for reference.

How much did you put down as a start up cost

1 points

by alextheawsmover 9 years ago

I haven't been trying DIY yet because I'm spending only $100 on 800mls of amazing juice that lasts me at least 5 months of heavy chain vaping. The secret? Buy 3 120ml bottles of juice with twice the nicotine level and more PG than you desire. Then, fill seperate bottles with half juice and half VG. VG is like $16 for 48oz on eBay

I've been hesitating for the past few months, and for the last week I've been trying to pull the trigger real hard, to no avail.

I can get most all the supplies I need no problem, have em all lined up on my amazon cart. The biggest problem I'm encountering is the flavours.

To clarify, I'm from Europe, and most American sites I've seen with all the flavours I need don't ship outside America. There are places in my country and other countries in the EU that have the flavours, but not all of them. I can find CAP, TFA and FA pretty easily, but it seems that nowhere supplies FW, INW or pretty much any other flavours than those 3. Also, to clarify, I can order the flavours I need from like 3-5 different sources, but I don't have the money to be throwing away on shipping.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? I'm in Ireland by the way, if that's relevant.
