Placid tribute
submitted over 9 years ago by HocusKrokusMixologist

Before I go in to the recipe for this tribute to Adirondack's popular Placid, I'd like to preface that this IS NOT A CLONE. While I've tried to clone Placid, and feel like I'm quite close to the original in other recipes, this post is more about the profile that Placid can offer as a base to support fruits other than the original. I originally started this tribute, and it's many variations, as a result of a simple flaw in my palette. I'm among those few cursed individuals who simply cannot taste strawberry flavors in vapes. Without further ado, here is the recipe and accompanying notes.

Placid tribute

  • Honeysuckle (TFA) 4%

  • Pear (TFA) 3%

  • Pear (INW) .5%

  • Pear (FA) 1%

  • Fuji (FA) .5%

  • Raspberry (FA) 2%

  • Raspberry (INW) .5%

  • Key Lime (TFA) 2%

  • Lime (INW) 1%

  • Honeydew (TFA) 1 drop per 10ml

Notes

Honeysuckle: TFA Honeysuckle is a unique floral flavor that provides the sweet, refreshing flavor that really supports nearly any fruit. Any lower than 4% and you won't taste it at all, but over 4% and it really gets funky fast.

Pears: TFA Pear is great on it's own, and it's always my go to for starting any pear flavor. I used both FA and INW Pear to provide some more depth to the pear profile. FA I find to be a bit "juicier" while the INW really adds a unique note I'd place somewhere between fresh pears, and the juice from canned pears, making the pear stand out well. FA Fuji does it's job supporting the 3 separate pear flavors and helping to bring them all together.

Raspberry: I went through a number of alternatives to strawberry in the first 10 or so iterations before I landed on Raspberry being my final choice. FA Raspberry is the strongest standalone raspberry, so I chose it for the base. At 3% it began to overpower the pears so I stayed at 2%and augmented it with the rather amazing INW Raspberry to give it some extra tart/sweet notes.

Lime: TFA Key Lime is definitely my favorite lime in my inventory. Again I wanted the lime to be present, but not to walk all over my delicate base. I originally started at 3.5%, and slowly worked it down to 2% while working INW lime in to the mix. To me INW Lime adds a fresh rind and slightly candied lime flavor to the already fantastic Key Lime notes.

TFA Honeydew was my final addition. It's also part of my clones, as I believe this may be the sweet juicy note that's almost unidentifiable in the original Placid. Using any more than 1 drop per 10ml causes the honeydew to stand out way too much, but it's definitely noticeable at this addition. It contributes to overall sweetness and the juicy mouthfeel.

Final notes: It's pretty good as a shake and vape, but it really comes together after 2-3 days. Substitutions -could- be made but I think it would throw off the flavor quite a bit from what I've put together here. Feel free to ask about them though, as I've gone through probably 20 or 30 variations to land here on this mix.

TL:DR - This is not the greatest juice in the world, this is just a ^tribute

You mentioned FA pear in your notes but don't have it in the recipe...

Yes, got a bit confused with the "3 separate pears" and was struggling to find the 3rd!

It's practically a rite of passage for new chefs to pay homage to Placid (myself included). When I bought my first round of concentrates I made sure the ingredients for a few different Placid recipes were included. Hell I'm still tweaking my take on it. It's one of the few juices a lot of DIYers have tried.

As far as yours goes, it looks delicious, I dig the addition of raspberry. I'll try this for sure.

I think this is because it such a good and unique flavor profile. I sell a Placid-like juice. I did increase the Strawberry, though. People want that flavor so I don't see why we shouldn't make similar juices.

It really is. Placid is partly why I started Diy in the first place. It's one that has followed me over the last year of mixing, and will probably still be something I tinker with for a long time to come. Hope you enjoy it!

Great post. Not familiar with Placid, but as a relatively novice/moving onto intermediate mixer, I especially appreciated the in depth flavor descriptions.

I never tried Placid but it gets great reviews , wish there was a great clone out there that people who have tried the original can vouch for .

Maybe yours is it who knows.

I tried Fizzmustard's rendition, it's close enough for me personally.

I add a drop of quince and dragon fruit per 10ml to fizz's recipe and like it more than the real Placid.

Here's a link

I added 1% cactus, by the way. I get all the earthiness and floral lime flavor that I do in Placid. However, I cannot taste strawberry. So your results may very.

There are quite a few that get close. This is definitely not a clone, just something that pays service to the profile behind what I think makes it so great.
