I can understand your problem. First select the third one down in the list of calculators on the side bar. Then find a recipe you want to make. Then purchase just the flavors for that recipe in small bottles. I wouldn't get more then 15ml of each flavor to start with. Put the flavors in the calculator. Choose what type of readout you want and put the recipe in the calculator. Tell the calculator how much PG, VG and Nic you want to use. Tell the calculator what you want the finished amount to be. It will calculate the amount you need for the size of the bottle of juice you are making. There is a manual that explains how to use the calculator I recommend you read it and it will explain all the features. That's all there is to it.

So I just made my first batch yesterday, with more flavors coming in. It's not that hard. I've never worked with syringes before, so that was a little weird to me.

What pushed me to actually try it all was the recipe calculator on the side bar (comprehensive). That makes it super simple to do.

1) Find something you want to mix or try. I suggest finding a couple different recipes so you don't keep going "grr I wish I had that". Also, using the "First time orders" will probably help you.

2) Think about the nicotine level you want. I went with 24Mg/ML because I vape around 1.5-3MG, and was freaked out at the "possibility" of working with high concentrated nicotine.

3) Follow the steps to building a recipe from the calculator.

4) Decide if you are mixing by volume (syringes) or by weight (using a scale, disposable pipettes, and squeeze bottles for VG and PG) If by volume...pick up some 1ML syringes (for flavors), 3ML syringes, and 10ML syringes. Get some 18 ga blunt needle tips.

*I built my first batch with volume, read about doing by weight and have a scale and pipettes coming Friday. Weight has many advocates because using syringes with VG is a pain, and weight should allow you to be more accurate/consistent.

5) Pick up disposable nitrate gloves and goggles for safety (goggles are probably optional, but I wanted to be safe).

6) Watch videos on making juice and read the guides from DIY beginner.
7) Order VG, PG, Desired nicotine, and 30ML bottles + 10 ML bottles, flavors, and equipment to mix
8) Supplies come in, check everything off and make sure you got everything you ordered.
9) Breathe...most of the hard work has been done for us already.
10) Work safely, don't freak out, follow the recipes. Be really, really, really careful with nictoine. Use your gloves and googles, handle it safely. Recap it once used.
11) Enjoy.

Some tips I picked up off various forums, I wish I could give credit to the posters, sorry!

If you have dogs/cats/babies use common sense on where you are putting things.

"To measure with a syringe: draw some liquid into the syringe, and keeping the needle submerged in the liquid, “purge” the syringe by pushing all of it back into the bottle. Now draw out the correct amount. If you did it right you should now have a syringe with no air bubbles in it. With syringes, measure using the bottom of the plunger (they are convex) as the marking point for the graduations on the cylinder.

When you have depressed the syringe all the way, you have dispensed the measured amount, but some still remains in the needle. Do not add this to the liquid you are mixing (unless you don’t care about accuracy). You can carefully put it back in the flavoring container (risking possible contamination) or just flush it with distilled water."

I had the same feeling when i started to mix my own juices, just start with some simple 2 or 3 ingredient recipies and use one of the juice mixing calculators that can be found in The sidebar and you will soon realise its not as Hard as you think :)

The only difference between you and 95% of the people here, is that you havent jumped in and started yet. Let your mad scientist run free, dont be afraid to make mistakes, and experiment! Start now and this time next year you will be sharing recipes with the best of them. Also like /u/rendar1970 posted, ELR has tons of recipes and looks pretty straightforward to use :). I think the fear/nervousness has to do with trying to visualize DIY e-liquid making. Using syringes, scales, etc. is far from many of our individual experiences, let alone doing any of the arithmetic to properly use them.

I can tell you, for a fact, that when I started DIY -- when I made my very first order and sat waiting for the goods to arrive -- I didn't really understand every detail of the process. And I made a lot of mistakes with not just equipment purchases, but with buying crappy flavors, making crappy mixes, etc. But like any hobby, there is a learning curve and part of that learning is actually making mistakes. I think this whole "learn through error" is a very important aspect as it, if you can believe it, will make you much more confident later on. You know for a fact that this flavor doesn't mix will with that other flavor, or you will never purchase 50ml syringes again because you never used any of the 5 that you have currently (true story), and the list goes on.

So, my advice to you is: read-up, try to absorb as much as you can, but if you don't fully understand something, don't sweat it. It will be through actually DOING the mixing where you will learn the most. Just dive-in.

I haven't ordered, yet, but I've been lurking for a while. I felt a little overwhelmed at first, but I just read everything. I read the sidebar like 20 times, I read every thread that gets posted, and all the comments. I'm starting to understand a lot, and if I'm confused about something, I try other sources. Once I get the supplies, I'm sure the hands-on portion will click. Just arm yourself with knowledge and research and take lots of notes. You'll be fine.

I haven't started yet either, like you, Ive been lurking and reading everything I can. This is a great source of info. I must have a hundred threads bookmarked :) Im not scared to start, Im really excited :) But, I understand your fear. Here's what I wanted to say...or ask...do you cook? I know this DIY sounds intimidating. I feel like its similar to starting to cook. My niece wanted to make one of my recipes...so I told her what she needed. She was scared it wouldn't turn out. You need special bowls, patience for caramelizing onions, different cheeses, some grated, some shaved etc. Add a dash of this spice if you want this taste, add a dash of wine to mellow of the garlic....she thought it sounded like too much. But she was amazed at how easy it really was. Just needed the right tools, a good recipe and patience. It only sounds intimidating to get started. Now, is the first go at making a juice going to be perfect, no, but with time and tweaking and learning...it will always get better.

So if this helps, picture yourself preparing a meal. You need to go to the store, get the basics, the meat, the potatoes, the veggies. Now you need to add the sauce, the seasonings etc. And yes, have some pots and pans to cook it all in and some plates to serve it on. Whats the worse thing that happens? You over cook the beans?? Throw em out and put some more on the stove :) I say go for it!! Mistakes while making juice seem to me to be of .little consequence or expense really. Good luck! From someone who has yet to mix a juice and will likely be screaming yuck soon enough :)

It gets easier if you imagine everything in 10ml batches and just do the necessary multiplication afterward. Just get your nic in 100pg so you can add that to your total pg ratio and the rest of the pg you need, then mix with flavors and vg, adding flavors to that pg ratio too. For example, say you wanted a 10ml 70/30 3mg. Measure 0.3ml pure pg nic, add around 15% flavor so 1.5ml flavors in this case. That gives you 1.8ml pg so far, so add 1.2ml pure pg to get 3.0ml which is 30% pg, add 70% or 7.0ml of vg and you're done. 3mg, 10ml at 70/30.

OP I feel your pain. Everytime I stop by a local b&m and drop 14 to 20 bucks for a "premium" 30 ml bottle I think of diy'n my juice. Then I jump on this sub, look up recipes and see tons of different flavorings needed for a juice. Then I get discouraged. I know I need to stop procrastinating and just do it though. Thanks to everyone who shares their knowledge on this sub one day I hope I'm able to share some of my own recipes.

Honestly, DIY juice at a level that's like pretty awesome juice, maybe not absolutely top shelf specialty shit but definitely better than B&M house juice and almost premium, is really easy. Get a few tried and true recipes from the sidebar that interest you, order your supplies and mix it up! If you can follow basic instructions it's pretty darn simple.

Mix by weight or with syringes or whatever, just do it and start learning. Will your first juice be your best? Hell no. Will it be vapeable and maybe actually good? Very likely. The longer you wait to start mixing and learning the farther away you are from amazing cheap juice.

Also don't worry about messing up. I mix stuff I don't like all the time, I'll have a recipe I'm tinkering with, change something and just be like "nah" and pour it out. It's a luxury of DIY that as long as you mix small 10mL batches your mistakes cost almost nothing in the long run.

ELR and DIYorDie were what helped me most when starting. Also, it's said a lot around here, but the sidebar was invaluable.

I started by buying flavors and premixed nicotine at the nic strength and pg/vg ratio I wanted. Makes it super easy to start.

I did research through this subreddit for 2 weeks before even making a question post, and even now I come here to research my questions and/or ask for answers or direction to an answers. I have honestly put in at least 40hours of reading..

The rabit hole only goes as deep as you want it to, that is DIY. You can keep it simple or link into the matrix.

Its like anything else. One step at a time. I have very little background in brewing beer, but if I were to look into brewing within a couple weeks I'd do it in this order:

1. Learn how beer is made. In general, nothing specific, or at least basic beer.
2. Decide what beer I'd like to make, a shandy? Maybe a port? Something vanilla/chocolate/coffee or maybe something lemon based?
3. Look up recipes/process on whatever I decide to make.
4. Order the stuff.
5. Follow a recipe.
6. Figure out what went right, what went wrong. Research more.
7. Do it all over again.

I'm in this hole and feel that way if I start thinking about it. The best thing to do is treat it like a pool or the beach, don't think about it. Just dive right in.

Seriously, a few bottles and syringes(or weight mixing) some VG+PG and some nicotine.

Get a few flavours, you don't need several hundred. I personally really like coffee and cigarettes, but cannot stand vaping them at all. My flavour generally include menthol, fruit, or mints. With taste being so subjective, a small but wide variety of flavours would be good to start with, e.g. If there are flavours you like, get concentrates similar. For the price, a few flavour failures won't be a disaster, and you may end up using them in more complex mixes later anyway.

The vast majority of my mixes are straight up one or two flavours. A lot of the time I'll go with just one. It is intimidating at first, but think of it like cooking. A bit of practice with flavours, some mixes you won't want to repeat will happen. But the reward when you make something you like is fantastic. Even if you try it once you will still most likely be spending far less than you would on stinkies.. :)

I didn't get into this to actually grow a business, but it did happen. You just to jump in. Find recipes you want to try and go buy those flavors. Most of the websites we use sell multiple brands so you don't have to buy from many places. Start with what juices like and find recipes that are close to that profile AND that have gotten good reviews.

If you really want to start you could do it another way that isn't so overwhelming, just buy the VG, PG, nicotine and a concentrate, you may not even need a syringe or scale.

I haven't had a lot of time to mix lately so I go to GremlinDIY and MBV and buy a 5ml bottle of concentrate, put my VG/PG mix on my bottle, pour the concentrate in and shake it. You do not need to make a huge order and but a bunch of equipment. You don't have to start mixing your own recipes right away or even ever if you don't want, if you're in it to only save money that's the best way that I know of.

You will hardly even have to measure anything, doing it this way may ease some of the anxiety. To answer your other question, before I started, I damn near had a panic attack jumping from site to site, comparing recipes, trying to find the cheapest option, finding out the site had everything for the recipes I wanted to mix except the most important ingredient, yeah, I've been in that rabbit hole. Hope this helps you get your feet wet and ultimately get into mixing further.
