I know this essentially a hand check but I haven't dripped much in the last few years and my RDA (patriot clone) just died on me. Just looking for a reasonably priced and good flavor dripper. I didn't want to get into the electronic cigarette bro-vice and since I'm really only getting a new one to test my juices I thought I'd ask this sub.
I don't do fancy coils but I'm willing to try some new stuff if it means flavor.

I love my Sapor RDA. It's simple, easy to build on with large post holes for more complicated builds if you ever want to explore that (and four holes for easy dual coil installation), leak-free with its top airflow design, and is indeed quite flavorful. Would stay away if dual coils aren't your thing though as it does not give you an option for single coil exlusive airflow.
I've been pretty happy with my Tobecco Velocity clones. I really like the deck layout and the simplicity of putting in builds (and re-wicking), plus the airflow can go anywhere from mouth to lung to basically no restriction. Not having to worry about centering the airflow over the coils (the cap is keyed) is a nice bonus.
Boy oh boy do I love the Velocity and that deck! Such a great atty, but there are probably better ones out there for flavor. I only use my Velocity for dripping so I won't be much help here lol

Just get clapton coils premade and use those wickless to flavor test.

Melo 2 eh? After I went from the Melo '1' to the Mutation X V3, I am never satisfied by the Melo's performance. The Melo got me off of stinkies as well. I just purchased the Monkey King RDA, Happy Year of the Fire Monkey, and I really like it so far. Fits well on my mech, low profile, and glass top. The airflow is perf, right under the coils. I have a feeling that is going to happen again. The Patriot clone got me away from a pro tank and ultimately I rocked between the clone and a nautilus for 2 years. The clone was gifted to me and has always been wonky so it was hard to be my on the go to rig. 6 months ago I ended up getting the melo 2 and 60w tc for cheap from a friend who was quitting. Initially I was going to spend this money on a Uwell crown but I think it's better spend on a dripper right now.
I've been really distant from the scene for the last 2 years up until I started slowly DIY juices the last few months. Mostly just been doing single or 2 flavor combos but I just got in some new concentrates based off a few recipes. Going to pickup some premade clapton coils and maybe something like a Velocity , and start learning how to do these newer builds and play with some flavor profiles.
This sub has really inspired me to be back in control and to dial things back in for myself. Just trying to take it one step at a time.

Depending on how the Clapton is built, yes. Claptons have a lot of surface area for juice to cling to AND a lot of ridges and valleys and what-not.
You won't get 8 second draws, but for fast flavor testing it's super easy.

I'll second that, and piggy back for a mini review. Tldr: I love it, get one.
Was using a mutation x v3 for a long time (v1 before that too). Love that thing, it's still my favorite atty. But I just got the doge less than a week ago and have been loving it. I like four post drippers, it comes with a single post you can swap out as well. Large drip tip, it's a nice ceramic one, I haven't noticed it getting hot. No 510 drip tip adapter though. The juice well is huge, biggest I've seen other than the magma.
The best part about it is the airflow imo. There's a slot cut out of the deck (weird description but go watch a review and it'll make sense). What this does is position the airflow underneath the coils instead of from the side like in pretty much every other rda, not counting bottom air flow, to give slightly better flavor. Is it game changing? Nah. But it's unique and I like it. Wide open the air flow is ridiculously airy. Could definitely handle anything you throw at it. I use it halfway open.
Deal breaker might be the design. Neon dog printed on the side might not be for you and I get that. I'm an idiot so I fucking love it.
I absolutely loved the Doge v2 and still use my Doge x2 all the time. is this such a significant upgrade that it would warrant owning one of these as well?
From what I see from the pictures in element vapes it looks like the airflow slot is the same size. But it's differently placed which allows a larger juice well (it's seriously huge). The walls on the deck around the outside are up higher and the airflow is cut out if that. I haven't had any leak problems (other than when I over drip but it would leak in any atty so I don't count it). The tip might be a little smaller? It's still quite large though. Definitely thicker, and ceramic like I said. Biggest difference I guess would be that it's a four post dripper, which you can swap out to make it three. Watch a review on YouTube so you can see what I mean about the airflow.
Is its worth it to get? I think the main improvement is the airflow and how that allows for a deeper juice well and where it is positioned relative to the coil. Although the v2 looks like it's lower as well. So if you liked the one you have you should enjoy this one as well but I wouldn't say it's a necessary purchase. You'll have to see for yourself.
And did you mean mutation x2 the second time?

Get a Royal Hunter. Thing fuckin' rocks for flavor and can be found cheap now. It's pretty simplistic, but I'd argue it has as much or better flavor than my all time favorite (Aeolus v1).

Absolutely loved the royal hunter. That is until i used all the screws it came with, the screws on that thing are abismal, the rda worked beautifully for the first 3 weeks or so then i stripped the screws. At this point i just kinda blame myself and replace them, making sure to be extra gentle on them, but nope, stripped again in about a month or so. I can still get really small gauge wires in there for nickel builds and such, but my preferred 22 gauge kanthal is a no go, the screws can't handle getting tight enough to run large gauges of kanthal for a long time. Seeing as OP has screw problems i personally wouldn't recommend it
Aw damn, that is a major bummer. I haven't had much trouble with my screws, but Idk why people insist on screws other than Philips or flatheads. I don't buy the "they don't back out as easy" it all depends on the quality of the screws as far as that goes for me.
+1 on the Royal Hunter. You can get an authentic one on ebay for less than $25. I also recommend the Attty3 and the Industructible RDA.
Haven't heard of the other 2 you mentioned, but yeah doesn't get much better than the RH for simple well built authentics.
Despite it's reputation for being a cloud chaser, the velocity is awesome IMO once you close off the top air holes and half close or more the cyclops holes.
You can do builds all over the place and there is a deep juice well, and not to mention easy as hell to build on with the grub screws that don't clip wires.

Royal Hunter, Derringer, and Plume Veil - Can't go wrong. Simple, easy, great flavor.
Phenotype L, Twisted Messes, Velocity - Great RDAs, bigger then usual but they're that way because of the build decks. You're meant to use large wire, or complex coils.
After moving to fused claptons, its REALLY difficult to move back to anything else. They're actually easy to make using a swivel. If I don't even feel like wicking or if I'm testing a bunch of different batches I can drip right onto the coil and get a couple drags or a really nice long lung hit.
Might be an old Rda by the rate at which they come out but the Plume Veil is a great overall Rda and the magma is fantastic for flavor with deep wells
I'm pretty much all about high-airflow drippers lately, if you are into that FT has Phenotype clone in mini version (it's called HL mini), has pretty awesome flavor and shitton of airflow. If not, my most flavorful RDA is Hobo 2.1, beats my Magma/Origen v2. Fancy builds can help a lot if you are liking a lot of airflow, basically the only way to get a good flavour at that setting (My HL mini with staged heating 26AWG/26*32 claptons and two airslots open comes really close to the Hobo).
How much spitback are you getting with that build?
I put a dual fused claptons in mine and might as well have just poured hot juice on my tongue haha.
Tbh, it has a lot to do with overdripping and proper wicking, as claptons with imperfect wick tend to boil the juice in the nooks and crannies and that results in spitback. Scottish roll + barely enough juice so it doesn't sit in the well does the trick for me.
I have tried most of all the rda's in this thread and there is always one that continues to outperform. That is my Velocity RDA, amazing clouds and flavour. If your used to screw hole/center post rda's it will be a little difficult to learn at first. There are only 2 posts but they are on the side and have 2 hex screw holes in each. I promise you that building dual coils on this has been a breeze and is very easy to build on.
I got one recently and have been struggling to get good flavor even using clapton coils. Any tips you have found?
