We were approached by a major DIY company to do a giveaway. We also have been asked from time to time to promote sales and other deals.
IMO I don't want this sub to become ECR with endless promo posts, and as long as I'm a mod it won't happen. We are here to learn and perfect the art of DIY, not to score some free stuff. If we open up the floodgates, this sub will die quickly.
That said, I also don't want to deny our subscribers good deals and giveaways (if the reward is substantial).
I'm making four top level posts for your voting. DO NOT ADD OTHER TOP LEVEL POSTS; THEY WILL BE DELETED.
- Yes, allow some sales and contests which have been mod-approved
- Do not allow sales or contests at all
- Use monthly threads for sales & contests
- ALL OTHER comments about the topic
Use your voting arrows to let us mods know what the community wants.
Thanks and happy mixing.
Use monthly threads for sales & contests
We would need a better way to keep monthly threads from being buried. Might I propose we create the monthly threads on the first every month, then link to them in a monthly mega thread that we then sticky. This way the clone request and other monthlies won't get buried.
Definitely the way to go. It's nice having the recipe thread at the top but that the same time it seems to be the only way to keep every thread visible enough without overloading the sidebar (cuz who reads that anyway amirite). And I also think giveaways and sales shouldn't be on the front page so it solves that problem as well as keeping things tidy.
You'd have to lock the thread after creation to keep it from becoming an in-navigable mess of random comments.
I'll jump in for a moment. In a monthly thread situation I personally would use it to post a LINK to /r/gremlinDIY where the actual giveaway or sale is posted. This way I CAN have the original post to draw a random name from without filling a general sales thread. I think most of the vendors have their own subs here, and being able to mention a link in a sales thread would work for us so we CAN do things for the community without spamming. I am in the front row waving banners to NOT turn this sub into a spam fest. I want to see recipes, favorites, problems and ideas. If I want to buy something I would love to have a thread to look at where they all are.
As someone else mentioned, there are so few DIY vendors I don't think it would get too insane as opposed to ECR where there are 10,000 vendors and 100 new ones every day.
A monthly thread is going to end up with 10,000 comments and make it impossible to find the giveaways. It's also going to make it near impossible for the vendor to randomize a winner.
Just FYI, if you have RES, you can use the "Hide all child comments" on the OP to see only the top level. You can also add "?depth=1" to the URL, like this. I know it does not solve the issue you brought up for everyone, but at least it would for you. :D
I'm aware of this feature, although I appreciate you mentioning it since many are not. Aside from changing my settings every time I view a certain thread, the point remains that I would have to sift through a bunch of posts to see if anything new had been added.
While I really don't think we need giveaways, I think maybe having coupon codes (that work) and maybe info when there is a flash sale would be nice.
I have more or less checked out of ECR for the reason the of giveaways and stuff. Almost entirely just hang out in this sub, and the last thing I want is clutter with giveaways. I like the current state of this sub (with a few IMO tweaks of course)
Sales, single monthly post with approval from the mod(s).
~~I think if you do a monthly thread, it would have to be heavily moderated to keep it readable. If you had a way to only allow the top level comments to be mod approved, and keep the vendor posts right on top, and then allow general discussion underneath them, that would be good. Otherwise it'll be nigh impossible to find the one post with a sale in the 1000 random comments that are inevitable.~~
As pointed out to me elsewhere, the sales would be added to the post itself. That I can deal with as long as it's stickied or linked from an easily accessible place. I always lose the monthly threads. I was envisioning a "Post your sale here" thread that was created and left alone, kind of like the monthly clone request threads. That would not be good.
Yes, allow some sales and contests which have been mod-approved
This. I feel as though monthly thread posts would get lost. I also don't wanna see it become ECR...."Bombies, Nana Cream 3 mg. Thanks for the chance!"
This seems like the best option. Forcing the contests to be mod-approved will help limit the vendors to those that will benefit the DIY community (ie. flavour concentrates instead of mods and hardware). Allowing each vendor to have their own thread would greatly assist the vendor in determining a winner.

I voted for yes but, if going with something like a monthly thread, I would prefer to see it weekly. I always forget about monthly threads after they leave the front page.
There are so few DIY vendors on here, I don't think it would end up like ecr.
I'd like to have a stickied thread with links to the other monthly threads, that way you have quick access to all the buried threads, since we can only sticky two posts at a time.
Monthly threads are a PITA and "Mod-Approved" posts are very subjective.
Just set some well defined rules on what is and is not allowed and hit it. Or deny all. Otherwise this sub looks even more like a circle jerk of bro posts and favorites to the powers that be.
I'd love to see more vendor participation, and I'm never one to pass up free/cheap supplies. I'm not 100% sure a monthly thread will be easy to implement giveaways, as I think it would be difficult for vendors to utilize randomizers to select winners.
On the flipside I would hate for mods to get overwhelmed with requests all the time with vendors trying to shoe in on free/cheap advertising here. I'm not sure what the answer is, but I'm not sure having to mod approve each vendor post, or trying to cram them in to one thread are the answer either.
I'm all for some giveaways here and there, but I hope it doesn't eventually end up being a cesspool of a half-dozen giveaways and sales ads every single day. Maybe suggest vendors have fewer sales and larger discounts rather than bi-weekly sales with 10% off.
I think this sub will remain great as long as it doesn't stray too far away from it's original intent.
link in the side bar for a give away thread , link in the side bar for a sale thread. link in the side bar to coupon code thread
some will miss the flash sales ect.. but it would give one place to click out of the way for when someone is actually in need of it.
sale announcements we all have email , might i suggest just having links to newsletter subscriptions with the coupon/ sales posts
or skip the threads all together and just set up/link r/DIY_ejuiceSuppliesSALES/ or something to that effect..
Do not allow sales or contests at all
This is too important to leave up to a democratic vote. There is no reason to start allowing vendors to get (essentially) free advertising on this sub. If they want to advertise they should go through Reddit's regular advertising venues. Not clogging up any part of this sub with their shit.
It's a bit disappointing to see this option downvoted to hell with no other comments. I think what you're proposing would be better suited to a different sub, if there's enough demand to justify it. Whether it needs a new sub, or could just be added to an existing one, I'm not sure.
I think the last thing we need here is this kind of fluff post. Giveaways add nothing to the discussion, and mainly benefit the vendor. They're free advertising. If DIY vendors really want to help DIY as a movement, they should target their giveaways to the bigger subs like /ecr in the hopes of converting more first time DIYers, while still being visible to most of the same people who participate here.
I'm honestly a bit surprised that this is even a question, when considering how many other kinds of posts are heavily moderated for being either redundant or not sufficiently advanced.
I personally feel that we are mostly on this sub to get away from the marketing. We want to vape on our own terms. Of course, we have to buy our gear from somewhere.
I just don't want to read "Gremlin Gremlin Gremlin" five times in as many minutes. Like Mr Moose above me says, the real winner here would be Gremlin, not this sub.
How exactly is this sub not winning? If someone wants to give a random DIYer some free stuff to DIY, I'd say that benefits that person tremendously.
Depending on who wins, they may opt to use free stuff as an opportunity to try new flavours or mixes, which, hopefully, they would share with the community.
I DIY because I'm poor. To see some sales to help me save money could be helpful. Some of our members of this sub posted a deal for a site and I got to get 2 gallons of vg for what I paid for one last time. No don't let this sub get overrun with crap but a nice sale is a nice sale.
One of the things that really annoy me about the ecr subreddit is that every time I try to search for some useful information, I'm met with a wall of old giveaways, discounts and promotional shit. I don't want this sub to turn into that. I'm also Norwegian, so sales, promos and discounts won't help me much.
