Sweetener question
submitted over 9 years ago by HyperactiveAdult

I have been mixing for about 8 months now and I haven't used any kind of sweetener yet. Now I have found a recipe I would really like to try that is calling for it. I ordered a bottle of tfa sweetener straight from tfa. It appears that the crystals are all at the bottom of the bottle. They disperse when I give it a good shake and the cloud up the whole bottle. My question is should I just give it a good shake before adding it to the recipe or do I need to warm it up first and try to dissolve these crystals? I couldn't find anything while searching for this answer. Oh and this community is awesome!

Warm it gently in a water bath -- it'd be great if you had a thermometer to measure but heat up some water on the stove, you want to get to around 120 F and try not to get anywhere near 150 F so you don't risk warping the bottle. Turn the heat off and move the pot off the hotplate. Let the bottle of sweetener sit in that hot water for a few minutes, take it out and shake it. All the crystals should be dissolved back into solution. If you can still see crystals, let it sit in the warm water a little longer and shake a little more, you should be able to get everything to mix in.

Is the bottle forming crystals TPA's sweetener, or cotton candy?

The last bottle I got of TFA's sweetener had a bright sticker on it warning me that the contents might crystallize and need to be re-dissolved.

I guess with the winter they got tired of the phone-calls on the issue :D

I thought most flavors use it by hitting some forums and e-c-r, then when I start to research that's not really used here but also hated along with EM and that's with me picking up a 30ml of EM too. I've been so busy here but I need to check out ECF as I know they have smart people there as this is going to be a LONG learning process.

It will gunk up your coils of course though. Best to use a drip...
