Food Grade VG?
submitted over 9 years ago by Mrfuzzftw

This is probably a noob question but I have not been able to find a clear answer online. I just bought food grade vegetable glycerine as I'm making my own juice for the first time but my friend says I fucked up you can only use USP grade, so is there a problem with food grade and is it safe to inhale? If you are wondering this is the one I bought http://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0019LWU2K/ref=pe_386430_121528420_TE_dp_i2

Any help would be greatly appreciated

For what its worth:

the second you open a bottle of USP grade VG, it is considdered FG. Opening the bottle allows for any type of airborn contaminant (dust, sweat, moisture, grime from your fingertips, whatever).

To be USP, it has to be sold in the same bottle/container it was manufactured in. if you rebottle it, its not USP Anymore.

And - (downvote me all you want for being precise) there is no such thing as USP VG. only USP Glycerin. USP has standards for labeling and names, and putting Vegetable in the name is not part of the USP nomenclature.

Edit : its not part of the Monograph... the USP Monograph.. nomenclature works, but if you want to do your own research, look up the "USP Glycerin monograph"

I didn't downvote but, whilst you are technically correct, starting with USP is the point. You don't want to start with more impurity than necessary.

You are fine, as people have said USP just means its been approved by the non profit, this may or may not be USP grade that was re bottled, but its still FG which is fine. Just don't buy from china.

either way its better than cigarettes so tell your friend to eat a dick

In the future i recommend essentialdepot or bulkapocathary

I dont know how everyone else thinks about it, but i have in the past got a gallon of VG while bidding on ebay for FloridaLabs, which was good and SUPER CHEAP. But only go for bids, because the buy it now price is stupid high, but i got a gallon twice for under $16

Somewhat related question - is there a big difference between FG/USP and medical grade? Because every DIY shop seems to sell USP and I haven't been able to find any medical grade VG in smaller quantities than a gallon.

There's absolutely no need for anything purer than USP (United States Pharmacopeia), which is generally in the 99.7% purity range (and that .3% is just water.) As far as I know, USP is medical grade, at least in the US. Also, the only real "issue" with food-grade VG is that it tends to have a slightly higher water content, but it's certainly not dangerous or anything (but again, I'm going by US manufacturing/testing standards.)

You are looking for the highest purity possible. USP ensures that. Food Grade is likely good enough for personal use but it's not recommended. I think food grade ranges in the 99.5% pure area most of the time (can be more or less) but what you are looking for is 99.7%+ pure.

I've used the VG you linked and I think it mutes flavors. Many of us use http://www.essentialdepot.com buy I couldn't find that they sell anything on amazon.ca and I'm not sure about their shipping prices to Canada.

Your friend is wrong and is dumb for thinking he's right without verifying his claims. Sounds like his ego is just trying to put himself above you/better than you. Such is how a lot of vapers are.

So I've used that VG for 6 months before switching to larger Qty. bottles. It's USP that has been rebottled. It's great VG and has no strange taste or anything. Vapes great and is easy to get.

Vape on and enjoy.
