i suggest you motherfuckers clamp down and get ready for a long winded wall of text, of a true 1st world problem.
So i'll try to summarize as much as possible here.
I've been vaping for 3 years, but truly quick smoking a year ago. Since then i went from vaping "premium - high priced juice" to looking for bargains to save on some cash. Once i had twins 3 years ago, i realized i couldnt be spending 20-24$ for 30ML every 3 days. So i went cheap, and i found cheap and was happy with cheap.

Now that the twins are 3 - i realized i could start getting into DIY since there was more time for me at night. So i went ALL OUT. I've been DIYing for 4-5 weeks.

I looked on ELR, and found the top 10 highest rated juices and bought all the flavors in one shot, with a scale and read every side bar link possible. I have a history in mixing and some chemistry so i picked it up very fast and i was off to the races on day 1.

My problem now is, i've made like 30 different mixes, including about 10 of my own that i'm working on, and i think i've OD'd myself. I can't tell any flavor apart right now, and i'm not talking about vapors tongue. I'm talking about mentally, it all tastes the same, and its all not impressive.

I know that premium juices are loaded with sweetener, and I've even went route to see if that is the tip that i was missing and it wasn't. I just truly think i went too fast/too soon and now every juice just tastes the same when they are vastly different.

My issue is that with so many juices - im trying them in my drippers and I'm constantly switching juices every time i have a vape session, so I'm not really even getting a feel for what the juice tastes like before i move onto the next. I am literally looking at 40 juices in my cabinet right now and nothing even looks appealing to me, i find myself reaching for my aromamizer that is filled with the same juice I've been buying for a year.

Another issue is i think my expectations were too high with DIY, i looked at all these reviews on ELR on the top rated juices and i was under the impression that these batches would blow my brains out with happiness...and it just hasnt been my experience just yet. I havent really tweaked any of the recipes because i'm always moving to the other side of the flavor spectrum with another batch.

I also think another problem with me is - prior to DIY - im an ADV type of guy, i latch onto a juice for 6-12 months and move on, Before i started to DIY i'd buy a liter of the juice and when i'm sick of it, move onto the next huge batch based on reviews. I only had 2-3 juices in my rotation EVER, now i look at 40 and my eyes get foggy.

There is also a mental aspect to this too, a mental attachment really. So for example, if i buy 500ML of publicly sold juice, i made a commitment to that juice, so whether i like it or not, I'm tricking my mind into accepting this juice as something i would vape because i am committed. For example, purchasing 180 ML of muffin man, i don't even know if i liked it - i just know i bought 180ML of it, and i might as well vape it.

now that I'm paying 1$ for 30ml of juice, i feel that my awareness has lifted, and I'm getting pickier inadvertently. So I might actually like the juice i made if i paid 18-24$ for it, but because i didn't, I'm being a diva bitch.

I dont even know if I require a response to this bullshit ranting, it just feels better to let it out. But if anyone has gone through this type of thing, please feel free to reply to this thread and tell me what you did to get through it.

Maybe a solution is to take 1 bottle out, and vape it, 1 fucking bottle at a time. Then when that bottle is done, move onto the next. My compulsiveness makes me want to taste ALL the juice at once when really i have all the time in the world, unless i get hit by a truck tomorrow or something, then you guys can have my flavor stash.

I guess i'm done, i'm not really going anywhere with this. I think i need to stop making more mixes until i vape some. If i find a recipe or have an idea, i dont have to immediately make a batch, i can put it in my notebook and move on.

TLDR - starting DIYing 4 weeks ago, made 40 different mixes, now I'm vaping too much different shit, i cant tell which way is up.
EDIT: thanks all for the amazing responses. I'm going to take it one bottle at a time and I'm also going to vape unflavored for 2-3 days to reset my shit.
Thanks so much !!
You said it yourself, you went too hard too fast.
Find one of those mixes that you really like and latch on to it. You can still make slight tweaks, but theres no reason to try to manage so many mixes at once.
As for the whole vaper's tongue/fatigue thing, get some menthol or don't vape for a day.
Also, take this as a blessing. Keep those bottles shelved until they are well steeped.
Yup. Classic case of blowing your palate out. If you can, and only if you can, try to stop vaping for at least a few days. It'll do absolute wonders, and you'll feel as if you have a super tongue. These flavorings we use are pretty strong concentrates, and when you pound your face with them for too long, olfactory fatigue sets in. Unless someone has found a way around it there's really no way around it besides giving yourself some time to recoup.
reminds me of what you were talking about in one of your videos (Funfetti i think?) where you couldn't find the missing piece in your mix until circumstances forced you to take a break from vaping for awhile and you were able to figure it out immediately after you came back to it.
Spent a week in the hospital a few months back and they would not let me vape (the heathens). Got out and my adv became vape of the month for a little while. Now I'm back into a fatigue state. I've started doing larger batches to steep but I'm running into issues with my scale being too small. Been thinking about just making a bucket and putting it in the garage for a couple months while I experiment with other flavors
To OP and everyone else in this situation : Hang in there. I've been vaping for about 3 years now. Two years ago I took a stab at DIY, half assed one btw, and said screw it. Started working in a vape shop while finishing my degree about a year ago. I have a lot of friends in the industry (shop owners, juice companies, mod manufacturers etc) I started seriously DIYing about 6 months ago. I've helped a few friends with their juice and about 4 months ago watched an acquaintance start a "juice company" he went into it with the mindset of being "cool" and making money, needless to say it sucks and I'm not the only one who thinks so. When I started I went in full speed ahead. Dropped $200 on lab ware and supplies. I went into it with the intentions of saving money bc I started building more complex builds (fused claptons, braided builds etc)and I started killing 30ml a day. I picked 5 clones I loved, 5 top rated on ELR and a few flavors I just knew I'd like. I was burnt out in two weeks. Everything tasted thr same, or like cardboard and cleaners. The clones of flavors I liked were OK at best. I couldn't find anything I really really enjoyed. So the excitement and interest waned. I had one flavor I actually liked, and thanks fizzmustard bc it's what kept the DIY drive alive. Mustard milk became my ADV, I was concentrating on my IT and programming interest and kept just making what I liked. When my focus was somewhere else DIY became more fun. I started toying with my own recipes again. I was more patient and allowed them to age, would make corrections, and repeat. Recently a friend tried my juice I had on me and had me make some for him. A month later I have about 11 people that buy juice from me on a regular basis. I never had any intention of MAKING money doing DIY, just wanted to SAVE some. Whether I take it any further, idk we'll see. I feel I'm rambling now, but essentially I've been there. Burnt out, hated everything I made, frustrated and overwhelemed. My advice is don't overthink it. Find 1 to 3 recipes you like. There's a plethora here and on ELR. Change them to your liking if needed. Then once you have an ADV venture off. Think of something you think would taste good. After mixing for a while you kinda know where certain concentrates work best. I usually have about 4 recipes I'm playing with at any given time. I feel that's enough for variety to where you don't get tired of adjusting the same flavor for weeks on end, yet not too much to where you just say to hell with it and throw your bottles in the garbage (been there) Stay here and ask questions, use the search bar for a flavor, a recipe, or mix that sounds interesting. See what others have experienced, what's worked and what hasn't sorry if this is long, slow day at work and I've had a lot of coffee. Good luck man, hang in there.
TLDR: Pace yourself, go slow, stay simple in the beginning, find something you like and it gets better.
I started DIY in about Nov 2015. I am currently in the same position you are. I am not happy with anything I've mixed, it all taste somewhat the same. Even the juices that have been steeped for 1 month+ taste okay, but not an ADV. I went back to some "premium" juices ive purchased before that I still had and.... still those as well now dont have the same effect on me. HOWEVER. During the holidays, there was a couple days i didnt vape. When i got back, a couple recipes tasted amazing, like It was the best flavor in the world. 1 day later, it went back to tasting just tolerable.... not sure why this happens, and maybe you are right about the mental thing. If you find the answer let me know!
This is the main reason I do not taste every mix I make on the same day. When I'm testing, I'll write up recipes, mix 10 mls and take what I could possibly do with it. There's what I expect it to taste like and what it really tastes like. I adjust it from there once I've tasted it steeped to get it to where I want it to be. You will overload your senses quite fast tasting it all at once... Quite easily, too. The concentrates aren't fully homogenized in your mixes just yet and it's basically like putting drops of flavoring on your cotton, and then vg on top.
Im also pretty new to DIY, and I kinda went the same route as you. Right now, after 3 weeks of DIY I have about 50 different concentrates, 100 10ml bottles, 100 30ml bottles, 50 50ml bottles, 12 120ml bottles, 200 3ml pipettes and 200 .2ml pipettes. Plus I've made about 30 different mixes so far. Needless to say, I'm a bit overwhelmed. So, all I'm doing at this point is just vaping on some on the juice that I bought prior to starting DIY, letting my juices steeping, and giving some of my DIY juice to my friends so they can let me know how they like it. Like you said, you have all the time in the world. I'd imagine most of the vets here didn't develop this hobby in less than a month. Im willing to be they have been at it for years.
You put value into what you invest in. If you spend more money, you will automatically think it's more valuable when that isn't always necessarily the case. I'm the same way, I fell in love with Cuttwood juices for a stint and I spent more money than I ever have on vaping ever during that time. But now that I'm paying less than a nickle a milliliter for DIY I am waaaay more picky. I'm saving money yes, but at what cost really? I often wonder if maybe it's just the mystique that has worn off. I still enjoy it, but I don't go nuts-o over the best tasting most delicious juice anymore.
Well I started DIY juices about 6 weeks ago. Of course I did my research and I am still doing it. I couldn't make any really good juice. Some of them were quite good and I like them but pretty much I feel the same as you do they all are quite dull and a taste difference is very subtle. So the first thing I did was trying to establish how much flavor concentrate do I need. I kept doing single or two flavor juices and got from 2% to like 15% of concentrate to my juice. When I open the 15% juice bottle and smell it. It smells awesome or even I would say too intense. But when I vape it's just meh' well not bad but the flavor isn't enough. So just a few days ago I did another experiment. I made 5 of the same recipe juices just changed the VG/PG's like this: 15/85, 30/70, 50/50, 70/30, 90/10. I was always doing my juices around 70/30 so the first juice I tried was 90/10 PG's side and I was amazed! I could feel the chocolate for the first time! Wow it's such a difference that I would dial back on the concentrate next time I made it. Now today I opened my next batch of PG 15/85 VG and I can feel almost no taste at all. Yesterday I read about thinning the juice with water helps the flavor but I don't expect much so I have a few more juices to go through and find my sweet spot PG/VGwise. Anyways I think the taste depends very heavily on the hardware and coils build you're using I feel like some builds might have more taste in VG heavy juices mine's not. BTW I'm using Aspire Triton 0.3 ohm coil with Eleaf Istick 60w. So my suggestion is to try more PG I did not notice any allergies on myself and about the throat hit.. well it was heavier maybe because the juice is much thinner and it heats up faster. So I would say the vape is hotter. Next I'm trying VG30/70PG. I can't wait for that!! :) Don't give up. I feel like there are ways it's just they are hidden and you have to find what fits for you best. Keep it up and congrats on you twins!
I'm pretty sure that this is where I'm at currently. For the past month, I would bring my dripper to work, throw 6 bottles of juice in my coat pocket, and constantly switch every time I dripped. I would go home, mix something, and be like 'meh...' I got sick this week though and haven't been vaping nearly as much, so I think I'm going to be back to normal soon.
A few things I did that helped when I was going balls out mixing too many flavours at once that seemed to help.
First off, like a few have said, try vaping on unflavoured liquid for a few days, it'll give your senses a break and help you get some of those flavour nuances back.
Second, if taking a break or vaping unflavoured doesn't seem appealing, one of the best things to do in between vaping different mixes is to drink a large glass of ice cold water. The cold will shock your taste buds back into action, while the water will help keep you hydrated. Because I've found that, even if I thought I was drinking enough water during a chain vape session, I really wasn't, and it was why all of my flavours tasted bland.
Finally, and I think this is REALLY undervalued when it comes to olfactory fatigue, is to take care of your sinuses/nose. The nose is actually where you truly pick up on flavour. So something I've found that helps is to just open up a bag of coffee beans and inhale that aroma in for a few minutes. Something about coffee seems to reset the scent palette and I've found that it does wonders for bringing out more intensity in flavours.
TL;DR - take a break or vape unflavoured, keep drinking loads of ice water, and bury your nose in some coffee beans and take in the sweet smell of coffee for a few minutes. Cheers!
If you have only been mixing for 4-5 weeks and have 40 batches already then Im thinking one of two things has happened. 1.You are a prodigy and should pursue a career as a mixologist. 2.You have a few batches that aren’t great. Consider revisiting any earlier batches (your custards should be good about now), and either fix em up or toss them out! A lot of these clone recipes that are available have also ended up inadvertently turning out a few recipes through experimentation that taste nothing like the targeted ejuice and are actually better! Im not trying to be a jerk, just trying to help! I think I have experienced the same flavor burnout that you have at least once a year (sometimes more often) since 2009. The flavors begin to seem dull, and the smell of the different batches of e liquid becomes the same smell, at times almost nauseating! I will sometimes vape unflavored for a while, sometimes a new flavor helps, sometimes switching base flavor for a while helps. Right now the fad is Strawberry, dragon fruit, and custard mixed a thousand different ways, and Im using yogurt, fruits and other non custard bases in an attempt to not light up a cigarette, lol.
DIY mixing for the first time is real similar to using a computer to browse the internet for the first time. The new end-user/mixer will think he/she has exhausted all possibilities after just a few weeks, when in reality the possibilities are endless. There will be new flavor combinations just as there will always be new data on the internet and new songs on the radio. BTW I dumped a lot of batches that didn’t turn out, also have salvaged a few and learned from it. I suggest you pick out a batch and perfect it before you move on to the next one, and I mean perfect it to your taste buds! And try to vape mostly ejuice thats either fruit or has been steeped.
I've generally stuck to one recipe, continually revising it until it tastes the way i want it to or i've given up on it completely.
What is hard now is for me to pay store prices for juice. I bought a 30mL of juice froma B&M today only because it was super good before and I want to try and make my own version of it.
How in the world are you cats making this so cheap... I had been out of town came back to Chicago went into one of my locals and they said we are out of nicotine... da'fuk?!? What the hell happened??? I ran to Sage Vape and they were out of business!!! I found a Vape store still open and stocked up because of the new taxes at almost a $1 a mil so my old bottles were going to be way insane literally $40 something a bottle... again WTF??? My city wants me to buy cigarettes! HELP!!! I havent had a cigarette in 2 years and now this???
Approach a recipe as something that can be improved. Give a batch it's paces before deciding what it needs. Write notes throughout (and Ideas).
I also keep 3 juices in permanent rotation.
- A cereal for Saturday mornings
- A strawberry cream something for my daily tank
- A shocker juice to break up the monotony (orange creamsickle with koolada, though menthol would work better)
Aside from this, everything else is a tester for the rotations.
IN the moment Edit:
I also keep a bottle of Cotto's Revenge: Bourbon Custard for when I go out drinking.
