[Recipe] Beard 32 Clone
submitted over 9 years ago by bigbadblyons

I am a firm believer in the YOURSELF portion of DIY on this subreddit, but for the first time I felt the need to pick your all-knowing brains for assistance on getting this where it needs to be.

Just a little intro... The first juice I ever sampled when buying a mod and tank for the first time was Beard #32. I had a few other bottles to try in front of me, but that first puff had me pushing everything else to the side and this became my ADV for the first 2 months. This juice for me was absolutely amazing - I had no reason to smoke a cigarette again. Flash forward a few years, now I a certified vaper who makes his own juice because paying around $1 per ml is crazy. I will never buy Beard or any other juice again, but I do want to recreate that crazy good flavor.

I searched high and low on the interwebs: this subreddit, ELR, hell I even went to google to see if I could at least find something close to start off with. I found one, but it did sound quite off so I used portions of it and adjusted to what sounded right to me:

Mustache v1

Ingredient|% :---|---: DX Bavarian Cream (TPA)|5 Butter Pecan (FW)|3 Cinnamon Danish Swirl (Cap)|2.5 Brown Sugar (TPA)|2 Joy (FA)|1 Banana Nut Bread (TPA)|0.6

Flavor total: 14.1%

This turned out to be a fairly close mix from what I remember. Again has been around 2 years since I last tried Beard #32. The Cap CDS has a very overwhelming cinnamon taste so I knew I had to bump this down:

Mustache v2

Ingredient|% :---|---: DX Bavarian Cream (TPA)|5 Butter Pecan (FW)|3 Cinnamon Danish Swirl (Cap)|1.5 Brown Sugar (TPA)|2 Joy (FA)|1 Banana Nut Bread (TPA)|0.6

Flavor total: 13.1%

This turned out to be a lot more palatable for me without the overwhelming cinnamon taste. One thing I do recall about Beard #32's taste was that it was very sweet. As my version 2 sits right now, the taste is there, but its not quite as sweet which will be a necessity if I market this as a Beard #32 replacement.

What suggestions would you guys have to make this recipe a little sweeter tasting?

TL;DR - Close to perfecting a non 1:1 Beard #32 clone and need to know how to get it just a tiny bit sweeter.

Thanks dude! I was hoping a few others on here would appreciate the efforts. I know this is a very popular brand/flavor and I had searched high and low for a clone recipe. After a while I decided you know what, I have taken so much from the community at DIY_eJuice that is time I give something back. I am devoted to making this flavor awesome and sharing it with you all.

I am also working on perfecting my Dewberry Cream from KILO clone. My first couple go's at it turned out to be tasty, but not spot on. Its about time I finally finish this one too.

If you ever perfect dewberry cream please let me know. That juice is crack.

I have all the ingredients apart from FW Butter Pecan, can this be subbed? Have you tried FW Cinnamon Roll or Cinnamon Churro at all? Beard 32 is my all time favourite juice. Alas, I am hopeless at DIY.

I would try either of these two for the cinnamon taste. I am working on getting my hands on a different cinnamon because CDS is not doing it for me.

As for the butter pecan, I can't really think of a good substitute. You would have to mix a couple of flavors to create the experience this provides. No idea what though...

This looks good. Add sucralose for sweetness. Try around one% I've been working on a clone of it as well. Sucralose is for sure in there at a pretty high percentage.

Would you mind sharing where you are at with yours? 2 heads are better than 1. Maybe we can tackle this beast together

I'm away from my recipes right now so I can't share where I'm at, will when I get back to them. I'm adding about 1.5% sucralose to get the level of sweetness to me. I don't joy was released before 32 was made.

Beard #32 uses sucralose, if you are going for authenticity and sweetness you should use it as well. Necessary imo.

I'd cut the percentage of joy in half, 1% can get a little funky after a week or two.

FLV Cinnamon Crunch is a nice cinnamon type flavor that you can incorporate in this mix that will enhance the bakery note. 1-2% is all you need.

Good luck with your efforts.

Joy wasn't widely available when #32 released. Sub in AP for it, I suggest 1 drop per 15mL.

Try diluting V2 by 30% and giving it a 2 week steep.

Sometimes sweetness gets masked by excessive sweeteners in your concentrates. Sweetness also can become perceived after homogenization over time, which is why a fresh retail juice gets sweeter the longer it sits on the shelf.

PG/VG of your trial formulae?

I'm surprised this was left out when I copied it over from ELR. This is a 60/40 VG/PG blend.

I will also give your suggestion a shot. Sorry for brushing over that with my first response. It was a solid suggestion and I will certainly give it a try.

Thanks!

Don't dilute and hope for equal flavor, vape the diluted batch to look for perceived sweetness relative to the undiluted batch.

This was the only juice I bought before going into DIY, one bottle. I remember older clones using FW cinnamon churro and cinnamon roll, I really didn't think that recipe was very close at all, I'll pick up these ingredients and try again with you!

Let's do this! Any assistance would be appreciated. I am by no means a mix master, but I am devoted to getting this thing done!

I have made several mixes and this is a 98% match. but I'm waiting on fw bc to try and see if is 100%. tfa might be what is throwing it off. also in every mix I have made the one missing thing is that super sweet powdered sugar taste. I think they r mixing stevia in sweetener not pg... I will post my follow up as soon as my order comes in.

98%!??!

I didn't think it was quite that high, but thanks for the kind words! If you are saying its that close than I am sure with a couple of tweaks I can get it to 100% on your scale...

This was the only clone attempt recipe I found online. Like /u/vapequeen214 mentioned, the banana nut bread doesn't make a whole lot of sense, so I took it down and am contemplating taking it out completely.

This looks pretty solid man, thanks for the contribution! :)

One question though, didn't Joy come out way more recently than #32? I'm pretty sure joy is one of FA'S newer ones.

by bigbadblyonsover 9 years ago

This is definitely the case. Maybe clone isn't the right word, but substitute. I'm looking for something close and Joy to me seemed like it would be able to get me some of the way there.

#32 is a cinnamon funnel, so where does butter pecan and banana nut bread come into play? Im just curious, when I tried it I tasted mainly Ca CDS and Tfa Vanilla bean icecream personally.

Butter pecan added a buttery taste/mouthfeel that I felt was missing and also helped to sweeten it up a little bit. The banana nut bread, I agree doesn't make sense, but it was in the only clone recipe I found. I will look into adding Vanilla bean Ice cream since I have it.

Thanks for the response.

I just started thinking about DIY, and like you Beard #32 got me to kick the smoking habit. But it's just about impossible to find it in anything but 15ml, and expensive. I am going to try your versions and let you know my thoughts!

Edit: Out of curiosity, does your version destroy coils as bad as the original? :-)

by bigbadblyonsover 9 years ago

I didn't put sucralose in mine the first few times I made it, so it doesn't do nearly as much damage. However, if you do want it to taste more like the real deal you are going to have to put some of that in there and it will of course get your coils gunked up

can you change butter pecan with maple pecan and butter?

1 points

by bigbadblyonsover 9 years ago

It would obviously taste a little different, but I can't imagine it would render it not delicious. I would probably go for a maple pecan and slight cream mix vs. the butter. If you have to use butter I would use it at a much lower ratio then the maple pecan you are using.

i was using: maple pecan fw 2%, cream butter CAP 1%

I was mixing In this way and is Fucking Delicious

Ingredient|% :--|:-- Bavarian Cream (TPA)|5 Maple Pecan (FW)|3 Cinnamon Danish Swirl (Cap)|1.5 Brown Sugar (TPA)|2 Joy (FA)|1.2 Banana Nut Bread (TPA)|0.8 Cream Butter (Cap)|1 Sucralose|0.5

Maybe switch out the brown sugar for brown sugar extra? ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Problem with cloning commercial juices is the sweeteners most of them add in. You either have to do the same or just live with it not being as sweet.

by tet5uoover 9 years ago

Brown Sugar and Brown Sugar extra don't exist as different flavors now. It used to be that extra was just double the flavor of the non-extra version, but they removed the lower-strength version and renamed the extra to just Brown Sugar.

by bigbadblyonsover 9 years ago

I am totally fine with this not becoming a 1:1 clone - I am merely looking for this to be a suitable substitute. I will look back into it because to be honest I am not entirely sure if I was using Brown Sugar or Brown Sugar Extra.

There has to be something else I can add, maybe up the percentages or something to make this a little closer. I am not big on adding sweeteners, so I may look at upping the Butter Pecan and the Brown Sugar by 1%.

try using caramel at a low % for more sweetness, also around .5 fuji apple tends to sweeten things up a bit ive found

1 points

by bigbadblyonsover 9 years ago

I have both of these. I will definitely try this and report back.

My initial thought was to add caramel so I will definitely try that now that I've had my thoughts seconded.
