OK new mixers, this is your thread to ask any questions you want of the DIY eJuice community. All posts are allowed, but we still encourage you to use the sidebar and search features before asking any questions.
- Placing your first DIY order and want to make sure you have all you need?
- Not sure about how to mix your first bottle?
- Want to get started but aren't sure how?
- Any other questions? ... then this is the thread for you. FWIW, the answers to the first three questions will eventually be found in the wiki (still in development); link at the top of the page.
Ask away!
I'm starting a fresh with this and have a couple of questions:
-
Mixing. I bought 240ml of 70vg/30pg base with 3mg nicotine and various pre-mixed concentrates (nana cream, teleos crunch, doughnut king and milk&honey from chefs vapour). Doughnut King, for example, has a suggested measurement of 20%. Is it simply a case (for 30ml) of using 6ml of concentrate with 24ml base and scaling accordingly with batch size? I will be measuring in volume as I don't have the tools to measure by weight (and I'm also quite unfamiliar with it).
-
Steeping. I have a crockpot and have read that crockpot steeping is quite popular. Is it safe to use the plastic stick bottles to steep, or would I require a pyrex/glass container for better effect?
-
Misc. I have bought the pre-mixed nicotine base this time, as I wan't to take it slowly (and the price was good, £5 for 120ml). I have read that it is often difficult to get good quality nicotine. Is this something I should concern myself with, and is there something that I can do to tell how good nicotine quality is?
-
Yes, its that simple.
-
Forget heat/speed steeping. A couple minutes in hot water just to thin, then a good shake and leave in a cool dark place for a few days. This gives the best results.

The lower the nic strenghth the slower the oxidation, so no worries.
Welcome!
Awesome, I'm excited! Thanks for the response!
Your welcome! And in the future, if you want to better understand measuring by weight, Sidebar/Diy beginners guide/botboys guide to mixing by weight. The key is having all ingredients in squeeze bottles. And while you can certainly use other ones, I recommend the calculator and scales mentioned in his guide.
Happy mixing!
I'm just getting into DIY and I ordered a kit from my freedom smokes. I accidentally ordered 125ml, 24mg of 25 VG and 75 PG nic. I like max VG and around 1.5 or 3mg nic levels. Am I screwed? SHould I order another bottle of nic? I know the steam engine calculator will help out alot, but will it make mixing a PITA?
at 3mg that would add ~9% pg to your mix, 4.5% at 1.5mg if my math is correct (might not be I'm a bit sleepy). It would still be possible to hit anywhere between 70/30 and 80/20 or maybe a little lower depending on flavor percentages, depends how important max vg is to you.
So, I'm ready to start small batch DIY. I have 60ml of 100mg nicotine on the way. I also have 2 15ml of flavors to make MustArd's simple strawberry cream.
I know I PG and VG - where should I get them from.
Also, what else do I need...and can I get some store recommendations?
Finally, is it really cheaper to DIY?
As for cost per ml, if you install the calculator from the sidebar (3rd one down), and enter the cost of each ingredient, the final cost of each batch is displayed for you. Cool feature.
Store recommendations:Bull City Vapor and Gremlindiy for 99% of flavors and empty bottles, need lots of those hehe. Essential Depot for pg/vg. I use Vape Clarity for nicotine.
Hi, two gentlemen I have known for some time are looking into opening a shop, they want to sell house juice as well and would like me to craft flavors and teach them so this brought me here, I have been looking through this thread for awhile and already learned so much. But I feel this is my opportunity to pick up on a few things ill need in the future. Given i am not very experienced with mixing, i can accomplish decent base flavors and such but i have a few questions.
-
How "clean" do i need to be? I understand clean measuring instruments and such but gloves? clean my area with alcohol or something?
-
How can i tell when my nicotine is oxidated beyond use? Where can i get higher quality nicotine?
-
Does knowing the chemical makeup of flavors make it easier to take something like marshmellow and graham cracker and such to turn it into a s'more or something?
-
Any suggestions on stirring?

Is mixing by weight more accurate in large batches? ive seen some posts on it but nothing strait to the point.
If this doesn't follow etiquette, then by all means delete it but any help would be greatly appreciated!
