First time DIY (The Plan)
submitted over 9 years ago by Langston77

This will be my first time making my own juice and I can't express enough how excited I am. But first off I would like to give a shoutout to by boy Sidebar. You've had my back through this thinking process and I appreciate it. My plan is to start off small and once I become better then try experimenting with different flavor profiles. I plan on starting off my base with 50/50 with 0nic then progressively moving my VG up. I wanna get 6 flavors to essentially make 3 different type of flavors. A berry, sweet fruit and citrus fruit type of juices. I feel like this would be the best option seeing how the steep process wouldn't take as long as say a bake type flavor. But before I start frankenstiening this stuff I wanna make the flavor straight so I get a better idea of the taste. The juice review deffantly helped me out as far as what % the juice is best at, thank you for that one!! I know this will be a trail and error type thing so I'm prepared for that one. Like I said this will be my first time so anyone who thinks I should do something different, what not to do, what I absolutely need to do, ect that would be great!

Tips that aren't always obvious because they're mentioned in the sidebar but my experience tells me they're essential:

  • Don't buy your first flavors based on what sounds good. Pick a couple of recipes and get the flavors they need.

  • Buy a cheap scale and disposable plastic pipettes (for your nic, vg/pg, and any flavors you might buy in larger quantities that don't come in dropper bottles) and forget all about syringes and mixing by volume. Seriously.

  • You will always need more bottles

Must have been a good year.

Sounds like you have a good plan! Curious as to why you feel the need to start with a 50:50 pg/vg mix. Higher vg wont make it inherently more difficult to make and later on you wont feel the need to adjust flavor percentages.

Would you say I should just go for the 30:70 pg/vg?

Everything that /u/workerbee41 said is great advice.

To answer your question, I personally would just start mixing at your desired ratio. When you change the PG/VG ratio, flavoring could need adjusting which will just cause more work for you in the end. A 50PG/50VG ratio isn't necessarily easier or better than 70VG/30PG.

I also mix at 70VG/30PG because it works in most tanks, carries great flavor, and makes clouds for RDAs. It also works with my nicotine which is 100% PG based.

I'd say get your PG and VG separate. It's one more thing you can do yourself. The final mix will always be different depending on the percentage of flavor if you go with a premixed base like 50/50 or even 70/30. If you mix it yourself the final outcome can always be whatever your preference is.

I started on 50/50 and moved to 30/70 quickly and couldn't be happier.

I fought it for well over a year, possibly 2 with being a 50/50 guy. I think I got b-x's juice about 3-4 months ago and it was 60/40 and it wasn't bad at all and now I've bought some 70/30 and will probably be my standard.

I could care less about clouds too, it's just a smoother hit, and I'm not going to impress anybody sitting here alone in my apartment trying to set off the fire alarm. I started like probably most here with cartos then the heavens opened and we got vivi novas & vamos and the standard was pretty much 80PG then and I just had an old school mentality.

But now I need to change and move on with the times once again as I got into the world of RDA's about a week ago and picked up a Sapor, Velocity, Helix, with dual twisted flat claptons and my god does 6mg wreck me, so now I'll probably have to move to 3mg as even RTA's like the Serpent which is only a single coil too but performs like a RDA.

It really seams to be the perfect blend of; not too much throat kill & enough pg to carry the flavor.

Hey brother, thanks for the shout out, I really appreciate that you've taken the time to hear out my advice. I'm also really glad to have been of such help and service to you, Maybe since I could do it for you, I could do it for others! Feel free to direct any other new folk around here my way.

bottles

bottle organization

for when you have 30 or more bottles steeping fits the unicorn bottles well or your typical 10 - 13 ml dropper bottles of concentrates.

also nice for holding the bottles when mixing (i mix by volume still)

i would suggest cap sweet strawberry and tfa strawberry ripe, 4% of each is an nice starting point for strawberry in many recipes. tfa brings the tangy realness cap brings the sweet. imo better than any stand alone strawberry (haven't tried them all yet just enough to be very happy with this)

Thanks, I was thinking ah, I have 5 50ml bottles that I got from fasttech ages ago and picked up 2 30ml's along with a few 120's, maybe 3 10ml. I thought I should be fine but after I do my research and hit myfreedom with their sale I'll pick up a truck full.

Oh, should I pick up a big amber glass bottle to store my nicotine with in the freezer? I know /u/informationalsidebar is probably shedding a tear right now as I really need to spend hours on it, then hit up ECF and read, then off to vapingunderground but I shouldn't have any problems as within those 3 places almost every question you could possibly think of is answered, and I bet about 437 times too.

I'm literally starting today and doing pretty much the opposite of you. I'm going balls to the wall, 100mg nic, 70/30 VG/PG, with a ton of beakers and probably a large ass supply of VG & PG although some places actually sell a PG/VG mix like ecig and that seems to cut a step. I've barely even touched the side bar yet either, but honestly it doesn't seem that hard and just more common sense than anything. Just like baking, with the right ingredients and follow the recipes you should be fine but you'll burn stuff from time to time.

I'm thinking of going straight to a bit more complex clones like black out city and nana and cream, but I'll mix it up and probably do a simple green apple and extreme ice from MBV.

So basically I'm either going to flame out or learn at a more rapid pace than you. The smart money is on the prior but it's not fun doing it your way :-)

try Fizzmustards 'Nana Cream clone. Only 3 flavors needed, and its really good.

Just got to find that LorAnns Banana Cream, I don't have a reliable source for that.

I read that yesterday and instead of going on a wild goose chase finding citric acid I'll pick up some crystals from Amazon. I can't do desserts, custards, or heavy stuff as it makes me sick after a while for some reason so it's nice that I have an option now to tone down the cream if need be.

Citric Acid was removed from the recipe. Some people reported muted flavor after a few weeks when using it. And remember you can vary the % flavor if its too muted or strong.

It's finally here! Lorann's Banana Cream Flavoring without the neon yellow food coloring! ---- $13 bucks though. I've never had the original and I don't know if it's the hip thing to say but everybody rants about how it's so overrated. I'm not big on creams if it's too heavy as I won't be able to finish a tank as it's too much and go back to fruits or menthol but I'll probably end up doing that anyways with all these tanks and rda's sitting around.

The big clone thread is fascinating. I know it's not 1:1 but some throw 2-3 ingredients in there and because of their name they can get away with charging $1 per ml. Then you see some complex stuff in there, but the adventure is starting for me as maybe in a year or two I can nail down flavor profiles to actually make a decent recipe but to do it right you need special talent.

Edit: he tweaked it now - 8% TFA Strawberry 5% LA Banana Cream 1.5% TFA Apricot(OR 1% TFA Kiwi Double) 1% TFA Dragonfruit .4% TFA Quince

Honestly that's probably the best approach when first starting. If you're comfortable handling 100mg nic. I started with 100mg nic, a giant bottle of VG, some distilled water, and about 15 flavorings. I suppose its nice to to skip some of the natural progression from premixed bases and have more control with your measurements. Best of luck to you!

I'll be getting some good protection gloves and I'll be careful. It just makes sense to get 100mg as it'll last longer and easier to work with as you'll just need 6 drops in to make it 6mg. I'm going straight PG/VG too as it's silly to get it premixed as you lose flexibility.

I still have research to do, but now I'm confused with people saying just weigh it which I have that option set in my profile now. Do I need most of these items then? And what's the popular scale that you guys are using?

    2 x Graduated Cylinder - Polypropylene - 10ml
    2 x Beaker Glass 100ml
    1 x 30ml Syringe w/ 5pk of 1" Blunt Nose Needles
    2 x Bellows Pipettes (5 pack) - Small - 7ml Capacity; 2ml Draw
    1 x Tri Pour Beakers - 100ml
    1 x Tri Pour Beakers - 250ml

I have read thru the side bar, the links for hours, its all great information swirled around in there. I just started out myself, a scale will be your best friend in this. Bottles, i am waiting on more bottles because i used up my first dozen so quickly. There is so much to do in this hobby... your going to have a great time. And grab some extra VG. It stays good, and with doing 70/30 your going to need it.
