Compared what I got with my syringes to the scale and they are CRAZY inaccurate. And I wondered by all my juice tasted like crap... Vaping on some Fruity Pebbles right now and in heaven. In case you're wondering (or thinking of getting one yourself), I bought the American Weigh Scales LB-501 Digital Kitchen Scale for $26. Accurate down to the hundredths, has weights to calibrate, and also plug (so no batteries and doesn't power off if you're like me and have trouble following directions). I should have not been cheap and just bought one back in July.
why is it so much more accurate?
Why is a scale, that is accurate down to 0.01g, more accurate than eyeballing a tiny line on a 1ml syringe?
I have no clue.

i have eagle eyes. though i do have a scale that goes down past .01. its like, .00001
.01 is 10milligrams. .001 would be 1 milligram, & that would be a 20 or 30gram capacity scale for $20ish, or a laboratory-quality scale for a few grand.
You're saying you have a scale that can measure down to 10 NANOgrams? Beyond micrograms? How much did that run you? A billion in unmarked bills? Can you even use it without it weighing air?
With syringes, you need to be extremely careful, an extra .5mm of plunger can mean a difference of 1-2% of flavor. People with exceptional syringe skills and experience interpreting a meniscus (the curvature that forms from the surface tension at the top of the liquid) and properly compensating for the needle fill volume can be very precise, but most of us aren't that good.
With a scale, there is a digital readout that just tells you exactly what's what.
He is playing up the scale purchase of course , most people do it actually , his mistake was saying that since he bought the scale his juices are so much better and his juices before the scale sucked .
If that was really true he would clearly be the most inaccurate measurer on the planet .
People who buy scales ALWAYS play up how much better it is , it may be easier but nobody believes all of a sudden your juices are so much better , thats complete BS . That would mean one thing and one thing only , you cannot measure accurately.
If you're off by 1-2% and using INW or FA then yeah, changing to a scale can make a huge difference in the quality of your mix.
I think your confusing 1-2% of the total volume with the amount being measured. I agree that 1% of a 100ml batch can completely change the taste.
On the other hand, 1% of a 0.5ml measurement is 0.005ml and most people are off by double that, regardless of the method used.
i'm actually a she, and no, I'm really not. I've been making this fruity pebbles recipe since July and it has NEVER tasted as good. I don't sell this scale so there is absolutely no reason to lie about my juices tasting better, sir.
so many things can affect your measurement. air, angle...and I was using these extenders on mine. I feel like an idiot not realizing that was adding extra on to my measurements. Didn't click until I started weighing. I'd been off by 1-2 ml and wondering why my bottles were overflowing after mixing a batch smh.
It is the scale most DIYers get. The manufacturers of the 501 must feel like they won the lottery. Great scale, too.
I feel the same way, I finally just ordered one because of the pricepoint, and because my friend wanted his mini scale back so he could weigh some stuff. Turns out to have a lot of bang for the buck, happy with the purchase,
Can someone please explain how the syringes can be inaccurate?
A lot of depends on the quality of the syringes you're using, can also depend on the person using them. Any syringe is going to have a certain degree of error, usually around 10% of the graduation; primarily because it ultimately depends on the human eye to determine the volume contained within.
So, if you have a tiny 1ml syringe, it's going to be more accurate than a larger 10ml syringe, but even then, the volume you're dispensing still probably has a variance of at least +/- 0.05ml.
There can be a bit of a catch-22 involved as well, because the larger the volume of juice you're making, the less significant a small variance of the ingredients will make...but in order to make larger volumes, you probably have to use larger syringes with a higher degree of inaccuracy.
switching from measuring by volume to measuring by weight will always give you a slightly different recipes, but will be mega consistent from that point on. That's because the specific gravities aren't always 1mg/ml for the flavors, and unless you measure them yourself.... its hard to get accurate specific-gravity numbers. When you do the switch from volume to weight, you'll probably notice a slight 'permanent' change in the recipe. The specific gravities are within.... 4% of 1:1 usually, which is similar to the accuracy you'll get with measuring by volume. Difference here though is that its a permanent ~4% change, instead of just varying 4% one way or the other with volume mixing. But you'll have pinpoint accuracy after that.
When i made the change, i did what I could to find specific-gravities for my flavors, but some i just had to fill in with 1's, deal with it, and move on.
EDIT: and never change your specific-gravities after you've started mixing with them, even if you find a more accurate one later, you should keep mixing with the SG you initially used as thats whats your recipe is based on.
EDIT2: I think i responded to the wrong thread.... fuck it.
Makes it so much fun again. Starting with syringes makes you appreciate how much easier it is using the scale eh?
yep. It became a chore to mix with all the clean up and all. just ordered more flavors & pipettes. I'm excited all over again.
Something I found useful is the fact that BCV and Gremlin_DIY repackage their flavors in 30ml dripper bottles. If you order a flavor at least once from them you can bypass the requirement for pipettes for that particular flavor.
If it is a flavor you use frequently you can refill the bottle from a larger, non-dripper based bottle.
I was going to buy this scale, but shipping alone costed like 100 dollars to Norway. Where did you buy from?
I'm currently waiting for a pocket scale. It does have up to 1 min auto off feature, which is not to bad, since I can just tap the scale, and it won't turn off.
I got the scale crazy cheap.Think it was 10 dollars.
Yes, I notice that I don't trust syringes. When using the 1 ml syringe, and I want 0,1 ml, it feels like only 2 drops or something. Things just doesn't get accurate it small amounts with syringes.
World of difference between syringes and scales. Especially the clean up. Sucks to have to rinse, clean, dry... and waiting for all of this to happen would discourage me from mixing. It's pretty amazing how sensitive those scales can be. Just leaning on the table (desk) can affect it.
