So I've been trying to get a decent rose based flavor and finally got something I'm happy to share. Googled around and found that Nectarines and Roses are in the same family and have been used in some recipes before but not too many looked interesting. Tried different variations but the rose never quite blended in. It wasn't until I walked into a macaron shop in Larchmont Village that it hit me. A macaron! This place called 'Lette had a Rose based Macaron that was insanely good so that sort of formed the basis for this recipe.
Ingredient|% :---|---: Almond (FA)|1 Apricot (FA)|1 Biscuit (INAWERA)|0.5 Cookie (FA)|0.5 Lemon Sicily|0.5 Lime Tahity Cold Pressed (FA)|0.25 Mandarin (FA)|0.25 Marzipan (FA)|3 Marzipan (INAWERA)|1 Meringue (FA)|0.5 Nectarine (TPA)|4 Rose Candy (TPA)|3
Flavor total: 15.5%
TFA Rose Candy - I tried FA Rose but found it closer to a fresh rose water flavor and too light compared to TFA Rose Candy which has more of a syrupy sweet flavor. At first Rose Candy seemed to dominate anything I added it to it's floral, perfumey, and very sweet. I struggled adding it in low %s to things but no matter what it was always sticking out like a sore thumb. The solution however actually turned out to be pitting it against strong nectarine, marzipan, and bakery flavors. Even at 3% the Rose is more of a background note for this recipe. It's not an obvious rose but blends together with the nectarine and marzipan to form a new kind of flavor almost. But still might be too much or too little for some so 3% is a suggested starting point.
Bakery Elements INW Biscuit, FA Cookie, FA Meringue form the 'baked' dessert base of this recipe. This is a pretty tried and true combo. Used at pretty low amounts to just give a hint since Macarons are pretty lightly baked.
Marzipans I chose to use a combination of INW Marzipan and FA Marzipan for this recipe. It just seemed to work better as a combo than either one on it's own. FA Marzipan is darker and tastes more baked while INW is a bit sharper and aromatic. FA Almond rests somewhere between a marzipan and a realistic jordan almond without much 'toasted flavor' so it's also helping fill in some of the gaps here.
Citruses & Apricot added mainly as tart element to pull flavors apart but Apricot also rounds out the Nectarine nicely.
As always, open to your suggestions and comments.
You have been contributing a lot lately and I just wanted to say thank you :) That IS a lot of flavors and I don't have a few of them, but the moment I do, I'm sure to be mixing it up. I really like your in depth analyses of the flavors people don't tend to use often.
Thanks! Just trying to do what I can to maybe steer some people off into some unchartered waters and push the envelope beyond the monotony of strawberries and cream (not that there's anything wrong with simple effective recipes). But the endless possibilities are really what dragged me into DIY in the first place.
Yo dude I have the new bombest Strawberries and Creme recipe. MF Strawberry 2% - VZ Strawberries 1% - FLV Cream 1.5% - FA Meringue 1.5% - FA Fresh Cream 1% - Hangsen Osmanthus 4%. Nothing can be subbed but it'll make your man parts work better.
Sorry. In all seriousness though, I also appreciate you sharing this.
This recipe looks awesome but unfortunately i only have 3 of the flavors. I think my version of heaven is just a room filled with bottomless bottles of all the flavor lines...
Yeah I kinda realized that after posting. Extra credit is cool and all but can be hard to replicate.
What I think are essential flavors:
- TFA Rose Candy
- TFA Nectarine (only one I tried, if there are others they could be subbed possibly but can't guarantee it'll be good)
- FA Meringue
- At least one of those marzipans probably would go with FA before INW since its forming the bulk of the marzipan flavor here.
- Maybe could switch up the bakery stack I have for something else like Sugar Cookie or any combo of light % bakery notes maybe even a little vanilla custard.
- Citrus stack could potentially get swapped for any number of light citrus elements.
Would love to see variations on this actually if people could use whatever they have and report back. This is just what worked for me but I think could be easily adapted by following those general guidelines.
Oh c'mon! Two different Marzipans?! That's out of bounds dude.
I bet this mix is flavorful though!
lol one would probably have worked well enough tbh but they're both damn good and I couldn't make a decision so in the bucket they went
interesting use of the rose candy as well as marzipan. Always wanted to use marzipan but never had the chance (lol)
I will try this recipe out! thank you :) and when I make it Ill add notes as well, what I like and dislike about it, and tell you what I think about it :D
Also Marzipan is an incredibly versatile flavor. At lower percentages it can add sweetness and depth. But bring it up a bit and it's got that classic Rainbow Cookie flavor. I grew up in NY where those are kind of a classic staple at Italian deli's. Not really experienced with chocolates. But a classic NY Rainbow Cookie eJuice sounds amazing and might have to be my next recipe.
Description from wikipedia: almond-based sponge cake, apricot and/or raspberry jam, and a chocolate coating.
Wow this recipe looks amazing. How do you control the nectarine? Seems like a lot.
Pretty sure the marzipans/biscuit/cookie/almond & then the Rose does it
Ehh, i could see how they might temper it somewhat but that stuff was always very powerful to my taste. I'll have to mix this and see for myself.
I haven't tried it yet. I need to restock fa lime/lemon/marzipan & pick up inw marzipan, the nectarine, & rose candy. Will be subbing INW Apricot at .5% cause that shits seriously potent. Have FA rose, but he's already tried it.
Funny thing is i've been very casually working on a rose macaron(& soon a lavender variation), never thought of pairing the nectarine/apricot with it.
it's pretty upfront but goes toe to toe with the marzipan and rose kinda all blending into each other and kinda canceling/balancing out (to me at least). definitely a very flavorful shake and vape recipe so that element might get significantly stronger if left to steep haven't really tested that yet. I can see it being a bit much for some people. It is not subtle.
This looks wonderful! I really enjoy nectarine as well, but I'm finding that TFA really dies off after about a week or so. I have a nectarine ice cream I'm working on, but can't seem to mitigate the flavor loss after 5 - 7 days. I've added a small amount of Apricot to balance, but it only helps so much. Have you experienced this with TFA?
Alright! Made this recipe and don't have INW Marzipan, but everything else went in NIlly Willy. I bumped up FA Marzipan to 4% to compensate. Then I gave it a warm water bath and shook it to death.
I did 70/30 vg/pg, and 1.5mg vg nic with dual 26g 10wrap 2.5mm coils at .6ohms, doing about 50w
It is a very interesting flavour. I mainly taste Rose Candy, as kind of expected, but the marzipan is carrying it quite well, most likely all the citrus backing it up as well. I notice that it almost has more bakery notes in it, but thats only after I get punched in the face with floral notes.
I will report in a week when this has steeped a little.
Nice! Thanks for the notes! It's definitely a little out there. I'm thinking the Rose will probably chill out a bit with some time and repeat exposure (I'm sort of used to the flavor after so many test batches) but honestly can't say. TFA Nectarine is almost floral as well so could be tasting some of those sharper nectarine notes. I was actually a bit worried people would try this out and say they can't really taste the Rose.
you're welcome! And its not really out there :P Sure its not a familiar flavour like strawberries and cream but I prefer different flavours and new takes on stuff, like banana cinnamon caramel cream, instead of just... banana cream, or new ways to work with apple.
I like it :) I am having issues letting it steep bahaha
