How To & Tips for [ELR] E-Liquid-recipes dot com
submitted almost 10 years ago by Python4funProud Sidebar Reader!

I wanted to share some tips and tricks that I've found while using ELR, particularly as it pertains to the questions that echo around here daily (and are now against the rules) ** So to start things off here are the rules:**

  1. Read the sidebar before posting.
  2. Use the search function before posting.
  3. No "hand-checks", "DIY Vape mail", "review my order" or "what can I make with these flavors" posts - period.
  4. "Clone Requests" must go in the monthly thread or will be deleted.
  5. Commercial posts are not allowed without moderator approval - Vendors please post to /r/ecig_vendors
  6. Recipes belong in the monthly thread, UNLESS they offer SIGNIFICANT development notes or other info that helps mixers up their game.
  7. No offers to buy or sell juice.
  8. Read the sidebar. Again.

Rules 1, 2, 4, 6, & 8 are pretty standard reddiquette and fully support my sentiment here.

ELR

"review my order" or "what can I make with these flavors" posts

There is a great trick to using ELR all you need to do is follow these steps:

  1. Create an account
  2. Add all of your flavors to your flavor stash
  3. Use the handy "What can I make?" button

** That's great but what if I don't know what to order**

  1. Go to the flavor list
  2. Search for a type of flavor like 'strawberry'
  3. Click on the 'Recipes' column header (this sorts the flavors by what has the most recipes)

BAM - now you have found the most popular flavorings for the flavor that you want. There may be literally 1000 flavors listed for strawberry, but only 6 of them have more than a thousand recipes. While the other strawberry flavors may wind up as your favorite, the ones with more recipes are going to be more useful to you as a new mixer. More people have experience with using them, and more recipes are available for you to get information on your own.

I really want to use [insert flavor name] but I don't know how

  1. Search the flavor list to find the flavor that you like
  2. click on the flavor

Now you will find LOTS of information on how people use this ingredient the first (right under the star rating) looks like this (I'm using Sweet Strawberry CAP)

Percentages in recipes

  • Average mixing quantity: 5.8% (Median: 5%)
  • Minimum used quantity: 0.1%
  • Maximum used quantity: 66%

Single flavor recommendations: 28

  • Average quantity: 10.6% (Median: 10.0%)
  • Minimum used quantity: 4.0%
  • Maximum used quantity: 20.0%

Now my recommendation would be to start between the average and median % for what you are trying to do, either mix or single flavor. So I would go with 10% for single flavor or 5.5% in a mix. After you test this amount, I would suggest tinkering as your tastebuds suggest.

There are also links below the % info for "BUY HERE", "NOTES", "RATINGS", and "RECIPES"

I really like [insert flavor name] but want ideas for new recipes

Use the "SEARCH BY FLAVOR STASH" and check the boxes next to the flavors that you want to have in your juice. ( I ALSO SUGGEST CLICKING THE BOX BESIDE "HIDE SINGLE FLAVOR RECIPES")

You also may want to attempt to sort by rating after you select your flavor, but I wouldn't take a single rating (or less) to be very meaningful. If a recipe has 5 or more ratings then it is definitely worth trying. Most people don't rate recipes on ELR and that is slightly annoying, but if we start rating things (ALL OF US) we CAN change that.

I don't know what I where to start

  1. Go to ELR
  2. Hide single flavor recipes
  3. Click Rating header

or click here

While ratings are usually pretty meaningless on ELR, you can be sure of one thing, if something has a lot of votes, then it is usually worth a try. The first 5 pages listed from following these steps led me to 5 pages that each have 5 or more ratings per recipe.

Edit : headings Edit 2: links Edit 3: There is an option in preferences to 'Use grams' instead of drops on the recipes. I highly suggest this as mixing by weight is a tremendous improvement over all the syringes to use and clean when mixing by volume.

Awesome post. I just wanted to chime in that while chukr.xyz doesn't get a ton of love, it has a really neat inspiration feature where you can find recipes using tags, or have it come up with recipes based on existing recipes you like.

I've switched over to using chukr mainly because it already has the SG for most popular flavorings.

That's great. I'll check it out, thanks!

And there is a substitution helper at the bottom of the page for a flavor along with ratios for how to tweak the substitute. That's really awesome.

Edit: here is a bit about it

Holy shit, I didn't know about the substitution helper. Just another reason more people should use chukr.xyz I friggen love the site. I've even stopped using a software calculator.

Wow, awesome, thank you! I've been using the site for a while to lookup flavours and recipes, but I had no idea how much more useful it got when you make an account and put in your stuff.

Question - what does everyone do when they can't find their exact flavour? For example, Inawera Vanilla and Melon, FA Banana, and CAP Coconut, do not appear to be in their database. There is a generic "coconut" I can use, but it's unlikely my results are going to be the same as anyone using lord knows what brand of coconut in their recipes. I'd much rather create a new flavour or submit a request for them to add the right one, even if I'm the only one using it for now. I don't see anywhere to do that though.

Edit - yeah, never mind, I just had to search a little harder, they're all in there

I haven't had that issue before. I will try to look into it later.

You add a new flavor simply by adding it to a recipe - if you want it in your stash as well, you need to add it though on "My flavor stash" :)

Yeah, I was trying to populate my stash, and was doing a search by putting in say, "chocolate" and then scrolling through the entire list and assuming "Inawera - Chocolate" didn't exist in the database because it wasn't coming up in that list. I later tried typing in "Inawera Chocolate" and there it was! So the moral of the story is, the stash flavour search does not display all results when there are too many, and does not tell you anything like "Too many results, please put in a more specific search term" when it's overflowing like that :-)

Thank you for this post. I recently discovered ELR and found myself wanting a few features, so I emailed the dev and soon received an email stating that they were already planning to add in these features and really appreciated the feedback. I suggest that anyone who uses this site frequently, email the dev with any features you would like to see!

When did you contact them? I've been wanting to see a little upgrading on ELR.

That's awesome :)

The rating on recipes is actually pretty useful. I haven't gotten around to implement the same rating system for flavorings yet, but that will be done as well.

There's a pretty good guide on Wikivapia as well: http://www.wikivapia.org/index.php/E-liquid-recipes.com

The only issue that I have with the ratings is that so many recipes have very few (if any ratings). The issue is not implementation, but use.

Very true, it would be great if we could get more people to rate recipes. I do have a plan for that though, but it's in the future... :)

Keep up the good work. There is a question on here about adding flavors. I'm mobile right now and don't see it.

haha the mods here are FAR from that.

the community is much stricter than the mods...which is why the mods can be so relaxed lol
