I made a Unicorn milk clone and don't really taste the flavor. i notice it sometimes and it's really good, but the taste is so week. After few puffs it tastes burnt.
I have made a lot of E-juices and failed every time. This time I followed a recipe for the first time, but the flavor is just so weak.
I'm starting to think that it's my Subtank mini and the build that is the problem.
I have the V2 of Subtank mini. Make my own coils. Kanthal A1, 28 Gauge, 3 mm wide I use a coil tool, so first time I wrap my coils around, i don't count it, then I take 7 wraps. This reads 1.8 ohm just as I want it.
I use Koh gen do Cotton. I'm sure that I don't use to much cotton, since I cut it really short.
So I'm not sure if it's the wicking.
I know that I once made a E-juice with Strawberry (standalone) without nicotine, and used it in my "iJust 2" The flavor was great, even when I didn't go with a recipe.
On the Subtank I simply cannot taste any flavors. I doubt that is the E-juice. At least I should taste something.
Should I buy another tank? Do I use to high ohm? I use 12 mg nicotine in my E-juices. Some say it is way to strong, but this is the reason why I make my coils 1.8 ohm. I have also replaced the drip tip to a more narrow one, for mouth to lung hits.
Things is just getting really frustrating. I follow a recipe but still can't taste anything.
I haven't steeped it. I made it 2 days ago, but some people prefer to actually vape it straight away, so there should be noticeable flavor even though I haven't steeped it.
I don't consider to buy a RDA even though you will get better flavors with it. Subtank should produce good flavor (According to RIP trippers) but I simply cannot taste anything.
I think I will try make the same Juice with less nicotine and try it on my "iJust 2" Maybe that will work.
But things just don't make any sense. Why I can't taste anything. I can taste it slightly sometimes. but I just can't enjoy vaping like this.
EDIT: Muted flavor is the word I'm looking for
I get killer flavour out of my subtank mini. In fact the flavour beats my Mutation V4 hands down.
24 gauge kanthol, 3mm, 5 turns, no spacing, 0.7 ohm, japanese cotton, 20 to 25 watts depending on the juice.
I have found the wicking is critical (especially since I have the V1). Took me a while to perfect the build but with the method I use now I never get a dry hit and never get flooding either even when I pull 4 or 5 second hits.
My gut feel is you're drying out the coil. I can make a quick video of my build when I get home later if you're interested.
Other potential problems:
- Too much nicotine or bad nicotine - try making a 0mg juice to compare
- Too much flavoring overloading your sense of taste - try halving the percentages and compare
- Too little PG to carry the flavour (VG sucks as a flavour carrier and max VG isn't everything)
- Dead flavouring - the compounds in flavourings are volatile meaning they evaporate quickly if you leave the cap off
Hope you get it sorted - the SubTank is an awesome device. Happy vaping.
Edit: Steeping really is important. Especially with creams etc. However you should get SOME flavour.
>I doubt that is the E-juice.
Pretty sure you just answered the questions you posted.
>Subtank should produce good flavor (According to RIP trippers)
Never trust a paid spokesperson.
Yeah, I don't really trust everything he says, but the Subtank should be capable of pulling out some flavor. I'm changing some thing, and I'm testing it now.
I will use 3 mg nicotine and not 12 mg. Even though I probably will struggle with 3 mg nicotine.
I will also change from 1.8 to 0.5 ohm. The reason I went with so high ohm in the first beginning is because I loved the Nautilus mini and it uses 1.6 ohm - 1.8 ohm. Also lower ohm would be really harsh for me when I used 12 mg nicotine in the Subtank, so if I lower the nicotine strength I can lower the ohm.
lastly I will vape on around 25 Watt and not 10-15 Watts that I usually vape on. The reason is because anything higher would be to strong for me. Might be the nicotine. Not sure.
I guess higher the power the better flavor? As long you don't get burned hits? I notice some better flavor when I bumped up the watt, but I was still using the 12 mg nicotine. Will change that now.
This might be solution. The problem was probably to high ohm and to low power. Reason for using that is simple. I use high nicotine so low ohm would be harsh and so would high power.
If I can somehow force my self to use 3 mg nicotine for a week, I think I will be ok.
You make your own juice, so make it like 5mg. It should be almost the same amount of nic from 12mg in 1.2ohm. The more power, the stronger your nicotine comes out. You might want to try like 30-35 watts with the .5ohm.
There are a lot of factors that contribute to the flavor, one of them being proper airflow, and the other being heat. The hotter your coils burn, the more juice will be vaporized in each hit. The more vapor, the more exposure your olfactory senses get to the vapor. The more exposure, the stronger the scent(flavor). It's the difference between a nibble from a strawberry, and just putting the whole thing in your mouth.
IMO the subtank has the worst flavor of all the tanks available.
Definitely a different world with .5 ohm, start around 17Watts and work up to 25 maybe 30. 3mg should be plenty (source: I vape 12mg in clearos and 3mg in sub-ohm setups)
I don't understand the point in using 12 mg in clearos and 3 mg in Sub-Ohm. I get that Sub Ohm does have more power, so you cannot go that high in nicotine with a Sub ohm without burning your throat.
But it doesn't change the fact on how much nicotine you body needs.
I smoke a pack a day. Each cigarette is 0.8 mg so that is 16 mg a pack. But you don't observe it all. Maybe around 90%. So I would need 16 mg * 0.90 = 14,4 mg nicotine a day.
So i usually use 5 ml E-juice a day with a Subtank mini. But you don't observe the nicotine as much as a normal cigarette. A more modern tank will observe 40-60% of the nicotine.
So let's say I use 3 mg as most people use when Sub ohming. 3 mg *5 ml = 15 mg. But you observe around 40%. So it's 15 mg * 0.40 = 6 mg.
So there's is a big difference. i get 6 mg nicotine from a Sub ohm with this setup but I'm used to get 14,4 mg.
mg also known as mg/ml when it comes to nicotine. It doesn't matter if you use a Sub ohm or a clearo. A sub ohm won't like produce nicotine for you. There is two things to consider when vaping nicotine. How much you vape (ml) and how much your tank observes the nicotine.
I think it's pretty false information about the clearos and Sub-ohm. I do understand why you use less in a Sub-ohm. It's because you chug more juice from it. But the difference should not be that high. Maybe I'm overthinking it, but that is the proper way to check what nicotine strength you need.
So according to your setup using 12 mg in clearo and 3 mg in Sub ohm, you chug 4 times more E-juice with a Subohm to get the same result? Inhaling nicotine is all about how much Juice you vape. It's a reason why it's called "mg/ml"
yes, this two tanks probably don't observe nicotine equal, but should the difference be that big? Not trying to sound weird, but help me understand : )
But hey, who am I to tell what's wrong and write. I can't even get a decent flavor from my tank. I'm just saying that it really doesn't make any sense to use 12 mg nicotine in a clearo and 3 mg in a sub ohm. There are just no reasonable explanation for it, since it doesn't matter if it's a sub ohm or a clearo. The more correct answer is: The tank that chugs less vapor should have a E-juice with higher nicotine. But I doubt that your Sub ohm chuggs 4 times more E-juice from your clearo. Or maybe that could be true.
I'm vaping on the subtank mini V1 and it tastes great with my "Poor man's Unicorn Milk" (strawberry 8%, vanilla custard 3%, graham cracker 2%, nic 6mg/ml, 50/50 vg pg). I did drill juice flow holes in the sides to make it look like the V2 for extra juice flow. With this I vape on 30 watts with no burnt taste even when chain vaping. Also using the provided 0.5 ohm coil. Don't know if it's the ohm or the juice flow that makes the difference from yours, just wanted to say that my similar tank provides great taste. So hang in there, you will solve this. =)
I made the exact same recipe you just made and i can taste it , it's very good . It's got to be your subtank or wicking imo.
The recipe was Cuttwood's leaked recipe for the Unicorn right?
Correct, I used that recipe. But i did make some changes. I went with 70% VG and not 75% VG. I also used 12 mg nicotine and not 3 mg.
I also purchased one wrong flavor. The recipe says I should use "Vanilla Bean Ice Cream (CAP)" but I bought "Vanilla whipped cream" so I replace the whipped cream with Bean Ice. But this is probably not the issue, when I can't even taste the flavor. If I would hand to you my tank, I don't think you would have guest what flavor it is.
This has even been a problem before. One time I used 100% Blueberry flavor and people could not guess what it was. They say, Vanilla, strawberry and all kind flavors. I guess it's because I don't use enough power, and maybe the ohm is to high. So I will change that, but would also need to lower the nic so I don't burn my throat. (has happened a few times)
Now I will use the exact same recipe again but with the same PG/VG ratio and nic level. I still would have to use Whipped cream and not Bean Ice.
Also I have to use 7.5% strawberry and not 8.5% as the recipe says. I'm really low on the strawberry and I just made another order for it.
A coil at 1.8 ohm will definitely not hurt the flavor , i actually get better flavor with higher ohm builds and i have tried everything numerous times .
I used 9% sweet strawberry and imo i think the strawberry should even be a little higher than that , a little weak at 8.5 imo .
As others have said if your going with 70 VG you need to up those percentages of flavors because VG is a poor flavor carrier .
I'm having the same issue with my DIY juices having muted flavors on my subtank. Have you found a solution yet?
Just used the same recipe but with 3 mg nicotine. I didn't change the ohm since I'm just so bad to make coils. For the life I couldn't place a .5 ohm coil so I'm still using a 1.8 coil. No, I haven't found the solution yet. it is better with 3 mg nicotine though. I can also vape on 25W without any problems with the 3 mg nicotine.
It is better now, but not close to what I expect. The flavor also get more muted after 5 puffs.
I will consider to buy some 26 Gauge Kanthal to make my .5 ohms.
I only have 28 Gauge so to make 0.5 ohm I would have to make 3 wraps. Not sure if that is good or not, so I be on the safe side and buy 26 Gauge and make 5 wraps to get the .5 ohm
I use 26g gauge and I build anywhere from .3-1.5 and I like the flavor on my mutation so much better. I mix between lung and mouth to lung, I have noticed that a harder/"faster" inhale releases the flavor more, but like you said, it not what I expected. It's still kinda muted. I'm still relatively new to vaping so I have yet to find my ideal setup with coils and wicks and everything but hopefully it's just a problem like that where once I find the sweet spot the flavor will come
Yeah, I'm about to buy 26 Gauge Kanthal and make a .5 ohm coil.
I'm not sure if it's good to make .5 Ohm with 28 Gauge since that would only require 3 wraps on a 2 mm screwdriver. 3 wraps seems pretty low, but if that setup is approved to be good, I could try to make it now. I did try it earlier today but failed hard.
I'm to big of a noob to place a so small coil to the RBA coil.
A little update. I have a temporary solution. I have no idea if this is common sense in the vape world but lung inhaling brings out the flavor. I'm used to mouth to lung hits because I'm a smoker but lung inhaling brings out the flavor for some reason. This is probably also why I could taste the flavor in my "iJust 2" so good since I only lung inhale on it.
Although I get a bit harsh taste when lung inhaling. Might be the nicotine. Not that bad. When lowering the watt it's better.
This was maybe common sense for someone. Lung inhale for better flavor.
Try that, if you enjoy it, stick with it. I can get used to it.
I DL (direct lung, or lung inhale) on my sub-ohm setups, and I still MTL (mouth-to-lung) on my clearos.
I found a temporary fix for this. I can taste the flavor great when lung hitting. The reason I haven't done that in the past is because I have used to high nicotine to lung hit on the Subtank mini. I dropped down to 3 mg and I'm still on 1.8 ohm. I lung hit and the flavor is great. I do get some harsh taste. Not that bad, but it's there. Not sure if that is the nicotine or a bad build by me. I did not used to much wick. Maybe a lower ohm will be better.
Is it common sense to lung hit? Since I haven't read that anyone have suggested that. Maybe it's a silly thing to get reminded of, but I did use strong nicotine before and couldn't lung hit.
I remember a while back when I was vaping on my "iJust 2" and the flavor was great, even with Strawberry (Standalone)
I guess this is because I only lung inhaled with it.
So my question is: How do I get rid of the harsh taste? Is it the nicotine? Or that I use 1.8 ohm?
Dude, just try a .5ohm coil. What do you have to lose except a few minutes of time building and wicking the coil.
I did try to make several. I'm just not good enough to make such a small coil.
I remembered that i have coils that came with the Kanger. Tried that. Still have a weird taste.
Well i can tell you with certainty that 1.8 ohm WILL NOT hurt the flavor , many experienced vapors including Phil Busardo believe that higher ohm coils actually give you better flavor so it's not that .
Up your flavoring percentages to suit your mostly VG mix and i think that recipe can benefit from upping the strawberry because even my 50/50 mix the strawberry seems a little weak .
I'm not sure that everyone that is trying to help will get this message, but there are just to many of you to reply. I found out what the problem was.
I did do some tests.
Test 1: PG 100%
Test 2: VG 100%
Test 3: PG 30/70 VG Nicotine 3mg
Test 4: PG 30/VG Capella Sweet strawberry 10%
So test 1 didn't have that weird after taste. I don't cough but I do get some flavor. I first thought it was because some flavor could be left behind in the tank. But after I tried 100% VG there was no flavor. I went back to the PG and the flavor is back.
This could be because I have used a syringe that was used to add flavors and then used it in the PG. Pretty stupid of me.
Test 2. Flawless. No taste, No aftertaste, and no coughing.
Test 3: This is where I found out the "weird" taste that I couldn't describe. It turns out that it's the nicotine. This is my second nicotine bottle that has been poor. The first one was from "thealchemistscupboard" and my second and current bottle is from "Pink-mule". I store my nicotine in a cold dark room. I have also transferred it to smaller bottles (30ml) and mixed it pretty good before mixing e-liquid and transferred it to smaller bottles.
Test 4: Didn't bother doing it. Don't have the time right now anyways. Will probably do soon, but the important thing is that the "weird" taste is solved.
I still have a muted flavor when mouth to lung hit vs lung hit. This probably makes sense, but it's so muted when mouth to lung hit that I simply don't enjoy it. I'm better of lung hit.
Just a quick update, since this post is a bit outdated. I do get a killer flavor now, since I started with direct lung hit.
It still lacks of flavor hen doing MTL. I do not know why. I know direct lung hit will ALWAYS give you a better flavor, but MTL is pretty much so muted, that you couldn't tell what it tastes like.
I use the smallest air holes, a narrow drip tip when MTL, but it't not working. Could be that the Subtank mini is pretty bad when it comes to MTL: Not sure why it is like that.
I'm actually waiting for a RBA deck for my Nautilus mini, a tank I really liked when it comes to MTL. So I will try the same juice on that tank.
Nautilus is the only tank I have that is designed for MTL, and I got sick of buying new coils, so I cannot test it before I get the RBA deck
