Harsh Throat Hit
submitted almost 10 years ago by PalefaceVaper

I'm new to the DIY game, been mixing for about two weeks or so now. I did a lot of reading on nicotine brands before jumping in. I noticed with just about all the "main" companies people use, there's some good reviews and bad reviews. I ended up settling with NudeNic. I got 100mg VG nicotine; also got my base VG and PG from them.

I heard a lot about "peppery" tastes\smells from bad Nic, so when I got it I gave it the smell test and it smelled just fine. I shook the bottle up, transferred 50ml to a plastic dropper bottle (I mix by weight), and placed the rest in it's original bottle with tape around the cap, paper towel wrapped around the bottle, sealed in a zip lock bag, and put it in the fridge.

The 50ml dropper bottle is what I've been using to make my mixes with. It's stored at room temperature and inside of a box in a drawer next to my flavors.

I've made 10+ bottles of juice, experimenting around trying to come up with some good mixes. I would shake the 50ml bottle of Nic before using it to try and insure I have no "hot spots". I mix all my juice at 6mg Nic, using the 1.235ml weight calculations for the nicotine.

After letting some of the bottles steep for about a week, I started testing them. I'm getting a really strong throat hit of it. I always subohm drip, and it feels like I'm vaping 12-18mg Nic content from the throat hit in getting. I mostly mix max VG or at the most 80/20 VG/PG.

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong here, but my juices have way to much throat hit.

Well according to some tests done, nude nicotine's actual nic levels vary from the actual info printed on the bottles.

let me see if i can find the tests.

OK, I surrender. I've heard a few dozen references to this 'low homogenization' incident, but I've never seen a link to it. Share, please. :)

Kinda funny they advertise and promote their analysis testing of eLiquids, their qualifications, and showcase their amazing equipment with all kinda fancy ISO qualifications; yet they can’t even f*#king get right the correct milligram percentage of nicotine in the most basic product their known for selling. But maybe it was just me and my nic magically spoiled in two weeks time.

Or maybe I’m wrong and it’s just aliens, 911 conspiracies, and basic mathematics with the use of eJuice calculators that a monkey could use…. Who knows; maybe I’m an alien, or a monkey. It all makes sense know……… I need a banana.

Don't jump the gun just yet. I hear that they have improved. Get a nic test kit and check out your batch

I hear you.... I’m pissed either way; my fault or theirs. Little venting in the post above. But I double & triple check my math. I’m the guy that was arguing with someone about how they could assume all PG flavoring should be mathed out at 1 gram per ml and was searching flavor makers sites for the exact specific gravity for each and every flavor I had (that didn’t end well, so I went with what botboy and everyone else’s math for weight was). And my Nic batch from Nude is two weeks old or so. Not sure how I could have over oxidized it or jacked it up that quick.

But I am new; but I’ve been lurking for a while before jumping in. we'll see. I just need a good test kit. Looking for advice in that area.

For a serious answer, go grab a nicotine test kit, it's either HCL or H2SO4, distilled water and nicotine, real easy to do, wizardlabs sells a kit and nude sells a kit, test your nic and get back to us.

Definitely. I'll be ordering one this week. I'll let you guys know my findings. I knew I should have got one of those damn kits when I made my last order that just arrived in the mail. Getting killed lately with shipping cost since not everyone has exactly what I need all the time.... That, and forgetting something. Like sweetener (although I hate super sweet juice and what it does to your coils), or a test kit.

If you have a nicotine test kit, test the batch that NN sent you. Not your finished mixes, but the plain nic itself. See if it tests close to what you ordered.

No test kit yet, didn't thing I needed one since I put faith in the place I got the nic from.... but it's definitely looking like something I need to invest in. Who's got the best\easiest kit out there I can buy?

I picked mine up from Wizard Labs, but you may be able to find them from other vendors as well.

Have you tried you recipes without nicotine? Still harsh? Yes? Then your nicotine sucks or you mixed wrong. Try another vendor such as Vapertek, Vape Clarity, Liquid Barn USA, or Carolina Xtract.

this is what i'm doing in the next few days.... making the recipes again, but not using anything from Nude. Not their Nic, not their VG, not their PG. I'm gonna use the RTS Vapes VG\PG i got, and no Nic and see how it comes out.

If the nic-free is still harsh, it is probably one of the flavors you are using.

Can you please show us a recipe (or a few) that you are getting throat hit from. If not, what vendors are you using?

100% VG nic also degrades faster than PG based btw although it really shouldn't be bad yet

I got all my flavorings from Bull City Vapor. My base VG, PG, and VG Nicotine come from NudeNic. I also got some base VG & PG from RTS, but haven’t used that yet.

Here are the recipes I made (all made with NudeNic bases, and Nic). All had way to much throat hit for 6mg nicotine content.

Unicorn Milk (supposed leak) Made it at max VG = 83.5/16.5 VG/PG Steeped 10 days

1.5% Butter Cream (CAP) 0.5% Graham Cracker (CAP) 0.5% New York Cheesecake (CAP) 1.5% Sweet Cream (CAP) 8.5% Sweet Strawberry (CAP) 1% Vanilla Bean Ice Cream (CAP) 3% Vanilla Custard (CAP)

Random Sugar Bear’ish Thing Made it at 70/30 VG/PG Steeped 9 days

4% Vanilla Custard v1 (CAP) 1.5% Graham Cracker (CAP) 1.5% Sweat Cream (CAP)

Dragon Fruit Tatsu Made it at MAX VG. 88/12 VG/PG Steeped 6 days

6.5% Dragon fruit (TFA) 1.5% Sweet Strawberry (CAP) 2% Sweet Cream (CAP) 0.5% Vanilla Custard v1 (CAP) 1.5% Juicy Peach (TFA)

Alright well I've made similar enough recipes without experiencing throat hit (and I'm pretty sensitive to it.) One thing I will say is that I ordered some 100% VG nic from nude back in December and the throat hit on it was pretty intense compared to other vendors (pg based though.) Try making one of the recipes without the nicotine and compare

I use nude nicotine as well and I've basically just decided that I have to take into account some variation in the strength of the nicotine. It's usually stronger than anticipated. I will now mix 3 or 4 mg if I'm looking for 6 and so forth. I've gone down in nic fast this way too. Just expect it to be stronger than you think and work with it

Or maybe buy nic from someone who sells you the strength on the label?
