Thinking about pulling the trigger on the heartland vapes DIY kit, but I'm stuck on what flavors to choose.
I want to try all the popular recipes I see floating around on here (Bronuts, Mustard Milk, etc) and I just can't cross reference what flavors I need with what I can choose from.

Start simple and buy everything separate. Order from a couple different vendors like bullcityvapor, nudenicotine etc. With places like that you can order flavors as small as $1.50-ish and a small bottle of nicotine. This way you can order a TON of flavors and experiment before you spend more money on larger bottles.
As far as what flavors it would HIGHLY depend on your palette and what you like. Pretty much most fruit flavors are hard to screw up unless you go crazy with the amounts. I started off with the typical watermelon, strawberry, peach, and menthol. After I got a couple basic mixes I liked I started purchasing ceral flavors and soda flavors etc.
Needless to say 2 years into mixing my own (~4000ml) later I have finally "perfected" about 10 good flavors and 4-5 'basic' flavors. The DIY threads are EXTREMELY good starting points. It's more about figuring out what you like - and sometimes a clone that's dead one you won't like.
If I had anything to throw down to a person getting started. I would suggest getting flavors in a dropper bottle, get a cheap scale, and learn to mix by weight. Will save you money on pipettes and syringes/needles and you won't have anything to clean up really when you're done. (Also a lot quicker to make up your juices).
Mixing is awesome if I would have purchased what I've made it would have cost me at least $1200 - and I did it for less than $300. You purchases and flavor stash will expand - no need to rush it out the gate. Welcome to the rabbit hole. ;-)
First, I'd recommend purchasing what you need separately. For only 10 bucks more, I got enough for 1200ml of juice for my first order!
Also, this will really help. It's a list of "my first order" flavors that was found in the side bar.
Personally, I found 2 recipes that sounded good and ordered the juice I wanted that way. I'll be adding on more to expand the possibilities soon, but it's nice to have a fool proof way to not hate the flavors you get.
I would try something popular like the Unicorn Milk clone that has a lot of commonly used flavors in it. You could then subtract something out of the mix if you don't like the smell or taste.
You can see if flavors are in the list by pressing ALT+F on the website to search the list.
Butter Cream (CAP) Graham Cracker (CAP) New York Cheesecake (CAP) Sweet Cream (CAP) Sweet Strawberry (CAP) Vanilla Bean Ice Cream (CAP) Vanilla Custard v1 (CAP)
Maybe start simple. If you like fruit pick a fruit that you like. Use the search function to see what brand people recommend and add it if it's on the list. Definitely would grab some Bavarian Cream. What general flavor profiles are you going for?
I've been making my own juice for about 2 months now. I highly suggest getting a scale. It has made this experience super easy. Bronuts has become my ADV and its a very simple recipe to follow. You can get 15 ml bottles of all the flavorings for it for 12 bucks here http://gremlindiy.com/bronuts-by-enyawreklaw/ DIY is definitely worth getting into. You'll be surprised at how good your very own inexpensive juices can taste. Good luck!
Mix by weight or GTFO.
Seriously though, spend a day working up a list of recipes you think you'd like to try, prioritize them and order the flavors required. There are certain flavors like Bavarian Creme that you'll see across a lot of recipes, order a 30ml of those overlapping flavors at least. I like different melon flavors so I went heavy on those along with a few other fruits, mint, and finally 2 tobaccos and related flavorings.
And yeah, I decided against all those DIY kits, bought a scale that goes to .00 grams, pipettes (for nic and vialed flavorings) and bottles. No need for syringes or graduated cylinders. Very easy to mix and to clean up. Wish I had picked up more bottles.
